If it is, even though I entirely disagree with the chap's actions, that is wrong on so many levels. [Post edited 3 Oct 9:28]

He was found guilty of "causing an explosion likely to endanger life" and it has always been handled by the Counter Terrorism Police. Also sentenced to 3 years for 3 counts of possession of a prohibited weapon and had other bomb making materials at home. I don't think there's really a "vanilla" version of planting and detonating bombs in public spaces.

No one died though, and 15 years is what’s often handed out for murder. Yes he was reckless and stupid, but there was no intention to kill by him. I was amazed at the length of his sentence - maybe handed out as a deterrent to others? Am guessing his lawyers have suggested he appeals at the length of the jail term. [Post edited 3 Oct 8:35]

He detonated his device at 18:45 on a busy street - it’s a minor miracle no one was seriously injured or killed. Stating that no one was killed is a pretty low bar to saying that he was harshly treated. The courts are going to be harsh with terrorist acts - they simply have to be. He could well have smashed the camera up with a cricket bat and the Daily Mail would have proclaimed him as a hero. He didn’t, he used an explosive device. He got what he deserved.

15 years for planning, building, planting and detonating a bomb in public in a busy city. Reckless and silly? Just a bit. Didn't intend to kill anyone? He planned, built, planted and detonated a bomb in public, I don't think that's his right to say as a defence. Deterrent to others? Detterent to other people who are planning to build plant and detonate bombs in cities, well you'd hope so, but would it matter as much as long as those bombers 'weren't trying to kill'? 15 years for a bomber sounds about right I'd say.

Quite, and the details around stun guns etc suggest he was into more than just this act alone. We need a tighter grip on domestic terrorism in this country. If only we had the funds and resources in the police force.

Some IRA bombings used to phone in bomb threats. Does that mean they had no intention of killing people? I feel like that's scant consolation for families of Omagh and Warrington bombings who died because the bombers miscommunicated the locations. This guy was extremely lucky. He was just as incompetent as those IRA bombers because members of the public were using that street and there was no precautions taken by him. The report notes he narrowly missed exploding next to a bus and that the shrapnel damage was found 100 yards away.

The ULEZ bomber was dealt with appropriately, reckless drunk drivers tend to be treated far too leniently. Drunk drivers should be given harsher sentences.

Doubt that appeal would get anywhere; the maximum sentence available for this offence is life imprisonment. If anything he got a light sentence. Not sure this guy deserves any sympathy when shrapnel from his bomb damaged cars and homes over 100 yards away including to a kids bedroom. [Post edited 3 Oct 9:29]

I think a lot of people think it's just an extension of the congestion charge zone, when in reality most cars are exempt, unless you have an old banger.

I don't disagree with you on the details; you're right - the chap's actions were textbook terrorism. If I'm reading the article correctly, though, it's the method by which that's been determined that I find problematic. This Guardian article gives a little more commentary: https://www.theguardian.com/gl If the prosecution want defendants to be tried as terrorists, with the increased sentencing and post-release conditions that come with it, it should be put to a jury. It shouldn't be for a judge to determine, once a verdict has been reached. This case would probably have been a slam-dunk, even if the jury had been asked to determine whether it was terrorism. Elbit may have ended differently had it been left in the hands of the jury.

Yes, that's what I wrote and it's clearly in the past tense. When it was launched some posters were crazy on here, it was very strange. If I meant you I would have responded to you. I honestly have no idea why you thought it was about you. Even quoting my post I still have no idea why you think it's about you. To confirm: I wasn't referencing you. SB [Post edited 3 Oct 9:46]

Stokie's post was about the ULEZ scheme itself, not the ULEZ bomber (and from what I recall, a pretty fair description of how it was discussed on here - there were posters from outside London demonising the scheme, although many mainly using it as an excuse to have a pop at the mayor), so I don't understand why you thought he was having a dig at you?

I enjoyed this titbit. I also enjoy the latest thing I've discovered which was that the camera had already been chopped down by someone else! It had already been destroyed. Absolute plonker. "The footage then showed a man wearing a light-coloured top and dark trousers, and carrying a bag, walking out of Shuttle Close and round to Willersley Avenue, where he walked up and down for a few minutes. The ULEZ camera had already been cut down and would have been difficult to see from his initial position, but once Rees crossed the road and located the camera, he lit the fuse and placed the cylinder on the ground next to the junction box." https://www.cps.gov.uk/nationa

It does not appear that the bomber knew how powerful a bomb he was making, it was much too powerful for what was needed, that made it pure luck that nobody was killed or seriously injured. The fact that he did not understand the threat to life due to his actions, for me I think his sentence was lenient if anything.

As far as I’m concerned the drunk driver who killed your neighbour’s son should be in jail until the man he killed is brought back to life and the devastation he caused is reversed. In other words, he is released in a rubber bag. All paid for by him and his family. You never know, do that and the selfish and stupid might learn something about social responsibility. As for the ULEZ bomber, what he did was catastrophically insane. It doesn’t matter about the reasons he could easily have killed any number of people. He can rot in the same cell. It’s really easy to build a bomb. Anyone could do it and the ingredients are all out there, freely available. Controlling it and most of all detonating it is the really tricky bit. Like firearms, this sort of thing is totally off limits and the harshest punishments and deterrents should be applied. Anyone who has seen what the effects of these things actually look like will I suspect agree with me.
