Last time I was in The Swan, admittedly some years ago, it must have taken me 5 minutes to walk from the front door to the bar - every step required strenuous effort to unstick each foot from the carpet.

I was forced to leave a brothel creeper in there once and had to hop all the way to the brothel.

Was shagged out before I even got there.

(Had to go hungry for the rest of the week.)

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

My favourite pub from when I was a teenager through to being an adult was the Fleece at Mendlesham.
As a kid you could go around the back into the off licence and get some lemonade and then sit with your mates under cover although open one side under a lean to with benches and a table and sort out football cards and match boxes which we collected and were truly fantastic.
When of drinking age I would go in with my mates for a few beers and have a game of darts. Sometimes sit in the fireplace as it was an inglenook with seats either side of a roaring fire in the winter.
It amazes me that the Kings Head, which in my opinion was a far inferior pub remains open and the fleece was converted to residential in 2014.

Was it also called The Toad and Raspberry at some point?
Also used to frequent The Crown and Anchor and Ths Great White Horse, amongst others.

Yep, Craftsman, Toad & Raspberry, Raps, Black Adder, Bar IV, Thomas Wolsey. The bar used to be on the right hand side when it was the Toad.

must have been a different pub, as Id go so far as to say even in the 90s, the area from the front door to the bar was never carpeted, and it certainly isnt now or has been for years. the little section beyond the bar with the pool table/jukebox and corridor to the toilets used to be carpet, but not the bar.

The saloon bar in The Swan was carpeted in the Seventies and Eighties but it was pretty threadbare when I first went in there in autumn 1971 and I think it was still the same carpet in the early Eighties, perhaps it was only the spilt beer that was holding it together ?

Last went in The Swan ten years ago and it had been completely 'madeover', it was as if some evil decorator had decided that pubs have souls and they must be exorcised.

On a swapped bar side theme, I remember the cock and pye when the bar was the other side, and the walls (inexplicably) covered in fishing nets.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Interesting I never saw those (but i never went in there much.) Still a bit lightweight compared to the dentist's chair hanging from the ceiling of The Canny Man's on Morningside in Edinburgh.

Ah the Canny Man's! My local for a year when I was 19. Also fondly remember Bennetts Bar. We're obviously of the same vintage as your earlier post mentioned the Swan, Vaults and Crown and Anchor route. I had my first legal pint in the Swan in on my 18th in 1975

That was when Aidy ran it, he knew how to run a pub.

Always been a good boozer, even when it's been a sh1t one, if you know what I mean. An institution.

What a shame it would be. As you wrote elsewhere, people need to use the town centre more. Even on match days it's pretty dead bar people actually in the pubs (not all).

The brevity of the title puts me in mind of the scene in the Tube station in Battle of Britain, where the starey-eyed old fella comes along in shock, and says "They've got the King's Head", as if Hitler himself had specifically targeted that establishment.

Our attachment to pubs, and our comfort in the form in which we're used to them is quite a powerful thing, n'est ce-pas?

I feel a touch of sadness when I hear about any pub closing, and when it's ones I knew or still use it elicits very strong emotions of not just sadness but anger. They are fundamental to our society and culture.

I had a beer with Burer in there too.

Back in the days where had a few forum meet ups.

It was in the Gunners on Blackstock Road when it was run by Town fan Rob (pretty sure that was his name?). Blackiej/Buestar. Didn't actually say hello cos 'Tom Hall From TWTD' (for it was him) marched in proclaiming loudly who he was and he seemed a bit of nobber (I'm sure he's actually a lovely bloke) so me and my mate remained incognito. Laughed about it on here with Bluestar at the time, ho ho ho.

Oh, I met Deepblue at Liverpool Street to sell him a train ticket, which seems incredibly random and studenty to me now.

Can imagine. Brilliant building.

People need to get into the town centre more. There's great stuff here.

At Β£6/7 a pint I can see why people dont visit pubs more often though.

I walked into a pub in London early in the summer, Β£7.90 for a pint. I looked at the lady, said sorry, but had to walk away. Insane price

Out of interest, does this stop you having a pint or two at London away games, or do you drive to save money?
