Growing up, I seem to remember that the games were quite a big thing but now they seem to be quite small fry when compared to other events. Probably little money available and a few stars are prioritising other things.

It's been paired down to such an extent that it's bearly worth the bother now. The cost implications to get it up and running are killing it.
Seems short sighted. Need the funding, so sell tights to highest bidder; seems logical on the face of it. But then the port has a much shorter reach and smaller audience interested in athletics. Next we’ll have hand wringing by athletics authorities and commentators wondering why fewer youngsters are entering the sport.
It’s only going ahead because Glasgow agreed to host it again at very late notice. It was given to Victoria, Australia but they pulled out a year or so ago.
Probably why it has had to scaled down a bit due to lack of planning time and inevitably the lack of funding available.
Gutting situation really as it’s always a very interesting multi sport competition that gives a fantastic opportunity to younger athletes and often a great exposure for them before they go onto compete in the Olympics.
The biggest issue is that when you look at Commonwealth nations, there aren’t many that would have the infrastructure or appetite to host such an event. It therefore falls on the UK and Australia, to foot the bill. Also India, Canada, South Africa. But the costs and political priorities don’t really make it an event that nations want to bother with

BBC Alba sky channel 169 are doing live coverage from 17:30 every day from tomorrow
Cheers, that's great news 👍
Thanks everyone else too for the replies, must admit I wasn't aware of the financial background, but agree with Swanners that by selling the rights to a subscription channel with a comparatively small audience, the organisers have shot themselves in the feet & placed them on a downward spiral.

The government were very clear in the support for the Commowealth games to be held in Glasgow, they should receive no public money or financial underwriting.
The organisers had to sell the rights to make money. The Beeb claimed they were outbid, TNTs bid is believed to be worth around 5million in the industry. Yes thats right the BBC bid low assuming theyd automatically get the deal as the nations favourite and the CG wouldnt possibly deny the nation FTA coverage, and realised too late that nope they were in an actual highest bidder wins contest
maybe Romesh can include that it in their next ad ;)

The Commonwealth Games are the Milk Cup of Athletics competitions.
People who don't ever win anything else, manage to win them, still mention it 40 years later and are confused that nobody else thinks it worth mentioning!
