Season ticket holder for over 40 years to miss out because of technology 05:49 - Jul 25 with 7581 viewsGrief

Is it my cousin, a lifelong fan, not moving with the times or the football club in the wrong?
He is in his seventies, he doesn’t have a smart phone, he has never had the need for one, but my cousin is now being told that without one he cannot renew his season ticket!

The club are meeting the requirements of the PL with digital ticketing.

If you have an argument about not keeping up with technology, then it is not the club's fault.

Old people not keeping up with technology is not ageism either.

I am getting old too.

Is it just possible that it's the PL that has a problem then!!

“Never had the need for one”

Surely this literally one example of needing one?

Smart phones have existed for 20 years now. It’s not new technology.

Get with the times or get left behind.

Many aspects of life were simply better prior to technology being available in a mass scale, and in many cases digitalisation is simply to solve a problem which didn't exist. Most digitalisation has simply been done to enable already enormously wealthy corporations and individuals to sell more advertising space, or to harvest data to enable the ads to be more targeted.

Consider bank cards, are they truly any more convenient than cash (or perhaps a better question would be did anyone find going to a cash point noticeably inconvenient before card payments became the norm?), or are they championed simply because the banks issuing the cards take a cut of all payments made, which they don't when cash payments are made?

When I used to go to Portman Road with my grandad, we parked on Portman Road car park, due to his declining mobility. The machines changed around 2018 ish from being coins only, to also accepting card. The difference in the queues before and after the change were staggering, as the clueless fumbled around trying to understand the new machines and how to pay by card.

In short, some examples of digitalisation have had obvious benefits, however most are merely changes to enrich the coffers of those with vested interests in advertising. My personal observation is also that those who evangelically preach the gospel of the digital age are typically utter dullards (i.e the massive bore at work who thinks A.I. is God's gift to man and outsources their brain capacity to the nefarious creations of the Altmans and Zuckerbergs of the world).

"Consider bank cards, are they truly any more convenient than cash"
Yes. I hate cash, it's filthy, and haven't used it in the UK in many, many years. In fact, the only place I have had to use it in Europe since COVID is Berlin, and that's only because they don't like paying tax.

it's not just that it's filthy. Digital is so much easier for pay, moving between accounts, my taxes, finances, and receipt keeping, splitting bills and the like.

I've always found the militant fervour many have against cash deeply strange and slightly unsettling. I severely doubt that the cleanliness of a singular coin is going to materially impact one's health, unless they are exceptionally unhealthy. If that is of concern then the growth of a bit of British spine may be in order. Think the French get it right here, required by law to accept cash with card otherwise mostly widely available.

As for the second point, I disagree with most other than splitting bills. You can still make phone calls to transfer cash to others or to other accounts. Hence my point regarding solving problems that did not previously exist. I do not believe that Making Tax Digital will be anything other than a headache for most small businesses or sole traders, especially businesses run by those a higher age, or businesses making a high proportion of their transactions in cash or cheque. Keeping physical receipts also simply isn't a Herculean labour. Banks used to give you ring binders for this sort of thing.

Er...yes, yes they are. Utterly bizarre take to be honest. Could easily list 50 reasons why card payments are superior.

Yep, I'm 71, got my first mobile in 2002, screen the size of a large postage stamp :) Much prefer the modern way of doing things, only used " real money " around 10 times or so in the last 6 years. You might call me a young dinosaur rather than an old one :) I appreciate that there are some people who have a genuine problem with modern tech, largely due to various health conditions. Seems to me the easiest way forward and it would have to come from the FA itself as they're the ones making the rules, not the clubs, is to make some sort of amendment to their rules, so those who have genuine difficulties can carry out what they want to do.

Is it possible there is someone more local to them who is available and trustworthy to help them?

