Royal William and Ipswich Arms both went in 1999. I remember that well as I bought my first house in Chevallier Street round about the same time. Ipswich Arms was an Ind Coope pub from memory.
The Spotted Cow was round the corner from me but I don't think that lasted much longer either. There's a Farm Foods there now.
As for Town Centre, somebody mentioned the Cock and Pye and the bar the other side to what it is now. That all changed around 1997.
Some good nights in town years ago, the Swan-albeit with its sticky carpet and rank toilet- was a regular haunt for me along with Mannings, Spread Eagle (the only pub in Ipswich I know of where the bar runs along the side of the road) and Earl Roberts (General Gordon) which was closed due to water damage late 90s. Val who was landlady at the Earl went on to run the Steamboat.
And pre Isaac days, who used to drink in the Malt Kiln? |

So easy to forget these old names/haunts.
How about the Lord Nelson when it had what seemed to me a very small public bar (that still had a pool table I think!)?

Ah, this is a shame
I'm in my early 40s and the Swan was fantastic in the late 00s/early10s. Had one hell of an alternative scene and Swanfest each year was an absolute delight. Some genuinely half decent bands would come and play there, well before the Brighten the Corners festival brought good music back to the town again |  | | |

I suppose you could say it was a bundle, with nothing like the sort of violence that one might have seen in larger cities.

It was in the Gunners on Blackstock Road when it was run by Town fan Rob (pretty sure that was his name?). Blackiej/Buestar. Didn't actually say hello cos 'Tom Hall From TWTD' (for it was him) marched in proclaiming loudly who he was and he seemed a bit of nobber (I'm sure he's actually a lovely bloke) so me and my mate remained incognito. Laughed about it on here with Bluestar at the time, ho ho ho.

Yes, that was Rob the massive Town fan who was the landlord of the Gunners Pub next to the old Arsenal Highbury stadium. I'm sure I only went in there once when he was the landlord mid 90s and remember he came out in his half and half shirt because the doorman would not allow us Town fans in. A minute later we were at the bar with a drink from Rob!
previously he was landlord of the small pub off Wherstead Rd towards Maidenhall estate and the one and only time I recollect going in there I ended up on a train the next morning to Preston for an early round FA cup game with him. No cell phones back then so my wife was not best pleased when she found out! |  | | |

There were a few rough pubs in Ipswich in the Seventies, sometimes you were clocked because you came from the other side of town and weren't supposed to be in such and such a pub e.g. The Kingfisher in Chantry. And there was a pub near Stoke Park called 'The Defiance' that had a murder in it. |  |

Back in 2001, as a 17 year old, I met a friend in the Swan for a drink, took a bit of a shine to the barman. Married him in 2006 and we've just had our 20th wedding anniversary. The Swan holds a lot of happy memories for me from the early 2000s. It was always full back then, no matter what time of the day or what day of the week it was. |

The Blue Coat Boy deserved to be demolished, although if it had happened earlier then that wretched crowd might have found a more sustainable pub to infest. The sad truth is a lot of them probably left this Earth in the years leading up to its demise.

well youve got to ask who though ? aiui the pub was on a freehold lease till 2034, and so the current leaseholders have decided even on a freehold, not on tenancy with a pubco/brewery screwing them over, the numbers just dont work for them anymore.
and if it doesnt work for them, why would it be different for anyone else ?
but I havent been to the Swan & Hedgehog for nearly 2 years now, and only once to the Spread Eagle, why mention the Spread Eagle well that lease is up for sale too btw

A bit further out, the Grundisburgh Dog has closed as well, looks like the manager who had the lease was running some very interesting financial arrangements, as it is has been historically a profitable establishment - probably much more difficult to make money in today's climate though.. |  |
