Andy Burnham does not rule out Brexit reversal being in next Labour manifesto 13:16 - Sep 22 with 2698 viewsElderGrizzly

He'd win a landslide if so.

All but 4 constituencies polled recently supported rejoining the EU and reversing Brexit

The poll has no data about second options.

I think we should be more concerned about how an average punter like myself can see through such a blatant smoke and mirrors trick from a supposedly reputable newspaper than arguing the toss about second options. I mean look at that bloody map.

Huh? You've literally assumed that all the other options wouldn't want EU membership at all. Surely that is a blatant smoke and mirrors trick, rather than taking a second to think about what has actually been asked

I'm not saying it's a great poll, but i am saying that your assumption is even worse

All the other options (other than "don't know") are literally non-EU membership options. I am confident on the two I assumed (in fact pretty certain the more I've thought about it) as the poll would make no sense otherwise.

I’m with the treq on this one. That poll looks a massive waste of time, clearly designed, as is usually the case with these things, to obtain the data the pollster was seeking.

The way Germany & France are voting will there an EU to re-join. Personally prefer the Canadian Associate membership version.

Most of our issues are due to lack of investment.

If re-joining would boost the economy by 5-10% would you want to do it?

Our GDP increase p.a is in the same ball park as our neighbours, i.e fairly stagnant growth. Do you seriously think our growth is going tosuddenly jump by 5-10%. Really don't think so.

Even if there’s a broad(er) acknowledgment of the absolute shitstorm that was sold into the nation by its charlatan politicians and commentators ten years ago, I’m not sure a Rejoin ticket is necessarily a winner.

Reckon there’s a sizeable cohort that can’t be arsed to go through another dose of that argument and the elevation of c^*+s that inevitably comes with it.

This is my position.

Has brexit been an unmitigated disaster, both socially and financially? Absolutely yes.

But rehashing the whole thing again will tear the country apart, creating even bigger divisions than currently exist.

I'd like to see the government look to create closer ties with Europe, make trading easier, work closely on movement of people etc etc, but a full rejoin will just cause more chaos and animosity in this country.

Can we get bigger divisions? The country it already divided and if the majority of people want to be back in the EU then why shouldn't that be the case? Why should we pander to the minority?

In my view, we need to be fully back in the EU as soon as possible given the way the world is going. I don't see the point in closer ties when we can just re-join and the EU are keen for us to re-join. Having closer ties that enable freedom of movement etc is going to upset the section you've highlighted anyway so might as well just join again. It also might not be possible, there are only certain things that are allowed under EU law and things like access to the single market usually come with the condition of freedom of movement.

If we really wanted to get rid of the chaos and animosity then curbing the falsehoods on social media would be the place to start.

Given the possibility of the Front National in France and the AfD in Germany being in power at the time we might be looking to join perhaps begs the question as to whether we would want to be member of such a club.

As it is, as a birth right Canadian citizen, I am hoping my freedom of movement might be restored by the alliance Canada and the EU are considering.

I believe this in turn would feed through to my two children who need it more than me.

I agree that the poll is fairly pointless. It assumes a rational, informed electorate which dwells as much on politics as those who post on this thread. And those like myself who support returning to the EU,perhaps forget the influence of the largely foreign and expatriate owned media who would certainly influence the conversation if a return was seriously considered.

For me the highlight of the poll is what it revealed about the findings, insofar as they are reliable in a poll that takes data from all constituencies, in the seats held by Reform and Restore, Ashfield, Clacton, Great Yarmouth and Boston and Skegness –[in which] “don’t know” was the most popular answer. Easy answer is EEA membership, full SM access, frictionless trade, and none of the politics.

Would make it more difficult for the likes of Reform to frame it as ‘betrayal’, rather than rejoining without another referendum.

I think Brexit has a lot to do with how divisive, nasty, and unwillingness to compromise that UK political debate seems to be now. Totally agree I wouldn’t want to poor petrol in that refighting old battles.

Some thoughts and responses to what I've read in this thread:

1) Agreed that just because a majority might want to re-join in theory, this does not mean they have the appetite for going through the arguments and negotiations all over again.

2) They are probably responding on the assumption we would re-join on similar, or even better terms to what we had with our previous membership. Highly unlikely.

3) The EEC we voted to be part of and the EU we eventually left were not the same organisation or agreement.

4) There are various mechanisms and options, both formal and informal, to strengthen our ties with Europe, without fully re-joining the club.

It's non-starter. It won't win Burnham any significant new votes. If he (and indeed Badenoch) want to bring former voters back into the fold, there's a long a list of things to focus on first. Just demonstrating basic competency at the every day boring business of government being one of them.

I understand that reluctance. On the other hand we shouldn't fear a barrage of populist crap from the likes of Farage if it gets in the way of improving the prospects of the country.

There could even be a case for the government taking the initiative and doing what's right overall based on concrete evidence. Sod a referendum. They'd probably have to do that off the back of a manifesto promise and a GE, but again we have no say in plenty of government decision that are bad for us that aren't necessarily in manifestos, so why not a decision that would be good for us?
