| Really strong squad now. Do we need more new players after Ensico? 17:04 - Aug 17 with 3037 views | rexron | There are players from last season who will struggle to get in the team. Matsuiwa, Hirst, Mcateer and Philogene may not play a lot. But. It's mainly a good thing. Competition for places is very important, and we probably lacked it last time in the PL. | |

Yep, the truth is now you can't at this level simply have squad fillers, we've upgraded and more is needed..

Think we've learned the lessons of 2 seasons ago - some players may be great in the Championship but that could be their limit.
| Really strong squad now. Do we need more new players after Ensico? on 17:13 - Aug 17 with 2557 views | _CliveBaker_ | Squad places must be a factor now. GK: Scherpen, Van Ovelen, Walton FB: Ouattara (u21), Davis, Furlong, Johnson CB: O'Shea, Diop, Greaves, Kipre CM: Matusiwa, Florentino, Lukic, Nunez, Taylor AT: Fatawu, McAteer, Enciso, Egeli (u21), Maeda, J. Clarke, Philogene, Mehmeti 9: Emersonn, Akpom, Hirst I make that 27, with 25 counting towards the squad cap. So we're in 1 in, 1 out territory on the above. I've not made any room for Humphreys, Ogbene or Al-Hamadi who will all depart one way or another. Hirst is the most obvious departure, I think Johnson might be one to make way as well with Ouattara's versatility and O'Shea able to play at RB. That would make room for another defender. Taylor if we get a good fee, and possibly 1 of Mehmeti or Philogene too. I can see a world where another 3 over 21's come in, but that'll require us to make some room. | | | |

Yeah, no chance we are going in with just Emersonn and Akpom for staters. Obviously, another midfielder is rumored and if it's not Palacios then I am sure there will be a plan B there. I am pretty convinced at least another defender is coming in as well and then I would not be shocked if one or two more after. Once we get in marquee creative or ball playing midfielder we should look to move Jack Taylor, Nunez probably stays as has a bit more position versatility. A few more surprise exits are not out of the question after the obvious that we need to release. We must continue to level up. [Post edited 17 Aug 17:18]

I am hoping 4 but hopefully 3 minimum, it will be tough to get rid of some without taking a pretty big hit. Need to get busy on the outs.

The signings are obviously exciting but there's something unpalatable that it's nownfelt that you've got to replace almost an entire side if promoted to have a chance. Furlong, Azor, Tayls all did really well for us last season. Hope they all play a role.

Ultimately we won't really know for sure until a few months down the line. It's extremely promising for sure.

Sell Hirst, loan Akpom. Sign at least one more striker. A big physical centre back with years of top flight experience is also key.

We basically did that two years ago, but failed to do it properly. I'm feeling a little better about things this time around. Plus I feel we didn't really meet expectations, despite going up, last season so am less attached to those who won promotion. We need to upgrade and it feels like we're doing it sensibly this time around.

For all this talk of signing an established CF it's really hard to see where he'll come from, which is why I'd expect a loan towards the end of the window. Hope I'm wrong about that mind.

I have no idea why people keep putting Hirst in their permutations, he's going, its obvious, I think Al-Hamadi, Humphreys, Palmer, Ogbene and Johnson will go too, I still think Philogene leaves and maybe Jack Taylor. I don't see Mehmeti, Nunez and McAteer going anywhere, GON seems to like them all.

Sounds like the Hirst & Johnson moves are happening. I've not made any room for Humphreys, Ogbene or Al-Hamadi who will all depart one way or another. Mehmeti & Taylor the most likely departures next (aside from keeper movement) I would think. 2 - 4 still to come in IMO.

Striker, Midfielder and defender to come and all better than we have now a minimum. You always have to wait for the best.

I don’t think you do. I sense in some there is an element of justification of negativity and hatred of last season’s players by wanting them all replaced. Matusiwa and Furlong can play that level as can some of the others. The players that replaced the first promotion team were markedly better footballers. That it took them time to come together was entirely natural. The defence was significantly stronger last year, Matusiwa was an upgrade on ageing Morsy and the left side with JD and Clarke was outstanding and those two’s contribution from out wide ridiculously good. Even the right side got stronger as McAteer settled but I can see why we’ve added the Leicester chap. It was the advanced midfield and centre of the attack that struggled a little (relatively- we got promoted believe it or not). Clearly we needed stronger players in key areas and depth but McKenna was right - we started with stronger base, though others might know better. I think the signings we’ve made look to have done that, though another forward now Hirst is going is needed. I’d be tempted to see to that and hold fire until January on anything else. This mud at a wall approach has its limits, in my view. Of the players still to move out, I’d let Philogene go if he wants to leave providing we make a healthy profit and possibly Taylor. Great character and battling, but I don’t think he’s good enough. Just how I see it.
