| So what is GON’s plan for Old Trafford?? 20:31 - Aug 23 with 3722 views | unstableblue | Just a great result yesterday and in many aspects a great performance. Sunderland errors gave us opportunities and we were ruthless. We weathered Sunderland’s attacks pretty well, and their physical striker. When the Black Cats clicked into rhythm we allowed them to play in non dangerous areas. And our pressing trap was sprung a number of times. The energy of our front 4 was a difference maker, a lot of tenacity and aggression especially from Maeda and Fatawu. Now we head to Old Traffford, and we are likely to meet a backlash I’m afraid, following their humiliation at Hull. Press are calling out a lack of fight and desire and passion from the United players - with Carrick getting tetchy about those accusations. This will be turned into a motivation - and the home fans will try and get them going early. We’ve got to weather the storm but also put doubt in the home fans and players with some threat. So balancing going deep to frustrate, but also going forward at pace with numbers. What was very encouraging about the Sunderland home game is how many players we were getting in the box when we did go at them. We won’t be that front foot forward away at United. I assume Florentino will be fit. And I wonder if we’ll see the much vaunted - yet not seen - 5 at the back? With Ouatarra and Davis as wing backs. And Fatawu and Enciso behind Emersonn. **** Sit deep, soak it up, break at pace with intent *** Or do we stick at 4-2-3-1 and take the game to them a little. Hull were 5-4-1. Man U in a 4-2-3-1 as follows: Lammens Mazraoiu Maguire Heaven Shaw Tielemans Santos Mbeumo Fernandes Dorgu Cunha What do you think will be Towns approach? [Post edited 23 Aug 20:48]

In midfield especially though Baleba has signed now and will likely be involved next week. But a back 4 of Shaw Maguire Heaven and Mazrouai is very very vulnerable, especially to pace, which we have a lot of. I fancy us to cause them some problems when we go forward. It didn't click yesterday but they do have a plethora of good attackers who can cause anyone problems though. Should be a good game.

The BBC is reporting Baleba has a knee injury so may not be involved next week. Martinez and Rashford may start, though. I wonder if we'll go for a back three? The only question in that scenario is whether we'd play Fatawu at RWB or bring in Ouattara or maybe McAteer.

Didn't know that. Good news if so. If it is Martinez (who I rate btw) You would fancy playing direct to Emersonn and try and utilise his size. I suspect we might stay 4231 Florentino coming for Nunez. Not based on Nunez yesterday as he was great just to protect us a bit more away from home. Keep that front 4 the same and we can do some damage on the counter. I have been crying out for pace for years and we have it in abundance now.

We’ve built a team full of pace and athleticism, designed to sting teams on the counter attack. They’ll come at us all guns blazing because they have to, which means there will be spaces we can exploit. Really looking forward to it!

United are getting an absolute rinsing in the press, deservedly so, because as you say they were really poor at Hull. And their manager is under some early pressure. Of course the players and manager are going to react on Sunday, big point to prove. Lose or draw to lowly Ipswich will be deemed unacceptable. We’ll get a backlash. But as stated if we can ride it out and get into them, we could turn the crowd and sour the mood further. Threat and an opportunity. But if you think they’re going to play like they did at Hull, no chance.

Be very surprised if GON didn't adopt it. Outtara in for Fatawu and dropping to RWB would be my guess. Maeda and Enciso two 10s behind Emersonn.

I’m not sure Maguire and Shaw would be first choice picks ahead of our defenders currently, our pace and movement could really unsettle them.

“It will be a little while before United fans get to see Baleba in action, however, with the player currently nursing an ankle ligament injury sustained during Brighton’s pre-season friendly win over Strasbourg earlier this month.” Am sure Florentino will come in if fit, which will make us solid and energetic in the middle. I do think there’s a chance we go 3 at back with Ouatarra and Davis as wing backs. With Fatawu and Enciso behind Emersonn, Maeda dropping out.

Yeah can see Ouatarra coming in as you say. But given Fatawu showed he can press and bring some of his flair, wonder if he gets shout over Maeda?

| So what is GON’s plan for Old Trafford?? on 22:27 - Aug 23 with 2046 views | Garv | That was one of the most blood boiling games of last time having gone 1-0 up, 2-1 up and then having a man advantage. We conceded three sets pieces and had so much of the ball second half and did nothing with it. So we've got to make up for that. Incredibly confident after yesterday's results. Plus, O'Neill's last game there (I think) was this which for some reason has always stuck in the mind. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/fo I remember Wolves being brilliant that night at a time they had a fair bit of uncertainty transfer wise and they were being heavily tipped for relegation, think O'Neil was new into the job. I love the idea of Maeda, Enciso and Emersson running at their backline and the Stretford end having absolute kittens and getting on their backs. | |

The good news is.....we are not solely reliant on him. Fatawu looks like he can create, as does Maeda....we have options......

Would love to see it. For me, I think Maeda has the edge for the starting line up - I think we need to still have his insane pressing and hard work. Fatawu coming on against a tiring defence sounds unreal, especially as he is more clinical than Maeda. Depends whether the likes of Enciso will also be subbed off. Fatawu and Clarke/Philogene is exciting against a tiring defence, but maybe a little lightweight. Perhaps too much flair.. If that's the plan, then yeah I'd start Fatawu and bring on Maeda, but acknowledge that creativity might suffer unless Nunez is on. On a side note, I think Nunez had a cracking game. Fair play to him, buzzing to see him make the step up. Worked hard! Exciting times!! I can't believe we are having conversations like these!!

I would suggest we could become a bit reliant on him based on yesterday, but that might be simply because of how good he was. He's so good because he can shift with and without the ball, but also put his foot on the ball and play it simply and slow it down if needed. I could see Mehmeti playing that sort of role actually, albeit clearly not to the same level, over someone like Walle. I would be worrying if he got any sort of long term injury. Fatawu looks really exciting but I think he could be a bit chaotic at times, almost all or nothing. Realise you're not suggesting Maeda and Fatawu would necessarily play the same position.

| So what is GON’s plan for Old Trafford?? on 23:01 - Aug 23 with 1808 views | Guthrum | There might be more of the high press/defending from the front which we saw yesterday. The team were also good at dropping back quickly into a defensive structure. I noticed that up the pitch we tended to harry and attempt tackles, whereas in our own third, we stood off more, keeping structure, shielding the goal and blocking avenues through. The only thing about playing five at the back is that does mean sacrificing an attcker - and if so, who and in what position? The obvious one to go would be the no. 10 and therefore Enciso. But he was our most creative player and key to the most successful attacks. | |

The top clubs don't get the 'luxury' of organising preseason around fitness and conditioning. Instead, they travel the world to meet commitments to sponsors, and get dragged into spurious 'cups' and 'competitions'. Somehow, Ars3n4l managed to overcome those issues, but there's little evidence that others have managed it. Spurs, for example, went to NZ & Oz. First game was within 24 hours of landing in NZ. I doubt I'd have been in a fit state to down a few beers by then, let alone play a game. They played 3 games in a week and came back. Fitness & conditioning zilch. [They have many other problems, obvs]. Maybe early on is a good time to play the top teams. We are about to find out!!!
