| Maeda - Close on 15:40 - Jul 21 with 2258 views | burnbudgiesburn | Still trying to work out what his position would be. A Chaplin like left sided 10 isn't he? We aren't going to see his SPL goal record replicated in the Prem, but an international for an initial £8m is decent business. Probably claw much of that back through new Japanese fan revenue ;) Guess it helps with the potential signing of Morita as well. | | | |

We all (rightly) wanted athletes and guys who could compete physically. Maeda is an elite athlete. Not only is he absolutely rapid, he is rapid all game. Whether he is a starter or a rotational option, we need players like this in the squad.

Big tick from me. He’s excellent addition

He tends to favour a robust defensive unit which Diop will add to, with absolute gas and energy on the counter and in wide areas. Fatawu & Maeda certainly bring pace, Leif & McAteer aren't short of it either. I'm not sure if Emersonn is quick. Big question marks in the CM as it stands, I think we'll see 2 more come in there to challenge Matusiwa.

Agree on CM - will be interesting to see if Taylor survives as a depth squad option. Personally think he's continued to show signs of progress but quite a way from being a Prem starter. He does have the physicality for it though.

Someone who can time their runs into the box (without straying offside) and is willing to do so could be very useful for maximising our benefit freom what opportunities we get to score.

He's been superb really, especially last season. Had he not stepped up the way he did there's a good chance we wouldn't have got over the line IMO. That said there are levels and I don't see him as a regular in the Premier League tbh, and there's no shame in that. It was a glaring weakness last time out at this level, albeit not on Taylor, and one we need to get right this time. I think we're slowly adding quality elsewhere, but they're 2 big roles to get right and to land on a strong partnership. Morita would be a good start.

I can see a lot of 3-4-2-1 being played. Solid back 3 with two quick wing backs that can cover ground, counter at speed and be attacking outlets when needed. Can see why we would have wanted/maybe still want the lad from USG down the right. He's a physical monster in the same sort of mould as Davis. Then you want two physical units in midfield that can break up play and get us on the counter attack. Ideally one of them to get box to box. Speedy 10's playing inverted, strong pressers and the ability to finish with a mobile 9 as well (expect we will look for someone else with Emersonn as the bench/relief option). Really stepped up in the 2nd half of last season in particular but if he's anything more than 4th (arguably 5th) choice CM this year then it's a huge failure of recruitment (again).

Ultimately we will need some players as backup - who will largely only be in the match day squad if there are injuries or suspensions elsewhere. It's very difficult to recruit those sort of players - but easier to keep players we already have to fill those roles. I suspect the likes of Kipre, Taylor, Nunez, Hirst will fill those roles this season.

100% And the difference this season is that those players have PL/International experience and are a step up from our options last time such as Harness, Edmundson, Al Hamadi etc
