It’s a long way to go of course but it was slightly jarring that so many pundits lazily predicted us and Hull to go down and Coventry to stay up comfortably when we appointed a manager with two survivals and were signing some very good players. Hull also looked to be making some good signings. Coventry’s best side looked very much unchanged.
The Lampard factor is annoying to have to listen to. I know Cov have played the top three as it stands and played well at City, but they look very much like they have the potential to be us a few years back. Some decent performances and a bit of hope but ultimately out of our depth, albeit they are yet to get a point or even score.
Would be huge for us for one or two teams to have an utterly horrific start points return wise. They look likely to be one of those as it stands. [Post edited 13 Sep 15:17]

7 of their starters today are from last year’s Championship.
You can forgive the (Cov) fans optimistism, like us they’d been away best part of two decades and the PL is a whole different beast now. Even the likes of Brighton and Palace are beating big European sides such is the strength of the PL.
However the pundits should be more than aware the gulf between the PL and Champ, Cov’s struggles aren’t a surprise to us. I can only think as Badger always says it’s unconscious bias since many of the pundits know Lampard personally.
The Southampton squad which almost broke the record low points return was considerably stronger than this Cov team - going to be a long season for them. |
This was my problem with the predictions as well. Did the pundits not appreciate that, if anything, Coventry are even weaker than we were in 2024/25?
Even Hendrie just said in commentary he thought they would put up a fight. They do not have the quality, particularly in depth. Of course they'll pull of a surprise result or two, like we did, but not enough. | |

To be totally fair to them, I think their fans' views will have been similar to ours 2 years ago. Reality takes some time to hit home. They will have made comments about our transfer business as much in hope that it is poor as in any real belief it was. It will have been influenced by not knowing a lot about some of the players we signed. |  |

Why are so many of our fans feeling so injured about TV pundits having us pencilled in for relegation ahead of Coventry?
Low expectations of us from every one of our opponents is exactly what we want and is currently servicing us very well.
I won’t be laughing at Coventry if they end the season with 0 points and a goal difference of -100 if we finish 18th with 39 points. |  |

Not sure, actually. I had wondered this having read various things on the Coventry forum.
But they seem a lot, lot angrier than Town fans were early on. Granted, it's been a bad start, but two years ago ours wasn't bubbling from day one.
Maybe they believed the hype in the manager and from pundits, and refused to listen to cautionary words of advice from eg. Town fans who said the gap is large. Perhaps they are just an entitled bunch who don't like not being top of the tree.