HI - they live in a retirement complex, and yes they have younger neighbours who do help them - and I have said to them on several occasions to ask the neighbour to help, but they feel embarrassed to ask. I have tried phoning them 30 minutes or so before kick off, and they are describing to me over the phone what they can see on the screen, but it would be comical if it wasn't sad, trying to envision what they are doing, which buttons they are pressing. On things like NOW or Sky, as you move down the menu it puts a slightly brighter highlight around the option you are hovering over, but for people with poor eyesight and who don't understand the way it works, they don't seem to notice. Have tried using voice control, but it is really quite remarkable their capacity to get lost in the system and rarely do I manage to help them navigate their way to the Town game. My current plan is to take a series of screenshots on my next visit and try to refer to these from my mobile and use these to help me help them.

FWIW, my Dad went to his first game on Boxing day 1946, a 1-1 draw v QPR. All those years, and he still lives and breathes Town.

You just sound like an old luddite TBH. It's much easiler to pay by card than queuing at cash machines, and lighter than carrying a wodge of cash/coins in a wallet.

It's also much easier, quicker and more convenient to transfer money online than make a phonecall to do it.

And it's nonsense to say "Most digitalisation has simply been done to sell more advertising space." In what way do credit cards create advertising space?

I've always found the "militant fervour" to be from those like you who worship cash because it's what they've known for a long time and they don't like change... or rather they do, if you see what I mean

" In what way do credit cards create advertising space? "

Purchases can be tracked. With cash they cannot. I don't know the gdpr rules around credit card use and maybe I'm the naive one assuming Visa et al can't sell my purchasing history, but online purchases are of course tracked by platforms and sold to advertisers. That's what's being referred to I guess?

I should be amused not annoyed when I get ads for things I've just bought I suppose, but it actually boils my piss.

Why would I only use one coin if I used cash?

On making tax digital, I've been using it since April as a sole trader and I can 100% tell you it makes life so, so, so much easier.

Because it spends its life against thousands of people, in random places, pushed over filthy surfaces, and every coin and note has ruptures and details designed to carry thousands of bacteria including salmonella and ecoli.

” Most digitalisation has simply been done to enable already enormously wealthy corporations and individuals to sell more advertising space, or to harvest data to enable the ads to be more targeted.”

Whilst it’s true that most advances in technology promoted to consumers will make some organisation a lot of money, they will only be successful and profitable if they provide enough of a benefit and incentive to adopt by a significant number of the population. If they achieve this the product or service has proven its desirability.

Could we have continued without technological development? In many cases sure we could have, but that doesn’t mean we would have been better off without them. Otherwise people would be riding horses rather than driving cars.

yeah I guess when he said it's to create advertising space I maybe took him a bit literally. Certainly online they track your data. Not so sure about using your credit card out in the real world. I don't see ads for coffee popping up after buying one.

I'd say cookies (and forms you fill in) are more the problem than the payment card. Generally you'd want to get to the person before they've used the payment card!

One place that did amuse, with regards to ads for things you've just bought, was DFS. Shortly after buying a sofa from them, 4 years ago, they just kept sending me offers for more sofas! How many sofas do they think someone needs?! The irony is, four years on I'm probably more in a market for one, and they're not sending me any marketing anymore!

I'm not sure they're designed to carry germs - that would be quite the conspiracy.

As for using cash in Berlin, it's a broad German trait and it was only Covid that really started moving the dial here. Germans, especially in the former East, are very wary of anything through which data can be gathered, or freedoms can be constrained. Tax-dodging has nothing to do with it.

Cards are much more convenient than cash, although I would be concerned about reliance on them if cash were to disappear altogether. What would we do if the Americsn payment systems went down or were withdrawn? It could make us vulnerable.

Some aspects of life were better before technology. Anyone could walk into a supermarket and buy items on offer. To get the best prices we now need to register for their loyalty card, download their app, log into the app each week to activate offers and then checkout the items ourselves at a machine. We do the work for them and they have all our data.

Oh, because I visit a fair bit and all the Germans and British emigrants I know there tell me it's very, very much to do with Germans not wanting to pay tax.

It was just a facetious comment, calm down. I realise they are not literally designed for that, but if you were designing a device to carry and spread germs then coins like we use are precisely what would be designed.
