I do think there is a genuine question mark there, had a great season and will have his opportunity of course but very different looking good at Ashton Gate than Anfield. We need a like for like 6 and then a big splash to go alongside whoever gets the shirt.

I was frankly quite underwhelmed by his abilities in possession last season. I know how good he is in duels, but I do worry PL midfielders have the attributes to run rings around him. Can he get around the pitch well enough? I fear he could suffer the same issues Morsy did. Look neat and tidy for 85 mins but for 5 crucial mins he's unable to keep his shape.

Certainly won’t have that extra second on the turn. I don’t see why Davis is so nailed on either with the amount of defending we will be doing. [Post edited 30 Jul 12:07]

I think he certainly would be if he was fully fit with a pre season, but you can't go into the opening of the season with Humphreys, Barbrook and Nunez. But we need numbers and quality in there, for throughout the season, it's a squad game, and Matusiwa is definitely somebody I think can be in the squad good enough to compete in the PL. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He's clear of Harry Clarke and Darnell Furlong at RWB, Burns could be the alternative RWB. Would prefer to strengthen, but given our activity, would be further down the list than other areas.

Is he clear of Furlong, given the latter's defensive abilities?

It’s more of what you need rather than just PL players on the last year of their contracts. Get them earlier if you can. I like the Diop signing a lot of course but there’s other avenues to explore as well. As Sunderland proved it’s not just PL experience, it’s top level European experience with pace/power/physicality. Don’t think any of their signings had kicked a ball in England before last year. The Fabrizio link to Brazilian LCB from Lille was the most exciting player than fit this mould but seems to have gone quiet? [Post edited 30 Jul 12:36]

Unsure at the moment One of my favourite players last season, but sometimes he turned slower than morsy with the ball. I think if we aren't playing GK to CM ball, he may well be ok, but if his job will be dropping to get the ball from the keeper etc, I do worry how he will do against the speed of prem presses when at times he struggled against champ ones at this.

I think the argument is that with 3 CBs, that's less of a concern. And tbf on the other flank, although I love Leif, Townsend was probably more reliable defensively. But I would be underwhelmed if we were to start the season with Johnson in the starting 11 in that slot.

I also think the Starting XI / Reserve XI mindset is becoming outdated - more a group of ~15 players who you expect to make up the vast majority of starts, ~5 who you expect to be in the 20 man squad most weeks, and ~5 who effectively act as backup of any of the 20 are unavailable. So for me we need 3 "starting" midfielders for 2 CM spots - Matusiwa being one of them. Also why people who are saying we need to get rid of everyone who isn't "up to scratch" (e.g. Taylor) - if we have 5 or 6 players who act as backup, its very difficult to sell that role to a new signing, so it could well be those players are made up of Button, Kipre, Furlong, Nunez, Taylor and Hirst.

Not really outdated, it’s not a World Cup, it’s a 38 game league season. If someone gets injured you need someone who can replace one if the most important positions on the park, Azor isn’t proven at the level either and competition is good.

Azor also not fit as yet after his operation and it's always hard playing catch up especially at a higher level. I am very disappointed we have not as yet managed to secure any additional quality in midfield, sure we are trying but as yet we are falling short of what is required

My point is more that for most positions, particularly central/attacking midfield, you want a group of players who you expect, and are comfortable with, them to start at least half of the games and come on as subs across the rest. Provides protection against not only fitness issues, but also form and fatigue - it's not a material drop off if one misses out and another comes in. Under a "starting XI" mindset, there has been a lot of discussion about whether Azor is good enough to warrant one of the two starting CM positions. I think that debate assumes that his back-up will be notably worse, and therefore if Azor isn't good enough the backup won't be either. Perhaps we are coming to the same conclusion that we need two "starting" CMs to join, but with different perspectives on how close Matusiwa will be to starting as often as the other two.

The way that I see it with Matusiwa is - is he a difference maker? Will he be able to influence games for us? I appreciate Stach at Leeds and Xhaka at Sunderland have slightly different roles, but they were massive players for them who influenced games, on their own at times. I don’t think Matusiwa quite has that in his locker - as much as I think he’s a good player. I think he’d hold his own in the Prem, and be a safe bet - Ala Morsy. But would he be influential do us?

Yeah just think CM in the PL is a different animal to players that could come on and play across the front 3 after 75 minutes. Going to be our most important business of the summer and if Taylor goes we obviously need 3.

Furlong is ahead of Johnson, hence why he played nearly double Johnson's minutes from 2 seasons. If Johnson couldnt push Furlong out as an attacking defender in the Championship, he's not going to do it at a higher level.

He's not. His technical ability is very limited, and that will be exposed at Premier League level. Not getting younger either. Decent back-up, nothing more.
