It was for lifting in camera gear. Cameras have become smaller and they just carry them in by hand these days.

| Latest images from PR West Stand development… on 06:54 - Aug 2 with 1400 views | Benters | True story. Many moons ago I was working on a new housing estate in Burnham on Crouch, and we’d have these metal bins that went on the front of forklifts to clear stuff up and put in skips.Anyway talking to the site agent I happened to say ‘a clean site is a happy site’ he reckoned he liked that and painted the slogan on the bins. What a claim to fame 😵💫 | |

When it was built my dad convinced me it was an escape hatch with a slide to the practice pitch in case of emergencies. Would’ve been some ride. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yes I remember watching the tv crew or whoever winching the cameras up from the ground through that door on ropes or cables. On a similar note, who remembers the cameraman on the cherry pickers above the Churchmans roof? On a windy day he would be swaying in the breeze!

Yeah that happened occasionally in the early 80s when the motd crue were there. Made it really feel like a big game. Bit of a waste of time really as they only used the shot for the team lineups.

As long as it’s not ‘one and plenty’ it will be ok 👍

Novotel has been back to normality for around 18 months now , not an immigrant in sight and long May it continue.
| Latest images from PR West Stand development… on 09:28 - Aug 2 with 407 views | wrightsrightglove | About now is when I’d be panicking if I was running the site. I thought they were making decent progress a couple of weeks ago but that seems to have slowed and it’ll be a mammoth effort to get it done before the Sunderland game (I’m sure it’ll be usable but still with a lot of work left to do. I’d have expected it to be almost fully enclosed by now and the groundworks to be pretty much complete | | | |

I did a charity abseil off the West Stand many years ago, and we used that hatch to make our decent. The leaning back into a horizontal position bit at the start is terrifying, but once you start decending it's great fun!

Yeah absolutely. Definitely useable, but definitely not the finished article. A metaphor for the first team? Quite possibly.

It's a good job that both the building work and our midfield will have a lot more time and money invested in them over the next month then isn't it?
