Feels it. To be fair to them, as it stands right now they’ve lost 3/3 but 2 of them were Arsenal & Man City away which really won’t matter if they beat bottom half sides. The Hull one was clearly disappointing. Last time we were here it was games like Brighton at home that were more sobering than the bigger margin defeats. That 0-2 under the lights at PR and they didn’t seem to break much of a sweat. They’re the ones where you think ‘crikey, Man City away fair enough, but we’re a million miles away from even Brighton’.

To be fair it would be a miraculous escape if they went into the international break on 0 pts.
no newly promoted side that failed to earn a single point from their opening five matches has ever managed to stay up at the end of the season. A slow start of zero points after five games correlates with a 100% relegation rate.
Also 22 of the 25 promoted sides getting 3 points or less after five game have gone down
There is a huge correlation between a good start and survival for promoted teams
That shows us that last time when we had achieved 5 draws in first 10 games and thought we were doing ok. We were in fact pretty much doomed and it was an indicator of how the rest of the season would progress

A newly promoted team with 0 points after 5 games. Would have played 2 ‘top 6’ sides, 2 likely to be mid table, and another promoted side. It suggests they won’t have the quality needed to acquire the points needed to survive. With recently promoted teams, in recent history, I think having a good start is really important. It’s only a perspective, I’m not sure it’s quite as outrageous an opinion to warrant a ‘wow’. | | | |

The stats say otherwise. A promoted side that has 6 points after 5 games has just a 28% chance of staying up. Of course it's possible for them to go against this, but it will be bloody tough. [Post edited 13 Sep 14:57]

Got to grudgingly admire their fans still at the ground today. 0-5 at ft, and they've stayed on to applaud & chant their continuing support for their team for 5+ minutes.

They only need a few wins in a row and they'll be up the table. You can't write rhrm off after 4 games.

I think it might be a mistake for a promoted team to start slow and think things will improve as they gel, get up to speed, get used to the Prem, etc. It seems to me that it often works the other way - or not at all! ie, promoted team starts well, catches a few teams out, gets points on the board and the either clings on for the rest of the season or starts well and keeps going (like us in 2000 & S'land last year.).

A few have but it’s remarkable how far the historical stats shift against you
I suppose most promoted teams come up with momentum and togetherness. They have a team without injuries. As injuries hit their replacements lower the team quality a lot. And if you rack up losses and near missies it takes a lot of resilience to keep picking up points.
Maybe why early points make such a difference.
Also the first 5 games might look hard on paper but really they are representative of most 5 game sequences at any point in the season. If you are way off the pace, it unlikely to have something amazing happen to change that.
It’s why I’m a bit against the concept of playing ok / looking ok against top six sides and being happy with that. Or treating them as a free hit. You have to be as hard to beat as possible and scape points whenever there is a sniff and in whatever way you can. Who knows what can happen if you can get deep into games in contention.
The record is different for established sides, with a number more cases of teams having very bad starts and turning it around. | | | |

Pre-Premier League but Sheffield United in 1990/91 had 4 points on the board at kick-off with their match against Nottingham Forest on 22 December 1990. They won that match and that kick-started them taking 42 points out of a possible 63 through to the end of the season, which was also played over 38 games.

Today could be the day where they finally realise just how big the gap is.
Arsenal and Man City away are not where you make your mind up as you basically know you'll be losing them. They could argue that Hull was a bad day at the office.
However, today was a game against that 'next group' of teams - the likes of Brighton, Brentford, Bournemouth - a game you might think you can get something. They did, they got absolutely schooled. The game was done before the red card was issued.
It's going to be a very, very long season for Coventry. As it will for Hull and ourselves, but we've at least got a positive foundation to build on after 4 games. | | | |

Much too early to be writing off a team. Coventry have some good attacking qualities. Even if they go into the break with 0 points, it only takes a couple of wins to gain back some confidence. Equally, we could go on a 5-game losing streak and lose all our confidence. The statistics are fairly meaningless at this stage, and this season has an air of unpredictability about it. Let's see where everyone is by the end of the year. |  | | |
