My eyes and ears feel, well - a bit violated, really.
Why does she have that random man (husband?) sort of float into the scene in the first video, and why is that young lady in the second video? This is my era, I think. I'm glad I avoided it the first time round. It's stunning....

I think the second clip is from Surprise Surprise...guess the young lady wrote into the show asking if Cilla could make her dreams come true by letting her watch her tw@tting a young lad in the eye for no reason while singing some soft rock

I am old enough to remember Surprise, Surprise, but my goodness not like that. I know Cilla was always angling to break out in song, but honestly - who sanctioned that as prime time TV-worthy?!

Loved an anthem did our Cilla
I love the speed and trickery of hand at 1.37 where she throws a punch, the next shot shows an upper cut to land, and the very next she’s turned her hand over again…

For me where Cilla has always struggled is where she needs/tries to put that power into her voice - it just seems to go all nasally and, well, wrong.
As for the song, well .....
Actually, I’ve always preferred Cillas’ over Dions’, but it may be the production. George Martin? Those backing singers entranced me as a kid! She got the break by being mates with The Beatles, so had The Team behind her. Beryl Marsden was Liverpool’s best female, did some great stuff with Rod in The Shotgun Express .

These are all appalling. But in the interests of fairness, her version of Anyone who had a heart is absolutely amazing
Love this from Lennon and McCartney.
Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

Yeah, to be honest, she had a great voice in the lower register, but (maybe because of technique or simply facial anatomy) she lost that quality in the higher register.
Cilla gets a lot of flack, and to be honest, those OP videos are the reason why, but she also got a lot of unfair criticism that she only made it because she was pals with The Beatles. The music business has almost always been more about who you know than what you know, it's not her fault that she knew the Fab 4, and she was a good singer, albeit not a virtuoso, but I guess the scrutiny was always going to be there.
But yeah - awful, nightmare-inducing version of The Voice there. <Shudder>

I remember my Dad sitting us down to watch this, which was a suprise in itself because he was not a fan of Cilla's programmes. The reason was the man was his friend Andy who was rewarded for his work on Harwich Redoubt by being Cilla's 'victim' on Suprise Suprise. My Dad watched open mouthed and later told me poor Andy who was a quiet man and just interested in the Redoubt, had to put on a brave face to get through it. Poor Andy! Check out James Hogg writer on Instagram he has some more clips of Cilla, including an extraordinary performance of She'll be coming round the mountain on a minature railway!

That lower register point, and my own comment about the rest of it, seems perfectly summed up by the following. Great start CB but .....
