He was, but we have seen the upside. If he can just temper the nonsense he can still be a top striker.

Thats how their model works. They got him for us at the base release clause knowing they could sell him on for a profit if it didnt immediately work out. One day the chickens will come home to roost, but not yet!

He's one I can see them letting out on loan late in the window. I can't see anyone paying the sort of fee they would want after last season and they'd hope he could go somewhere else and prove himself ready for a sale next summer. That said, if we get Espi he isn't going to be one we go back for.

He is just hopelessly unsuited to a team that encounters a low a block on a regular basis. He had so much room to run in behind with us which really suited him. Also, he was booked a lot and sent off once (maybe twice), doing all the sorts of things he could get away with when playing for us but refs will never let you get away with at a big club. He will need to go to a mid table team to rebuild I think.

Chelsea was always an odd choice, but obviously saw a chance with the Club World Cup and a decent contract etc. Always felt that a move to Everton or Newcastle may have offered a better long term development option, but I guess the ££ talks.

Chelsea have already spent over £300,000,000 this summer although they probably pulled in around £100,000,000 from sales. They have a massive squad, including 6 goal keepers aged 21 or over. They are also absent from UEFA gravy train not having qualified for European football 2026/27. They have a lot to do to balance the books.

It wasn’t odd. They needed a striker and he knew Maresca from his time at City. The other offer on the table was from United who had almost been relegated.

Knowing a manager only matters if you’re at a club that doesn’t bin them off every time the wind changes.
| Danny Welbeck on 17:57 - Jul 27 with 659 views | IpswichTownBlue | There's something about me that wouldn't want Delap back. Don't get me wrong, he had an impressive season but just think what we're building now is a bit different. Delap was a little head down and run which I don't think bought the best out of those around him. I just don't know if his game would blend in with what O'Neil is trying to build. | | | |

If he'd had scored 12 goals for say a Leicester or West Ham instead of us that same season, some Town fans would be screaming for him. Sadly some still have hurt feelings about the departure and now talk him down as a bad signing. He wouldn't be, although he suits McKenna's system well, and Delap at the start of 24/25 played that role better than anyone else we ever had play it, I don't know of O'Neil would get the best out of him in his system, which is far more defensive. It is dead point anyway, as we couldn't afford the wage, Chelsea would want a silly fee if we were to buy him, and he's not going to take a pay cut to come back to Ipswich when someone like Newcastle or Everton will be able to stump up a better deal, even on loan, than us.

Any idea what we "are building now"? Hopefully, a team that will have a chance of staying up, but very little idea about style of play, formation etc. I think Delap would be ideal for a team scrapping for possession & points.

I'm just making the point that its a different manager, different ideas who i'm sure has his own players in mind.

Blimey. That’s stupid money for someone who had an excellent half season and reasonable 2nd half season, although with some temperament issues. No wonder they’re £1.4BN in debt.
