Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? 07:12 - Aug 3 with 5844 viewsNthQldITFC

The Met Office is going to announce today that this July in England has seen less than half of the rainfall of the previous record driest July in the last 190 years.

Why aren't YOU talking about climate change?

It's the biggest issue we face. It's the biggest issue our children face.

Why aren't YOU talking about climate change?

Food prices are going to reflect this imminently, but that's only the beginning.

Why aren't YOU talking about climate change?

We can still make a difference, but we need to get talking.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

What’s the point? Seriously?
Climate change isn’t something that is going to happen or is imminent. It has happened. There is no stopping it. Any discussion about the mechanics of what to do is immediately shot down by mullahs on both sides. Like with so many many things talking is pointless, all it does is enflame the radicals and disengage the curious.
Climate change is the cost of civilisation.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

That's a real defeatist attitude though.

Isn't it worth putting up a bit of a fight? Not because some miraculous turnaround is possible, but because we can make things a little bit less bad.

I've downvoted and then cancelled it because I don't know what's behind your response.

Everyone can see what's happening, and our responses are driven by lots of different emotions.

We kind of need to get over the emotions, hard as that may be, and talk about cold , hard realities.

Whilst you are correct that we have gone behind the point of no return with melting ice and rising sea levels, we can still stop the planet reaching dangerous heat levels. Even slowing temperatures rising by .5 degrees can protect the planet form severe heat waves.

But you are right, there is neither the political or public will to do something about it. Anecdotally, it’s very hard to discuss climate change with people in a Scotland when the summers are getting a little warmer but nothing like what is happening on mainland Europe.

Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

Business as usual.

Of course it's a metaphor, but it's fundamentally true that we could decide on an individual-, a national- and/or a world-level to make fundamental changes to the way we live to radically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We could make a small to middling difference perhaps.

Have you ever been personally in a behaviour pattern, a relationship perhaps, where you keep ploughing on, knowing you're doing yourself real harm, but feeling absolutely no hope or motivation to get out of it? But then something happens, you suddenly change, and things are so much better all of a sudden, and you wonder why you didn't try before? It al seems like madness?

You're dead right, of course, that so much of it is baked in, and I guarantee you that I never feel judgemental about this because I understand the hopelessness. But to give up is to just stay in that sh!tty relationship and deny yourself the chance of something even just a little bit better.

Yet we have feral youths setting fire to fields etc.

In Colchester on Friday the youth thought it would be a good idea to set fire to the old ranges (MOD Land).

Same again yesterday another fire.

I feel sorry for the wildlife.

I'll be cheeky and take this opportunity to bump this, Benters, cos I know you do like to engage sometimes:

Its just summer though, and it was hot in 1976........ by NthQldITFC 30 Jul 8:44
Can I respectfully ask you a serious question Benters, all joking and all prejudice aside:

Do you accept that increasing human waste gas emissions into the atmosphere have created a situation where we are increasingly affecting the overall climate of the planet, and consequently are causing a big increase in severe weather occurrences?

I do ask that without any side at all, hoping for a straight answer, but accepting if you don't want to answer it.

There are parts of our region showing 0% moisture down to 40cm and only 1% at 100cm. It currently looks like we will have next to no rainfall in the East for the next 2 weeks.

Lots of people talking about it, that’s not the issue, it’s collective global responsibility to do something about it that is the issue. Known and documented psychological phenomenon called diffusion of responsibility.

The fact is that major structural decisions, such as energy policy, industrial regulation, and corporate emissions, sit with governments and large companies, not individuals. That creates a psychological offloading effect: people feel the “real” responsibility lies elsewhere, which lowers their own sense of urgency to the situation even while they may genuinely care about the issue.

Like I said, lots of people are talking about it, but that’s not going to change anything.

People knew about global warming from the 80s onwards but didn’t seriously tackle it. Of all generations, it’s the youngsters who have done the least harm to both the environment and to wildlife.

But not enough people talking about it, at a high enough volume, to make it politically imperative for governments to act. So drumming up discussion as much as possible is a strategy.

Yep. One of my A'levels was Geography and one of my teachers used to bang on about climate change (from '86 to '88)

Tbh, we all thought she was a bit mad and didn't believe her talk of impending climate catastrophe if we carried on our path.

I bumped into her a few years ago and reminded her of what she had told us and how she was absolutely spot on, probably 20 years ahead of her time.

Another example is Thatcher who (as much as I dislike her) called it right in one of her final speeches. A huge missed opportunity politically as she genuinely got it (being a Scientist am sure helped) decades ahead of others in politics.

One massive positive is that the youngsters today are so much better informed than we ever were. We will get better but it seems only once the impact is staring us in the face at a much bigger cost than if we had acted decades ago...

Climate change has already generated enormous public discourse for over three decades, arguably more sustained media and political attention than almost any other policy issue, yet emissions have kept rising. If volume of talk were the binding constraint, I’d expect more progress by now given how much airtime it already commands.

Trouble is discussion often substitutes for action rather than driving it, basically this is “moral licensing” or “slacktivism”; people post, argue, or discuss, feel they’ve contributed, and that satisfies the psychological itch to act, reducing pressure to do anything costlier.
