Hey TWTD, hope you’ve all been keeping well.
I’m looking for advice/to hear positive stories from those who have relocated to another part of the country/world, and how you’ve found it?
I don’t mean the specific place, but leaving your friends, family etc.
As some of you may know, I’ve had a really tough last few years and have found myself now with a new job, and a wonderful partner who I’ve known a long time, and we finally got together at the start of the year.
I’m determined to make the most of this life, and we are looking to relocate to Scotland at the end of the year.
I’ve lived my whole life in Ipswich, but want to experience new things whilst I’m young enough (38), and would like to start a family.
The only reason I’ve stayed here as long as I have is my friendship group, which has gradually become less and less active in recent years due to life/children etc. I know the friendships between two of my closest friends will change, and I’m ok with that as I’ll be getting a new lease of life with my partner: but I think I’ll still struggle when those friendships change, as they were my lifeline for so many years.
I’m excited, nervous, scared but am going to embrace the wonderful opportunity I’ve been lucky enough to find myself in.

My wife would up and leave tomorrow if she had it her way.
For me my main interest in life is ITFC, so moving away would mean I'd have a huge ITFC shaped hole in my life.

With cheap flights, trains and the internet the only reason friendships really go to the wall is through choice. I found after my divorce 13 years ago that most of my friends were no longer, but I kept some and gained a few more. I’m quite happy having a very small circle of people I mix with it makes life so much easier. Good luck with the move, the only thing I would say is if you can try and keep some sort of social life that doesn’t always include your new partner as that can put huge pressure on a relationship. | | | |

It's always a little daunting but exciting, I lived in Oz for 3 years in my twenties, which was easy to make friends then when everyone was partying, then moved to SW London for a few years, which was fun at the time but London became less fun and more expensive, relocated back here and started a family.
I'd move elsewhere tomorrow, the only thing keeping me here is my Kids schooling, but once they finish, me and my wife will look to move away, Brexit has shafted some of our ideas, which is a shame as we both WFH so could easily make the transition.
But my advice is go for it, life's too short. |  |

I relocated from Harlow to Manchester 23 years ago. I knew no-one up here, and had to build a new life and network. It was scary at the time, but as other people have said, using hobbies and clubs to build friendship networks is definitely worth considering. I joined a fantastic Squash/Tennis club, and most people I know now can be, byt some way or other, linked to that club or work.
In terms of moving to Scotland, be very aware, as others have said about what you are moving to. I've just come back from a week in the East Neuk of Fife, and whilst it was lovely, it was virtually deserted, many towns had barely any hospitality ( and this was peak holiday season for Scotland). These places could be very lonely if you're trying to build a new group of friends. Obviously, if you're going to a big city, will be different, but its worth being aware.
Good luck, whatever you do, but as others have said, do your research, and also get involved in anything you can. Its really important to say yes to many things when you are finding your feet, even if it may not be perfectly what you fancy, you never know who or what you might find! | |

Done it 3 times
1996 to Manchester
2000 to Colombia
2002 to London (but only because of being ripped by my "employer" in Colombia)
When in Manchester I had a mate who'd moved to Sheffield, do Town away days from Stoke North were a blast!
Worked for a large company do socialised with colleagues, but had a wife & baby at home, hence commencement of the hibernation years
Colombia was interesting but had colleagues & joined the British Business Gentleman's Club, so instant social group. Found many of the expat community to be a bit racist, especially towards the indigenous population,
Had it not been for being ripped off, would have stayed there. New wife & young baby plus mum having triple heart attack saw a return to London (to within a street of my father's "family home")
London work & family compensated for lack of friendship group that I'd last enjoyed before moving to Manchester.
I believe myself to be self reliant & resilient, so just need money for the basics and access to TWTD. Now I have a wide network of, mainly, London based Town fans & usually have someone available for a pint if/when necessary
If you have got the better of MH issues relocation could be a good re-set especially if it suits your leisure pursuits.

