Why are there so many "religious" players now? on 19:47 - Sep 13 by Radlett_blue
Terry Butcher was playing one of his first games for Town. Allan Hunter noticed butcher crossing himself before the game. After the game, Hunter said to Butcher "Are you Catholic"? Butcher said no, so Hunter said "In that case, I don't ever want to see you doing that again".
What a strange way to pick an argument with a teammate.
The practice pre-dates the Catholic church as an institution, and is also done by many Anglican clergy in Anglican services.
I can tolerate any mainstream religion. Those who seek to control the religious or even superstitious practices of others, not so much.

One thing I’ve noticed which i absolutely love is Daizen Maeda bowing very subtly and quickly towards the players out there when he leaves or enters the pitch during a substitution. Not religious (or actually is it originally ? ) but I’m really taken with it.

Was just a tongue-in-cheek way of saying that for a country with such a Christian history we’ve become a very secular society. To the point where even discussing your religion might be frowned upon.
My perspective: I have a religious background and upbringing and feel all the better for it.
Unfortunately a few religious people give the rest of us a bad name. There never needed to be a science vs religion battle. I waste too much time arguing with (mostly) American Christians about how there is nothing in the Bible saying the Earth is flat and all space exploration is fake.
Anyway. despite my generally pro religious stance I also agree that given religion is also ideology it should be open to challenge, criticism, even scorn and ridicule. Recent legislation introduced about this is a mistake (essentially modern blasphemy law).
But I still don’t like smug atheists and the idea that nobody should ever publicly display their faith.
I suppose one man's smug atheist could be another man's open-minded observer, frustrated and deeply saddened by the planetary-level consequences of actions driven by manipulative and dogma born of corrupted, once meaningful, philosophy?
Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

I am an Atheist, but I see no problem with anyone having religious beliefs and showing it. History has shown it's only a problem when it's used as a political tool for war mongering, terrorists and control of the masses.
History hasn't shown that at all. Certainly that has been a massive issue. But history also shows all sorts of religious dogma and bigotry damaging people's lives.

OP used the word 'nonsense'. It's reasonable therefore to say they are a devout atheist. You could even go further to say they are a proselytising atheist.
Most atheists of this sort are unaware that their mode of thinking is profoundly Abrahamic. Militant atheism is in fact a distant branch of the same theological tradition...
And this is because the religions of the near-east are innately DUALISTIC, in a way that Eastern and European pagan belief systems generally are not. Think of the most basic binaries: heaven/hell, good/evil, God/Satan.
There can only be one answer. And anyone who says otherwise is an idiot blasphemer.

There is no code. Everyone does it, simply because everyone else does it. Young kids playing football do it now. i asked my teenage grandson why he puts his arm up when he takes a corner and he didn't understand the question. He just thought you had to do it. Watch Declan Rice. He takes every free kick for Arsenal and his arm "signal" is the same every time. As is everyone else's who takes dead-ball kicks. Leif was (is) our corner taker for ages. His arm signal never changes.
I agree it probably started as a signal, but now?
I think you might be partly right here. Thinking back to when I played a (pretty low level) I used to take corners. I'd put my arm up - but there was never, ever any agreed code! Thinking about it I was probably just acknowledging 'Big Kev' who'd made his way up from the back and waved to me to kick it to him. But no one would ever have known that! Bit silly now looking back at it. I was actually just probably copying Arnie M!

No. Its a simple rejection of a proposition.
Wrong. It’s just another belief with the same validity as all beliefs.
In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Not sure you have worded it correctly, but I get what you mean. So many players play to the cameras these days. No harm in it, but the one finger on each hand to the sky gesture is a bit of a grind to constantly see. Punch the air, celebrate with your team mates and the crowd. Life was so much simpler when I was a kid. (that was a bl00dy long time ago)

Entirely wrong on two counts. Though let's be careful with the language to avoid confusion. The word atheist is sometimes used for someone who actively asserts that there are no gods / higher powers. Mostly, however and imo, it is used as a description for people who reject the religious propositions that have been made. The semantics dont matter so long as we are all talking about the same thing.
Arguably, a positive assertion that there are no gods etc could be considered a belief system.
The atheism most people are talking about in this thread and generally though, is not. It is the rejection of religous propositions. A- theism. Absence of theism (theism being belief in a conscious god).
To say that the beliefs are equally valid though, is absurd. The belief that a particular religion has not met its burden of proof is an entirely justifiable objective position. The belief that a man was born who is god, or part of god ,or related to god, who then sacrificed himself to himself to act as a loophole in the rules which he himself set, and achieve an eternal life which makes no sense, is clearly not (whatever you think of it) objectively justified. It requires "faith" in the "belief without evidence" sense.

I believe McDonalds is the food of gods. Do I do the 2 finger gesture thingy every time I order one? Asking as an old man who really doesn't get out much these days.

I occasionally go into a MuckyD's for a more affordable cup of tea or coffee but when it comes to the 'food' I give that the two fingered gesture...
Atheists really hate it when they’re correctly told their beliefs are no more or less valid than anyone else’s. Who can imagine why?

It's certainly interesting to observe the force which compels Atheists to constantly deny their beliefs. It seems quite powerful. I wonder what it could be?

Haven;t read this thread - just this page of you holding off the hoards of barbarians and heathen - keep up the good fight Chico. Has anyone mentioned the scientists who find faith through their research? In the absence of proof, of course atheism is just another belief!
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

Exactly! Everyone knows the world was invented 6 or 7 thousand years ago by God with a little help from Adam and Eve. Anyone who doesn't believe this is obviously an idiot..
