| Israel v Ireland already going well then… on 21:20 - Sep 21 by J2BLUE | To say they are playing against genocide is up there with Paloma Faith's stupidity. Now people are apparently allowed to demand people answer political questions we're going to see more and more of this type of thing. |
His comments have to be viewed in the context of the intense public pressure surrounding these fixtures in Ireland, with protests and an open letter from over 160 Irish sports figures demanding a total boycott. He said that after speaking to his players individually, several were really uncomfortable about playing. Against that backdrop, a standard PR response like 'playing a team doesn't mean endorsing them' wouldn't have carried enough weight to help protect the squad from potential criticism. He used language to chime with those of the public who feel very strongly about this.

They're not playing against genocide - they're playing football against some other young men. However, I can see why the Irish coach is saying that, to protect his players against what seems to be some serious pressure building up over there directly on them as individuals to back out.

| Israel v Ireland already going well then… on 00:55 - Sep 22 by WicklowBlue | OP in this case Sitters what are you trying to point out or stir up in equal measure? I think another poster framed it well earlier today, in that you keep posting items and then running away from them. I assume you do realise the backdrop behind the ROI v Israel games coming up. The pressure on the ground over here to not play them and the discussions with UEFA along with the FAI grounds to have to play them along with not putting pressure on the players themselves. RTE news: Israel FA hits out at Heimir Hallgrimsson's genocide comments https://www.rte.ie/sport/socce Unfortunately we have not yet found a cure for stupidty, ignorance and hypocrisy across the board. Ireland do not want to play this game full stop and UEFA are effectively forcing us to. What would you do if this was England? Considering already both games are in neutral venues and no tickets being available on the Irish side? |
"What would you do if this was England" presents the prospect of a sheepish Thomas Tuchel saying in a press conference, "I'm maybe not the best person to be asking questions about my thoughts on genocide".

I don;t want to be rude, but I only had time to watch the first min of that, so not sure what point your making. If its that the whole Israeli team served in the IDF, that doesn't mean they all automatically did wrong, or not in my book at least.

I haven’t watched it but I’m simply going by the title which suggests that all Israeli players are IDF soldiers. I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure that Israel has mandatory military service for all young people. So it’s a bit misleading to suggest that they are all active personnel. As I said I’m just going by the title. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

You missed/chose to ignore the bit regarding the various players praising the war effort and doubling down on the bombing. You also ignored the differance in treatment of Russia and Israel by the football authorities. On purely footballing grounds, FIFA have not upheld their own rules. Article 64.2 of the FIFA Statutes dictates that member associations and their clubs may not play on the territory of another member association without that association's approval. https://www.amnesty.org.uk/lat This is a quite comprehensive list of reasons why Israel should be excluded from participation in international sport as agreed after an Irish parliamentary debate. https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/d

I did miss that bit yes, because its a long video! Fair enough now you've made the point in a form I can get with. Did the Arab/ Muslim players in the team agree with those praising the bombing out of interest? I think you're also right about FIFA for the little its worth, but wonder about consistency. Didn't the Irish cricket team recently play Afghanistan? Do we not care about their murderous ways or how the treat women? Likewise Qatar, who I think also played a friendly in the football? Likewise Iran, as GB mentioned earlier in the thread. Or for that matter, the Americans who have started an unending war in the middle East which has already caused many deaths and could end up starving many more next year through reduced access to fertiliser... I gather there were big protests over there when Trump visited, but was there talk of sanctions, with all those American companies operating in Ireland... Basically, why does this only go so far as Isreal?