I recall a similar thread on here a few years back just at the same time that my wife and I were considering a 3-year move to Bermuda. There was one piece of advice on that thread that I remember clearly and really resonated with me (and turned out to be very true). It was that a new country can give you a change of scenery, new opportunities and, perhaps, some breathing space. But it cannot, by itself, fix what is fundamentally wrong in your life. You take yourself with you, your patterns, fears, habits and unresolved problems. A fresh start can help, but only if it is accompanied by real change, because wherever you go, you are still you.
We still moved, and I don't regret it, but it didn't work out. Coming home after 12 months and trying to explain that to people, again and again, who have barely ever left the town they were born in that a paradise island isn't paradise was tough.

Go for it, look forwards, not backwards and make the most of the opportunity
Like you have said, friendship groups get more distant as people get tied up with partners, family. You can still see them as its not that far and handy thing is, it will me a trip out of it, weekend away, week away etc so will be more special. I think out of my really close friends i only see them 2-3 time a year.
Scotland is also a beautiful but cheap place to live, house prices are so much more affordable, they have a great housing system where offer to completion is a matter of weeks not months, the same free healthcare but more importantly if you looking to start a family is free education even at later stages.
I think in a few years when my son has left school that will probably be where i head up to, or Poland where the wife is from although she doesnt like that idea much so probably Scotland where her cousins moved a few years back and now has a property and a partner that has moved up with him that brough a property also. Fantastic houses for 130 grand 25 mins from Edinburgh.

I'll be moving to London in a couple of months with my partner, and we'll save up for another 6 months or so, before looking to move to Scotland at the start of next year.
I now just need to figure out what to do with my house in Ipswich...
It also means giving up my season ticket which I've held for 20 years which has been a bit bittersweet, but it gives me all the more reason to hang about on here.

Depending on your situation/location, choices are; Air B&B it, rent out, convert into HMO (rent out) or sell
Seen so many families that Air B&B houses out and live off the money and move to some far away luxury beach location! | | | |

Renting out *is* a nightmare now - the stress, time & cost of rogue tenant removal means that most individual owners like myself have removed their property from the rental market; and the annexe to my house is therefore standing sadly empty (albeit a carer probably incoming to use it in a few months time, which was the long term plan when I bought the whole). | |

selling is easier, stamp duty for a second property is a nightmare and so many complications and needless worry when you rent a property out also that it will always be in the back of you mind. Unless you have so much money that don't care about it then it will always be a burden. 2nd property council tax is also extremely high if vacant. | | | |

I had anew, Scottish will drawn up last month and chatting with my solicitor about maybe getting another the property the scenario of renting my current one out was so cumbersome that I cannot recommend that course of action. |  |

I was born in Colchester and lived in Brentwood for many years but just over twenty years ago I moved to the west of Ireland and loved it apart from the weather, seven years ago we moved to the Algarve and it's very nice but we go back to Ireland as much as we can, have you thought about Ireland?, we go to Waterford as the weather is better in the east and the Irish people are so nice it's easy to make friends.

I moved around a bit. Brought up in Cambridge, went to Switzerland age 18 for the summer, Salford (Uni) 19-23, but with a year split Switzerland & France. Then, Manchester, Bury St Edmunds, Huntingdon, Isle of Man (2 years), Guernsey (7 years), Esher, Ipswich (3 years), central London (10 years), Ipswich since 2014.
I made friends fairly easily, via work, hobbies (CAMRA, football, music), and - thx to FB - am in touch with people from many of those places, incl the very first, now over 45 years ago!
I would always say "go for it". Just bear in mind that everywhere is different, not necessarily better or worse, and be prepared to adapt your interests to the locality. You might be surprised by how many friends and family choose to come visit - in the Isle of Man, we had people over most summer weekends; in Guernsey, people came over much of the year, including, randomly, one ex-work colleague, who I have now been married to for over 25 years!!!!!

On a related subject, when you move up north, it is worth renting for 6-12 months so you can get to know the area before committing to buy. I've done that several times amongst my various moves, and always ended up buying a place that was far better for me than if I'd jumped straight into the market. | | | |
