| Israeli West Bank settlers ultra extreme views on 13:45 - Aug 1 with 2321 views | SouthBucksBlue | I saw this article earlier and I was absolutely disgusted. This guy is a lawyer so presumably not unintelligent but justifies this behaviour by referring to something promised in a religious document (from one of hundreds of doctrines that exist) from over two thousand years ago. It’s good to see the BBC reporting this kind of thing for a change. With regards to the concerning rise in antisemitism in the U.K. and Europe I’ve always thought that this would reduce if British and European Jewry did more to distance itself from the vile conduct of Israel. Instead governments continue the supply of military support and seem scared to intervene. Also there are such as Lord Pannick who recently tried to evoke legal proceedings to prevent Kier Starmer recognising Palestine as a state. | | | |

"With regards to the concerning rise in Islamophobia in the U.K. and Europe I’ve always thought that this would reduce if British and European Muslims did more to distance themselves from the vile conduct of Islamists". Victim blaming at it's very worst. We actually has a few posters called out for stating that Islam was the problem, not a warped interpretation of Islam. It went to the pages. But Jews are obligated to called out the actions of Israel to reduce racism against them? Staggering. I'd like to think that the same posters who spent several pages on the issue of Islamophobia will do the same on your contribution to this thread. So far there is one. Me. We'll see. I don’t see it as victim blaming. I see it as a pertinent question when an vile extremist regime continues to invade and steal other peoples land, bulldozes their homes and builds their own because the bible says it’s okay and international law doesn’t apply. Factor in the continuing killings in Gaza during the ceasefire which are largely unreported and for good measure the delightful IDF tactic of following up their attacks to get the first responders as well. Why isn’t this behaviour being condemned by wider Jewry do you think?

And all that you list is as much to do with Alfie Cohen in Golders Green as the Islamist attack in Berlin has to do with Omar Khan of Tower Hamlets. Next I meet I see my Chinese neighbour I’ll demand that he is more vocal about Xi’s treatment of the Uyghurs. That way less people will be racist towards him and his family. Staggering that people think this way. Racism is always the fault of the racists. Not the victims.

The reality is that ignorant racists will discriminate against Alfie Cohen. Maybe if European Jewry distanced itself from the Israeli regime, Alfie Cohen would be perceived differently and not discriminated against because of the actions of Israel. [Post edited 1 Aug 18:02]

And, as stated, the prevalent belief that people of Islam should call out the actions of Hamas and Al Qaeda it was rightly shouted down that they should not be responsible for actions of the extreme. Blaming innocent people because of the actions of others who happen to follow their creed or sect is the start of a very slippery slope. It is good that the BBC is publicising these beliefs, however. It's good for as many people as possible to find out how ridiculous these views are, as well as dangerousm

It can be helpful for community leaders to condemn and distance the wider community from atrocities carried out in the name of their community/faith though, no? It must help diffuse tensions and most people would realise such leaders or the community as a whole aren’t responsible. The condemnation by UK Muslim leaders of the Hamas attacks on 7th October seemed welcome at the time, for example - https://www.jewishnews.co.uk/e

I think this is pretty misguided in truth. I hate the actions of Israel as much as anyone, and I have my reasons for that, but I don’t think calling on just the Jewish community to speak up against it is right or fair. Anyone supporting the actions of Israel’s government is despicable, regardless of their religion, in the same way that anyone supporting Hamas’ actions is equally despicable. We should all call out these horrendous actions at every opportunity, but expecting one particular group to take the lead on that isn’t right in my opinion.

That’s great and should be welcomed. Is the problem simply that it’s good that these groups denounce the violence but there shouldn’t be any expectation on them to do so? If so that seems quite a fine line yet I do see that distinction. TBH it’s an area that continually confuses me because it’s so heated/political/weaponised.

The Archbishop of Canterbury doesn’t condemn attacks carried out by Christian terrorists. Surely European Christians should be condemning acts of violence carried out in Gods name by other Christians. If not, maybe people will start thinking unkindly of European Christians. Hmmm….yeah…when you say it out loud it does sound…..ridiculous.

My point is Islamophobia and anti-Semitism should not be accepted or expected just because because do not denounce vile actions which happen in the name of their religion. It's not even acceptable if they outright support it. I get how it can be difficult but not sinking to the lowest level is the first step in fighting back.

I agree. Our government and all governments should be doing far more to condemn and ostracise Israel's government, but to demand non-Israeli Jews take action is unfair. However, anybody actively supporting Israel's actions is contemptible, in my opinion. Also, the Israeli electorate bear some responsibility for the actions carried out in their name, and for their apparent lack of action to remedy the war crimes carried out by their monstrous government and armed forces.

Using your logic, the Israeli electorate will bear the same responsibility as those who re elected the Blair government in 2005, just two years after 200,000 innocent civilians were killed in his illegal war in Iraq. Thankfully, the latest polls suggest that the Israeli electorate won’t do that. https://www.haaretz.com/israel And for those who don’t know, Netanyahu hasn’t won a majority fur several years and is only kept in power by a coalition with extremism’s and terrorist supporters. The war and the killing of hungry and innocent people do not bring us security, they only give birth to more pain".[71] On 1 March, protesters in Kafr Kanna called for an end to the war, to Israel's attacks on Palestinians, and to Israel's planned invasion of Rafah.[72] On 9 March, protesters in Umm al-Fahm demonstrated in opposition to the war.[73] Protesters paraglided over Netanyahu's home on 25 March, carrying slogans accusing him for not taking responsibility for the 7 October attack.[74] Five members of the Free Jerusalem movement were reportedly arrested for "protesting against the criminal attack on Gaza".[75] In May 2024, six anti-war protesters were forcibly arrested during a Palestinian solidarity demonstration in Haifa.[76] In June 2024, Israeli police arrested at least three antiwar demonstrators protesting against the Nuseirat refugee camp massacre.[77][78] In April 2025, thousands of Israelis held anti-war demonstrations in Tel Aviv against Israel's actions against Palestinians and holding pictures of Palestinian children who had been killed by Israel.[79]” Edit. So, after a long deflection post, what is your views on Jews being held responsible for Israels oppression of and attempted genocide of the Palastinians? My opinion is that it is unfair but a natural response by reasonable people around the world. Israels behaviour encourages the genuine antisemites globally. There is absolutely no defence for the Israeli population who allow this situation to continue and any listing of a few miserable protests is an insult to our intelligence. Netanyahu and the extremists were democratically elected by Israelis who are predominantly Jewish.

When I was growing up in the UK, and my accent wasn’t obviously from Suffolk, I didn’t much enjoy being compared to Irish terrorists. Or on occasion being spat at. My first real job in the UK came about after I was considering taking my case to the Campaign for Racial Equality that was taking UK government to court for discrimination against people like myself. When I got that job, I was still summoned to the boss, to be told they were worried about my “divided” loyalty. I also always remember a teacher telling a bunch of National Front campaigners to get away from the school, and saying what they could do with their leaflets. They weren’t keen on Irish people, it was before it was cool. Strangely enough a person I had been at a previous Catholic school, and who brought presents back from the Popes visit was a member of the NF. Anyhoo, “a natural response of reasonable people” Bollox.

Because we are not Israelis. Though many of us do condemn their current government anyway. But we have no traction. Edit: removed swear word which made it look like I was condemning all Israelis , which I don’t - only those who enable Netanyahu’s govt. Further edit: I’ll add also that maybe some Jewish individuals around the world don’t want to call out & condemn the Netanyahu regime precisely because they fear antisemitic repercussion/s, so don’t want to expose themselves as being Jewish.