| Israel v Ireland already going well then… on 21:48 - Sep 21 by BanksterDebtSlave | If national teams don't represent the States they play for you either think the Israeli state isn't genocidal or you think Russia should be competing internationally? Which is it? https://www.theguardian.com/gl 'At the top of the stairs, she pauses for breath, then walks on to the platform that once formed the upper storey of her family’s home. A tent is pitched where the house stood. Beneath her feet are the ruins of the house where she raised her three children, Waseem, 10, Mohannad, 7, and Khawla, 5. And where they died, all three killed by an Israeli airstrike that levelled the home. In about one month*, Alaa will give birth again.' 'I wonder if we could use rat poison, but my brother fears that then the rats will die here in the tent and spread disease. For the baby who’s coming, all I want is a safe place where the rats can’t reach. The baby will be so small, and I am terrified for him. I would like to have a proper crib for him, but cribs are hard to find in Gaza now, and the tent is already overcrowded. What I wish the world outside Gaza understood is how humiliating life in a tent really is. It is difficult, degrading and profoundly inhumane. Death still surrounds us in every direction.' |
Not arguing for or against the dichotomy you posit, nor either of the choices you present. However, as an interesting point, given your reference to national teams representing states, it's fascinating that FIFA has Palestine as a full member, and has done for more than a quarter of a century. The world at large has not yet got that far. FIFA's faults are many and varied, and are particularly apparent right now. But if they can adopt a two state solution, there may yet be some hope for it at large. I appreciate we could not be further from it at present.

You are going down the whaboutary road here. I am not sure Ireland have come up against any country currently participating in genocide other than Israel. I think there has been ample proof of genocide or genocidal intent particularly after the ICJs insipid and deliberately ambiguous ruling. No doubt you will disagree with me on that but 'if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck' ( unless it's an Israeli chicken ). While in principal sport should be above politics I can't ever remember a time when that was the case. Many countries use sport and sports washing to hide or distract from disgusting or dangerous regimes. This needs to be countered by boycotting ( yes we invented it! ) their teams and sporting individuals.

The International Criminal Court did apply for arrest warrants for 3 Hamas leaders but they were all killed. This was the statement issued at the time of the application. "Today I am filing applications for warrants of arrest before Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court in the Situation in the State of Palestine. "On the basis of evidence collected and examined by my Office, I have reasonable grounds to believe that Yahya SINWAR (Head of the Islamic Resistance Movement (“Hamas”) in the Gaza Strip), Mohammed Diab Ibrahim AL-MASRI, more commonly known as DEIF (Commander-in-Chief of the military wing of Hamas, known as the Al-Qassam Brigades), and Ismail HANIYEH (Head of Hamas Political Bureau) bear criminal responsibility for the following war crimes and crimes against humanity committed on the territory of Israel and the State of Palestine (in the Gaza strip) from at least 7 October 2023: Extermination as a crime against humanity, contrary to article 7(1)(b) of the Rome Statute; Murder as a crime against humanity, contrary to article 7(1)(a), and as a war crime, contrary to article 8(2)(c)(i); Taking hostages as a war crime, contrary to article 8(2)(c)(iii); Rape and other acts of sexual violence as crimes against humanity, contrary to article 7(1)(g), and also as war crimes pursuant to article 8(2)(e)(vi) in the context of captivity; Torture as a crime against humanity, contrary to article 7(1)(f), and also as a war crime, contrary to article 8(2)(c)(i), in the context of captivity; Other inhumane acts as a crime against humanity, contrary to article 7(l)(k), in the context of captivity; Cruel treatment as a war crime contrary to article 8(2)(c)(i), in the context of captivity; and Outrages upon personal dignity as a war crime, contrary to article 8(2)(c)(ii), in the context of captivity.

That's the real reason, not the official one. The match should be played. Ireland should let Israel score whenever they get the ball. Ireland should kick the ball into their own net whenever they can. A scoreline of Israel 200: 0 Ireland will send a very strong message to the world that any opposition to Israel is not to be tolerated and labelled antisemitic - because it is. It just is. Don't apply reason to it. Don't complicate things by bringing in thoughts of humanity. Anyone who calls out genocide is really an antisemite. Normal Palestinians aren't really being killed, it's only Hamas, future Hamas members, Hamas wives, Hamas sisters and Hamas daughters, they are ALL guilty, so it's not a genocide. Everybody knows that and it's only nasty antisemites who don't support Israel. I should be banned for this post. Obviously. This thread should be pulled. Obviously. All opposition to Israel should be banned and all evidence of it scrubbed from history. Come on Ireland, do the right thing for Israel and the world, lose 200:0
