Had to read Jane Austin for O levels at school. Might have been more receptive at an older age, but at that age it was dreadful and maybe contributed to why I failed English Lit

Interesting - as a mid-teen girl not into football, I loved it!

And loved ‘Lord of the Rings’ in my late 20s when in a v. stressful job - used to read a page every night in bed for sheer escapism.

Read it 20 odd years ago and still scared by it now. Is a masterclass in how to take any joy out of a subject.

After my dad died, I was driving up and down to N Wales to sort out his house and went through hte first two books on audiobook. It wasn't too bad that way (although i'm not fan of audiobooks, but that's a separate issue).

I quite enjoyed the first couple in the series, but it went downhill rapidly after that.

'Human Traces' by Sebastian Faulkes.

I liked Birdsong, although it's probably not quite as good as the hype but otherwise, Faulkes' fiction is either overblown and unrealistic (the last part of Charlotte Grey) or just dull - that book especially.

I mean this is how is website describes it:

Have you read Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman - he has been compared to Tolstoy and like you I struggled with War and Peace but found Life and Fate a much more intruiging read . . .

I've no idea why they made it into a movie. The sequel is just as weak, the whole franchise is overrated in my opinion.
