What the fair, sane, decent, and humane world is up against: 19:39 - Sep 14 with 5105 viewsZx1988

https://www.instagram.com/p/Dd

Sorry I can't find a link that'll embed here, but the Guardian also cover it here:

https://www.theguardian.com/mu

The gist of it is thus:

Macklemore was touring with Ed Sheeran, and spoke out at the Metlife stadium in support of Palestine. Since then, Ed has been forced (or chosen, depending on your stance) to remove him from the tour, after a number of US stadium owners refused to allow the tour to visit if Macklemore was on the bill.

Nothing hateful, nothing anti-semitic, just the mere act of saying 'Free Palestine' on a stage in front of 90,000 people.

Not a prophet, or a stone-age man; just a mortal with potential of a superman.

The same Macklemore who has flirted with antisemitism before?

https://s.abcnews.com/images/B

“Every Jew I know knew exactly what it was,” Pink wrote on Instagram. “But he apologized, and I let it go, because that’s what we do. We let it go. Then last weekend he stood in front of a stadium full of music-loving families, with violent images from a war on the screens, dedicated a song to the movement of his choice, and then took the mic to tell all of the Jews in the stadium that it wasn’t about them. You don’t get to decide that for us.”

“That’s what prompted my repost,” she continued. “Not ‘Free Palestine,’ and not anyone’s right to say it. I have never asked for another artist to be silenced and I’m not asking now. I don’t need anyone fired, and I don’t need a refund. What I need is to be able to say, as a Jewish mom, that scared me, and it scared people I love, without being told our fear is just propaganda, and without being told I’m somehow cool with genocide because I noticed?”

Here's the full transcript of what he said:

"I’ve been trying to figure out a way to say this all day. One of the reasons why I wanted to come on this tour was because I wanted to stand up here on stages and stadiums across America and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine.

I said, Free Palestine.

I want those words to be loud and clear, so the people from Gaza, all the way to the occupied West Bank, know that we have not forgotten them.

And this next song was inspired by the bravery of Columbia University students who led an encampment movement that mobilized the entire world; open up hearts, myself included, so thank you to those students that risked their diplomas, that risked their tuition, that risked their scholarships, that stood up and said, no. CUAD students, Students for Justice in Palestine, and Jewish Voices for Peace. Thank you, guys.

To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters: criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide in no way is a criticism of you. My message is for peace; love for all human beings to be treated with dignity, respect, and equality.

So I say Free Palestine, I say Free Lebanon, I say Free Cuba, I say Free Congo, Free Sudan, I say Free all people in America living in fear of this terrorist organization, ICE. None of us will be free until we are all free."

It seems completely different to what P!nk's statement suggests he was saying.

Given that the 'Jewface' incident was back in 2014, let's not dress this up as anything it isn't. He wasn't black-balled for any alleged anti-semitism; he was black-balled for speaking up in support of Palestine.

As as for Ed, refusing to take a position on a matter like this is very much taking a position.

And if this is truly about black-balling an anti-semite, rather than shutting down support for Palestine/criticism of Israel, answer me this:

How come many of the stadia that have banned Macklemore have had, or will have, no issue in hosting Kanye West since his own anti-semitic outbursts?

Exactly this, he never gets involved in all that and Macklemore even makes comment on Ed’s “typical apolitical stance” - maybe he should have thought about that before opening his mouth whilst warming up for Ed.

I found myself in two minds on this, but the more I think about it, the more I dislike Ed's position.

Although he's not publicly made any statement, his actions do that for him. He's been told that his tour won't be welcome in a number of US cities unless he de-platforms the chap criticising a genocide, and he's agreed to toss Macklemore to one side.

Even if he publicly states that he is apolitcial, agreeing to demands that he de-platform someone who has been critical of Israel is a political act in and of itself.

He's supposed to cancel loads of dates of his tour and let fans down? Macklemore chose to speak and is now the one to pay the price. There is zero reason for ES to be forced into basically endorsing what Macklemore said by cancelling tour dates.

Absolute BS

I know you lot need to make your entire identity about Palestine and tell people how much you want them to be free 47 times per day but other people have other things they care about. Some people don't base every decision they make on the latest pet cause.

"You lot".

"Pet cause".

I'm sure you could be more condescending if you tried but it would be difficult. Saying 73000 dead and 150000 injured in two years is a "pet cause" is awful and that's before you even look at the historical context.

Pretty horrible stuff just because you don't agree with them.

....and artist management are increasingly putting clauses into contracts that forbid political statements during their concerts.

Quite rightly too.

This character may well have broken that clause leading to his sacking.

Even if he didn't Ed can do whatever he thinks is best for his tour and his fans.

Frankly I doubt he needs all the associated grief this bloke will inevitably bring.

It's been a pet cause far longer than this situation has been going on.

Some people seem to base their entire life around it and are incredibly judgemental of anyone who doesn't base every decision around it.

I think it’s fair to ask whether “Free Palestine” is just a socially and politically acceptable way for Macklemore to express the same base prejudice as he did when dressing up like this.

Indeed - it’s his job. Pretty sure most people don’t bring politics into work. We know it’s genocide, so is Sudan, so is Yemen. The Chinese are trying to irradiate the Uighur culture, lock them up without trial, forcibly displace them - yet people are happy to drop 30k on a Chinese car.

Pretty poor this is being used to dig out Ed, from the some people that often talk about ‘weaponisation’.

Some of the responses to this thread are really depressing. I have no idea who Macklemore is, but he is using his platform for good, thousands of Palestinian people have been murdered in this ongoing genocide, yet we're defending the fact he's been booted from a tour because of what?

We're okay with genocide?

We can't go against Ed Sheeran?

People with a platform shouldn't speak their mind?

Disgusting.
