While we are taking tactics on newly promoted clubs.

They are in a narrow 5-4-1, as clear as a system you will see without the ball. A lot less open space in the middle of the pitch than our games. It’s a true flat back 5 as well, the 3 CBs are than close together are going to win a lot of balls that come their way.

I just don’t see what they are going to do when they concede first goal at this level though lol.

Villa still look quite threatening.

We could learn from what I have seen so far. Holding shape well, not getting turned, not pushing up to far and leaving space behind. Villa have had one or two mini openings but not created anything clear cut really.

The keeper and Mendy at LCB look extremely good signings.

Villa better win this, they’re getting rather annoying lol

You’ve described their tactics but to suggest you have to be 5 leagues apart to play it is false. Teams do that at all levels against superior opposition.
[Post edited 5 Sep 18:32]

Indeed. Away against a man city id expect it

At home against a side who havent scored yet not so much.

Even as we say this. The 5 at the back isnt even working. Villa just simply cant put the ball away despite many many chances.

United had 21 shots v hull. 1.8 xg. They just didnt put them away. Hull were incredibly lucky.

Incredibly lucky? They scored two and restricted Man U to 1.8 xG. Their xG was 1.2 themselves. It was an even game chances-wise. They did this while not being a very talented squad.

The point is, they made it hard for them and made Man U work for any chances they got. Unlike us, who just gifted them chance after chance and allowed them to have their 4th-highest xG in 14 years.

Tactically, Hull have been much better than we have so far. Still think we will finish above them by the end of the season.

Which is fine if hull get a goal themselves

Personally i dont want to see us playing every game like we are a non league side v league side in the fa cup.

That’s not what they are doing. They are playing to the strengths of their players and that’s how you get points.

Hull have John Egan and Semi Ajayi in defence, 2 fairly limited players so they don’t ask them to do anything they can’t. It’s exactly what we need to do with Jacob Greaves, he has qualities so play to them and stop asking him and Diop to allow space in behind.

Unlike us who took the lead. Almost doubled it. And a slip let them in

We know what went wrong 2nd half

But this love of hulls tactics is bizarre. Villa should be 4/5 ahead despite this amazing tactics people want us to use.

And id applaud it if i saw it working a treat. But its villa themselves who arent winning this game not because Hull have cracked it.

It’s effective though. It works for them. I don’t think our defence could do this. We just aren’t resilient enough. We may have a better attack but if our defence isn’t up to it we are only heading one way Im afraid.

I dont believe so. I shared my views on friday.

Just dont get why some like yourself felt liverpool were there for the taking because of their start

Yet hull should be applauded for going defensive against a side who havent scored a goal. And a 0-0 is a great result.

We were hammered and looked amateurish against United, as we were so open. What went wrong in the second half was our tactics. Even in the first half, it was clear United would improve and come at us in the second half. Anyone with any common sense could see it coming (which does seem to be a small percentage of people on here).

Of course, Villa are creating chances. Hull's squad is awful. It's to be expected. Hull are creating chances themselves.

I don't see people wanting to use the same tactics as Hull, but it would be nice to make it harder for teams.

They’re playing to their strengths and making it an extremely hard lock to unpick, at times our high line defense has looked like food.

So hard to unpick, based on xG Villa should have scored more goals this evening than Liverpool yesterday.

I'm amazed the difference between xG and reality has managed to last as long as he has for them, as it was the same for them in the Championship. Sunderland were successful with it too - their results overall were excellent but, based on xG, they were lucky to survive.

I do agree, being more solid should help us, but it isn't the be all and end all. And sometimes factors outside tactics have a part to play.

Indeed hopefully Villa nick this but from what I f seen so far Hull are going to be extremely hard to beat this season.

Their coach deserves a lot of credit.

Some people just aren't happy unless they're being negative about ITFC. Many of those who had it in for McKenna at various points are the same ones doing the same thing now.

There aren't really enough data points to judge yet that Coventry and Hull are doing it right and we're doing it wrong. We were outclassed last night, for sure. At Old Trafford the Nunez slip totally changed the game, not to mention the dodgy decision and the soft pen that followed it.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Come on, man. Liverpool's xG was low as they killed the game off after ten minutes. The game was over, and they coasted. Do you really think that if those chances didn't go in and it was still 0-0, they wouldn't have created loads more chances?
