The W U20 World Cup is due to be held in Poland.

| FIFA UEFA stand off seems a gamble. on 20:54 - Aug 6 with 1676 views | NederlandseBlue | I fear UEFA has overplayed its hand. Very few associations have officially withdrawn support, and more countries have come out backing Infantino than opposing him. It's not surprising; why would they bite the hand that feeds them? As for the U20 Women's World Cup, Poland are unlikely to withdraw from a competition they are hosting and competing in for the first time. That plus threatening who hosts the Men's World Cup final over Spain is fracturing Europe. The English FA publicly withdrawing support means we can forget any chance of winning the right to host a major football tournament for the next few years. | |

| FIFA UEFA stand off seems a gamble. on 21:04 - Aug 6 with 1621 views | Perublue | Just on the subject of hosting under 20 and under 17 world cups men and women… FIFA are very flexible/cavalier shall we say in dropping and appointing hosts and also delaying at the drop of a hat for all manner of reasons … I’ve seen it many times in the last decade. So maybe not the biggest issue…. For FIFA anyway. [Post edited 6 Aug 21:05]

On the first point, if UEFA did stay firm then those nations will have considerably less to feed them, its rather obvious that any World Cups etc not featuring Europe will generate nowhere near as much revenue as they do today Second paragraph is rather more pertinent though, it’s one thing UEFA standing tough but persuading the member nations to stay in line behind might be a much trickier ask!

Don't disagree but (the threat of) a boycott is all UEFA has now. Plus it looks like Europe telling the rest of the world what it should do, which is not a great look.

I'm talking about becoming the host of tournaments not yet decided. Last year FIFA VPs were encouraging England to bid for the Men's World Cup 2038. Germany are also interested. The rotation rule could have been overlooked; it definitely will not be if Infantino is still in charge when the decision is made. Expect 2038 to be in the US, not Europe.

We were never getting another WC anyway. If we were to get one we’d have had it by now.

Are you advocating for the continuation of red cards being overturned, selling off the World Cup to private investors, eye watering ticket prices, FIfa becoming ticket touts earning 15% from both ends in ticket resales, making up a peace prize. He needs to be stopped, we need to make stand, whatever the consequences.

No. I'm delighted someone is taking a principled stand. I think it is long overdue. But there should have been much better coordination and an effort to reach out to other associations. Where is the alternative Presidential candidate? Where is the vision of an better governance structure? Where is the commitment to smaller associations that they will not financially lose out if they join? There needs to be something to rally around rather than just saying the status quo cannot continue.

Those things take time, and an immediate reaction was needed.

Agree 100%. It's right to do what's right at any time it's necessary. Glad they've made a stand, they should stick to it. Any Fifa WC with Infantino still in place would be thoroughly unenjoyable & leave a bad taste - even if we were to win the damn thing it would feel like a hollow victory. Anyone doubting that should think of this year's final, and how they would have felt if Argentina (for whom Spain's players, not the goal, were the target) had won. [Post edited 7 Aug 9:23]

It would’ve annoyed me if Argentina had won the WC - especially so playing like how they did. But in that scenario, then that would’ve been how football sometimes works with the poorer and more cynical team winning. It’s the off-field stuff which grates me - the ultra expensive tickets, the obsession with a bunch of celebrities posing in the stands, the overtly political interventions etc. [Post edited 7 Aug 9:37]

All that too (esp the suspending of the red card) - but refs seemingly having been instructed to give Messi a free pass was well over & above normal gamesmanship - and it's an accumulation of everything else as well. The privatisation manoeuvre was just the last straw. [Post edited 7 Aug 9:29]

| FIFA UEFA stand off seems a gamble. on 10:21 - Aug 7 with 730 views | pointofblue | Money is now talking as other associations have started to back Infantino. UEFA's best approach may be to accept him staying in place until the November election, it put someone forward and prepare to withdraw from FIFA if Infantino wins it. They need to hold firm that, as long as they stay together, they have a lot of power. No one wants to watch a World Cup, whether at international or club level, without Europe's biggest nations being involved. It immediately dilutes it. | |

No real suprise to see Mexico backing him and I assume Fifa probably still owes them money for the World Cup like it does other members, so in their best interests if he has tried the same tactics as he has with the likes of Jordan. I really hope UEFA sticks to its guns. When Blatter went I am sure we were all hopeful of a cleanup but it just hasn't improved. It is amazing that an organisation that has seen more than 50 of its members criminally charged still in existance.

Is it what you're most worried about..... not looking good? Life isn't perfect. Let's get out of FIFA because it's always been corrupt. Even before Infantino. We don't need FIFA. Start again. I'm sorry but I don't care about the feelings of smaller footballing nations when they're just being used as pawns to keep FIFA in the hot seat skimming off billions. Even if a world cup are cancelled whilst they're reorganising... who cares? Why are we giving world cups to Qatar, USA and Saudi who don't have any real feeling or history with football. We know why. Bring the new World Cup back to Europe and South America where it grew up with the people and their love for the game. Strip it back to how it was with less commercialisation and no corruption.

The immediate reaction needed to have started years ago and should have been about building coalitions to prevent this even being an option. None of this is unexpected, they've been doing this in plain sight for at least a decade. It's too late now.

The US will get leaned on by Infantino's best friend in the White House and that will see the CONCACAF drop its opposition. UEFA is essentially alone.
