How did he compare to Diop yesterday? From the highlights Diop looked careless at times.

I don't like the idea of Dara playing RB, he's a CB, simple as that. I'd rather play Furlong at RB than Dara long term.

He didn’t out a foot wrong all game, very calm, missed nothing,

yesterday he was the better of the two.... Diop wasn't at his best, wasnt awful but definitely far more to come

Immense although his performance was probably enhanced in my head because my eyesight isn’t brilliant, Lukic look almost identical to him (to me anyway) and so I think I was giving him credit for what both he and Sasa were doing for most of the game.

I thought Greaves absolutely ran the midfield first half...

...until I realised that was Sasa Lukic!

Better go to Specsavers.

He struggled with Brobbey’s movement early on but soon got up to speed and played really well. Diop is an imposing beast but was at fault for the goal and for Brobbey’s big chance in the second half, but the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.

Thought DOS got better as the game went on, but definitely got exposed in the first half.

Both played well yesterday. I’m a big Greaves fan and he didn’t put a foot wrong but he’s not as quick as Diop. It’s not a problem if Leif plays as a more conventional left back as he did yesterday but if he flys forward as per previous seasons Greaves will get caught out against the extra pace of the premier league

Greaves was excellent. He and Davis were pretty much faultless throughout.

Diop. Enormous bloke. Didn’t think I’d see Brobbey bounce off anyone like a tennis ball, but he did when they rumbled into each other. Diop has good positional sense is excellent in the air (no surprise) and is very no nonsense. Row Z will do when occasion demands it.

I thought the penalty was unnecessary and that wasn’t the only mistake he made. But overall, he’s promising. You can see the experience and in the Premier League you have to have players with size. He’s certainly got that.

Dara at fullback? I was in a minority of one with my seat chums - they think he’s fine there but to me he’s not really a full back. I hope I’m wrong. He did absolutely fine though. Had a good game and led the side beautifully. He’s a terrific footballer.

Had a good game, he would have made 1 or 2 mistakes (like all humans) if you analyse every second of the game, which I'm sure GON does.

But the key Sunderland danger moments from Town mistakes were Diop's not Greaves. Diop gave the freekick away for the goal, when there was no need to give a freekick away, and lost the player he was marking which gave the forward a free header but fortunately Scherpen saved.

Town fans (I'm sure all are) typically give a new player who has cost money a free hit, but after one season, no free hits. Greaves is in that situation, made mistakes in early games.. well he will settle.. after a year if he makes a mistake.. we have to buy a new LCB. You wait, first mistake that Greaves makes they will flood out of the woodwork demanding we buy a replacement. Some fans think you can buy players who never make a mistake, even though after over 100 years of football there has never been a player who doesn't make mistakes.

My only issue with Greaves, and maybe its just me, is that he and Lukic look the same. Similar build, hairstyle and even their running style seems similar. More than once yesterday I thought great tackle Greaves or Lukic and suddenly realised it was the other one.

I expected us to be a little vulnerable down our left side yesterday, but both Greaves & Leif Davis were excellent. I was far more concerned by a couple of rash challenges by Diop & Dara getting skinned for pace when he pushed up on the right side.

Dara at RB has 2 advantages

One, gives the keeper a solid out ball / throw when playing long(ish). Think once he got his range he connected with the majority of balls played out there

Two, adds a level of solidity at the back as we switch from 4 to a 3, as it was Lukic / Nunez stepped back at times to sit with Greaves and Diop.

I would also think its to give a bit more solidity behind the more aggressive / front footed Fatawa - although he did his fair share of tracking back

Will be interesting to see how we set up in away matches against stronger teams, I suspect we will be trying something different

Glad it's not just me, then! I didn't see a penalty while at PR, nor on MOTD later. You'd have thought they might have mentioned it!

It's probably swings and roundabouts depending on the opposition and their particular attacking players but Greaves looked the strongest link in the "back 3" yesterday whereas in the pre-season games he at times looked the weakest

But it's a team game with Davis and Nunez coming to the rescue at times, and overall we defended fairly well especially in the second half, with Sunderland limited to 0.76 expected goals.

I would much prefer us to get a proper PL RB (if Furlong isn't that) and have O'Shea centrally. Him at RB and Diop-Greaves combo does not feel optimal to me. Especially with a lot better teams to play than Sunderland.

I think the issue is that Diop and O'Shea can only play on the right, and you have to fit both in the team.

It's a back three at times to enable Davis to advance, and I can see us properly playing a back five for some games.

Best defender on pitch for me, although Leif was great defensively too.

Lukic has the bandage on his hand. Greaves doesn't. That's what I checked each time!

Excellent in the 2nd half in particular.

Greaves on 19:22 - Aug 23 with 1037 views_CliveBaker_

Very good performance from him yesterday. He’s certainly capable of that, just needs to cut the mistakes out that we’ve seen in the past. Diop looked a little rusty to me, I think he’ll improve as the season goes on. Davis was superb and 2nd half I thought O’Shea was too.

I think both sides will feel like they’ve got another gear to find, but a very good start from us. Still 2 or 3 short for me, an 8 & 9 and perhaps a defensive addition, but really promising signs.

Who was it that Dara O Shea collided with when attempting to win a header just outside the Sunderland box in the first five minutes or so? It was from our free kick, the ball fell to a Sunderland player and a couple of seconds later Davis was making a last ditch block of Brobbey's shot.

That was Greaves I think, and that was about the only mistake he made. It could have been Sasa Lukic though because it took me a while to spot the difference.
