Mark Ashton said last year that an agreement with EE was close and WiFi would shortly be available at Portman Road.
Don't get me wrong I can live without using my phone for 90 mins, but it would be nice to check on the HT scores without having to rely on a flaky 4G/5G signal.

coverage is limited because you need more masts to deliver a signal across all the areas,but people dont like masts being built in north yorkshire, so what can you do ? where EE has signal its generally rated the best network

they already do that where they can, but you have to understand that a TV mast only has to cope with one way communication for tv signals, it broadcasts a signal out, it doesnt really care if you get it or not and your tv doesnt need to send stuff back to it.
a mobile phone network relies on two way communication, so even if they boosted the power of the mobile signal at the mast to match that of the tv signal and blanket an area with just 1 mast, your phone, your actual device thats critical to the two way communication part, cant, it generates a very weak signal in comparison, primarily for battery saving and concerns about overheating and things, it needs to be near a mast for it to work.
generally the rule of thumb is if you are over 10miles from a mobile phone mast, then you wont get a signal because your phone cant contact the network, even if the network can contact your phone, its why you often see your phone tell you its got good signal and yet nothing works.
but that fundamentally means you must then have more mobile phone mast density to create the network for all the handheld devices to be able to shout loud enough for a mobile mast to pick it up.
and certainly in rural areas, the locals object to that. | | | |

Radio signals don't tend to fare too well when they meet large steel structures. You're probably shielded from the mobile signal by the stand whilst in the stadium. |  | | |

Ah, thanks for the interesting info.
There are other masts (not TV) locally though, one’s only about 3 miles away & is used for all manner of digital tech, so don’t know why they don’t use that. Or maybe a hill gets in the way!
I don’t know anyone who’d object to a mast - everyone complains about the signal black spots, and phone masts are a helluva lot less intrusive than massive electricity pylons. | |

It will be 5G, as a public network, provided by EE. You won't have to be an EE customer to use it.

I can't access the internet via Vodafone at the ground but I get a full bars 4G signal. It's generally the limited backhaul capacity the mobile sites have that stops your phone connecting to the internet when there are so many users trying to access it. | | | |

Absolutely. When a punter says there's no "signal" or "reception" or whatever, it's not necessarily apparent to him or her whether it's a coverage or capacity issue. And in a place where there are tens of thousands of people, all of whom want to use data at the same time, it's overwhelmingly likely to be a capacity issue.
This is something that the club can do to really improve the matchday experience. Let's hope it can come to fruition at reasonable cost very soon. |  | | |

It's likely to be more nuanced than that.
A football stadium is a terrible place for a wireless signal - too much steel and dense material for a strong signal to travel. You also ideally don't want to be relying on local cellular towers for for backhaul, or you'll overwhelm them quickly.
The best solution is converged micro-cell architecture combining WiFi6/7 & 5G, localised network segmentation and a dedicated high capacity backhaul connection. No idea if the club intend to take this approach, but it's what you find more and more on high density venues. | | | |

When I arrive at the ground at midday for lunch on match day then I still struggle to receive any service despite receiving a signal. I suspect what you say is true to a degree but I believe the physical makeup of the stadium is also partly to blame.

The opposite is true for me. Get to the ground and connect with no problem. Get close to kick-off and then during the game and it becomes impossible. The same situation continues after the game as I walk back to the car until the numbers have thinned out - near Stoke Bridge - when internet connection is possible again. | | | |

Longtimefan is correct.
If you’ve got bars on your phone, that means that the phone has established a connection with the base station and the signal strength of the various training signals the base station sends are adequate.
If you are not getting data then either the network has no spare over-the-air capacity due to traffic congestion, or there is no backhaul capacity. I’d guess it is far more likely to be the former, but I know a lot more about that than I do about backhaul.
Anyway, phone networks are carefully managed so that they give a good quality of service under normal operating conditions. But when the number of devices in an area increase and when everyone uses them at the same time (checking the scores at 1/2 time) they get immediately swamped. | | | |
