Would like to see a back 3 of O'Shea. Diop and Greaves with Leif LWB and Wan Bissaka RWB. No idea if it would truly work but we need a solid foundation at the back to try and build upon for results this season.

That would be no more solid than a back four. We clearly aren't going to be playing three at the back.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see O’Shea, Dip and Greaves all line up against Manchester Untited.

Wan Bissaka's big problem at United was that he was pretty much ineffective as soon as he crossed the half way line. If we're looking for wing backs Johnson is probably a better option. Unless it's a version of the McKenna system but with one more at the back. Davis effectively a winger while everyone else shifts across. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Well Kipre is 30 odd and hadn’t played in PL for a reason, we still need to a few more back there IMO, one injury and we are toast.

I think we've got the profiles for it. Arguably gets the best from Leif who likes to get forward but perhaps not the most robust defensively. Greaves is a perfect profile for left of a back 3 and O'Shea similarly on the right. Both predominantly central defenders but have also played at full back. Diop is an ideal central option. I like the idea of it and wouldn't rule it out, GO'N has a history of adopting it. More of a back 5 out of possession and 3 in. I think we'd need an addition on the right. Furlong is solid but doesn't have the offensive quality for the PL, Johnson might work there, he's fine, not convinced he's quite good enough though.

Not with Azor and/or Luis in there too, it’ll peave us far too short on numbers elsewhere and kill our ball progression. Just make sure one or both of the CMs do the Skuse thing and stay behind the ball at all times in front of the two CBs.

Agree with all of this, potentially we see McAteer line up at RWB? I thought he looked fine at RB last night, he's always been good at the defensive work. O'Shea Diop Greaves McAteer Luis +1 Davis Fatawu Maeda Enciso

Thought had crossed my mind too re. McAteer. He's certainly got the physical attributes and I did wonder whether GON putting him at RB was to have a bit of a look at him in a more defensive capacity. That line up has shades of a GON Wolves side. Man for man I don't think we're as good, Leif is no Ait-Nouri and they were certainly much stronger in the middle than we look currently, although another addition or 2 is likely there. Fatawu and Enciso could be our Neto & Cunha although again, not sure they're in that league. Defensively I don't think we're any weaker than they were though. Be interesting to see how GON approaches it, I suspect we'll see a variety of approaches as he has alluded to already and demonstrated in the past.
