Someone please tell me I'm being a massive wet blanket.
I'm not one of those proud numpties who have been loudly panicking since May, and I'm absolutely happy with our business so far. But this week has just got me slightly jittery. It's just starting to tip the scales towards taking 'too long'.
And again I'm patient and a happy clapper, so I'm not expecting the moon on a stick and will probably be happy again after a couple more signings. But I'm now definitely not in 'its all good, it'll take whatever it takes' mode, I want stuff to start happening pretty soon, to be comfortable again. Yep I know, hugely entitled.

I think our recruitment team are still very poor. I’m not sure they are any better than 3 years ago. They seem to piggyback off the back of other teams who bid on players , then jump in. Have we no targets of our own ? No ideas ? No thinking out the box ? We badly need midfielders and we jump in on a deal Hull are interested in. A player who really isn’t good enough either. Have we no targets of our own ? We just seem to wait for others to make a move. I’m not hugely impressed with any of our signings so far apart from maybe Diop our team looks woeful for a Premier League campaign. |  | | |

I think you're after reassurance, and you know rationally that summers never go perfectly, and that it's especially hard when going from champ to PL. The world cup was probably a minor hindrance. Losing Kieran was a major hindrance, and it's a great shame that he walked out on us. But there we are.
Personally, I think we've made a reasonably promising start in the transfer market. It's perfectly possible that Scherpen, Diop and Emersonn turn out to be cracking signings, and Fatawu seems to have made a promising start.
I think we'll get enough deals done and probably bring in players that are of the right kinds, at least on paper. However, I do think that we will complete our squad a bit later than would be ideal, putting us on the back foot. I certainly don't say that that's anyone's fault - I think teams at our level in the food chain have to wait for others, we have more business to do than most, and again losing the manager must have put us back chronologically.
It feels like we're always behind the 8 ball at the start of the season, but that's life in modern football I think.
We need a really really solid and high quality central midfielder above all else, I feel. Plainly this will not have escaped the attention of the powers that be.
And on a note of more positivity, there really is a genuine chance that players who either didn't click under Kieran, or who were just out of favour for whatever reason, turn a corner under the new boss. That does happen. We've had players come to us who have dropped from previous form. Likewise, we've had players come to us who have elevated their game in our set-up. The same goes for players who have left us and then either disappointed or thrived. So you never know, we may get a rejuvenated Akpom who is a revelation, and/or we may find that Egeli in the 10 slot under GON, having continued to acclimatise over the summer, justifies the bullish fee.
You never know, GON might even find a way of JClarke and Philogene thriving in the same 11. And if we /do/ go for 3 at the back, that entirely changes the dynamic and balance of the side, and we may find that Davis is freed up to do what he does best (and better than in our last Prem season), or that Johnson is much better suited to such a shape. There are many possibilities. Some will disappoint, some may well surprise on the upside.
Finally, we have a Brazilian, our first Japanese player, and a double Dutch goalkeeping department. There's definitely excitement to be found if one concentrates on the half of the glass that is full.
Like our away kit, this season will bring something a bit new but with a very well known foundation, and us lot will doubtless disagree on it!

Having worked with a team full of Portuguese at Wolves and as a manager in France I'm sure GON has his own international network he can tap on
Plus any decent scout knows there is plenty of value out there. For example, we desperately need a striker. So why not look at one of the senior Egyptian strikers at Al Ahly. Or Maeda's Japanese teammate Ueda at Feyenoord? Need a MF? Nakamura at Reims. Or Ounahi at Girona?
Don't tell me our scouting system abroad has still not improved one bit and we are waiting for agents to push players to us a la Cajuste. Or falling back on ex-players like Delap and Enciso.
Unless Ashton wants only players with past British experience.
At least its a step up from wanting only native English speakers last time round

not a fan of our ceo/chairman, but it's a balance between getting them in early or getting the right one in late.
sunderland wouldn't have had xhaka available to play in a 31st july friendly, and signed 6 further players after that, 4 of whom were starters.

I do tend to agree! We have the funds, data at Clara Vista and more expansive network, as we’ve been told. Combine that with a coach that has experience with international players and has managed abroad, then you’d think we’d be linked with all kinds of players that haven’t previously played for clubs in the UK.
Ensico would be a proper signing and he’s developed further since we had him but still want to be testing the waters further afield in certain areas. I don’t understand the HAS to have PL experience all the time when clubs have proved that you can get hungry players in international leagues with all the physical attributes that can come in and hit the ground running. Usually better value and players that want to make their mark in England.
Were Leeds worried if Stach had played any Premier League games?
Slight concern with 30 year olds that were on the last contractural year at their previous club. You present them with a 4-5 year deal and they’re suddenly in a v.comfortable place, which could be an issue if we are a struggling side. Not saying that will happen with ours of course but you do want a mix with some outside the box thinking.
As you say, we don’t want agents pushing players to us in the last week of August because we are short. Thats happened the last two summers with questionable results.
But anyway trying to be positive, improvements on 2024 summer but still a ways to go. [Post edited 1 Aug 5:07]
