Leverkusen turn down second Ipswich offer for Exequiel Palacios
Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly rejected a second bid from Ipswich Town for Exequiel Palacios.
Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday morning that Ipswich Town were optimistic about completing a deal for Exequiel Palacios after submitting a second bid for the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder.
However, German outlet Kicker has since reported that the Premier League club’s second offer has been rejected by Die Werkself.
The bid, understood to be only marginally higher than their initial €20 million offer, didn't meet Leverkusen’s valuation of the midfielder.
Ipswich will therefore have to return with a higher third bid if they are to get a deal over the line for Palacios, who is reportedly keen on a move to the Premier League.

If we bid, and I reckon we did/will, cant see it being only marginally higher thats madness. If they wanted double you at least go somewhere need the middle like €28M euros.

Why aren't bigger PL clubs offering more than 20 million for a World Cup winner ?
If he's that good.... why aren't other PL clubs offering the 35 million that Leverkauzen want? What's the catch?
We unbelievahly managed to get Phillips on loan from Man City for a season two years ago. Incredible. Then we found out he was injury-plagued and wasn't very good. That's why we were able to get him.
Palacios' quality can't be doubted. But why would he choose to come here. There must be interest from elsewhere and, if not, why? | | | |

I enjoy the drip of news, rumour and gossip, and it's all very exciting when it's the potential acquisition of a player with serious pedigree.
But we shouldn't read too much into the minutiae of individual offers, rejections, and counter-offers, especially when it's all a game of Chinese whispers through the established and less established media.
Supposing there was a second bid, and a rejection of it (perfectly plausible), that doesn't tell us anything about how the negotiation will likely conclude. Doesn't mean Ashton's doing it wrong, doesn't mean we don't have enough money and should walk away. There may have been an indication from the horse's mouth as to what figure they (/say/ that they) would accept, and that figure may or not have stayed resolute, or inched closer to our figure. There may even have been a counter-offer. We also don't know how quickly after the rejection of the first bid the second was made.
If there was no hope of the player being interested, we wouldn't be pursuing this. Equally, if there were no hope of being able to afford a realistic compromise transfer fee, we wouldn't be pursuing this. None of that means we'll get our man, but we shouldn't speculate on how this ends up, based on simplistic reports of bids and rejections. The negotiations may be very cordial, and both sides may well both know that a figure will be agreed.
No criticism of the OP, naturally, and I always like to hear this sort of gossip, so cheers!
Of course, there is the possibility that we agree a figure and then a bigger club comes and swoops for the same price. Probably Villa, having already secured some kind of option to do so, knowing our luck... |  | | |

That's exactly the question I asked a few days ago .
Also this player is a world cup level player, so maybe our offers are too low ? We've offered more for players with lesser quality /experience , so maybe we need to be a bit more realistic in our offers. If our offers are as low as some reports, could it not almost be viewed as a bit of an insult to his current club? |  |

Well he seems to only want the PL so a limited pool of clubs. Possible reasons:
Question marks over his injury record? Them not thinking he is worth £100k a week of their budget? Them not wanting to be a stepping stone to a big 6 club next season if he proves himself? Them being well stocked in CM? [Post edited 18 Aug 14:13]

Yep, weirdly enough, wages can indeed be a factor for some perceived bigger clubs or established clubs, as they will have some many more earning 6 figures a week and a much higher cost base.
Or at least not many players earning the lower end of promoted squads. Of course this excludes the mega contracts at the top end. [Post edited 18 Aug 14:38]

Maybe he's not better than most of the clubs have already got? It seems to me that while he would/should be a massive upgrade for us, actually in the Prem is he going to be a player other clubs wished they'd got? Probably not. At this point we can't worry about being the best we just need to be able to hold our own and be better than 3 other teams. Fitness permitting (and his appearances each season are pretty good really) he would be a big uplift on what we already have. |  |
