The Green Party of England and Wales is out of step with the rest of the European Greens.

https://europeangreens.eu/news

The EGP has always supported a two-state solution, with self-determination for both Israelis and Palestinians, grounded in recognition of Israel’s and Palestine’s equal right to exist as sovereign states, with the recognition of the State of Palestine as an important step towards achieving this solution.

As part of the European Greens, the Green Party of England and Wales has contributed to forming the position, including the two-state solution, throughout the years.

Yesterday, the Conference of the Green Party of England and Wales voted on a resolution called “Zionism is Racism.” The European Green Party leadership and several of our Member Parties have been in contact with the GPEW leadership beforehand in order to express our deep concern about it.

The resolution “Zionism is Racism” as voted yesterday goes against our agreed positions of the EGP and its Member Parties, therefore as EGP we unequivocally distance ourselves from it.

We condemn in the strongest terms the genocide against Palestinians and the human rights abuses committed by the current Israeli government and have consistently called for EU sanctions against Israel’s government.

Equally, the fight against antisemitism and for human rights is an essential part of our political agenda. At a time when antisemitic incidents and violent attacks are surging, it is of utmost importance to be absolutely unambiguous on this: Jewish people must be able to live free from discrimination and violence.

We have seen that many members of GPEW, including most of the MPs, have publicly spoken against the resolution and its content, shared posts, videos and personal declarations expressing their concerns. At the Conference, less than 1 per cent of the membership voted.

Therefore, as EGP we will immediately demand clarity from the leadership and parliamentary group of GPEW, to understand the official party policy of GPEW, how they position themselves towards the self-determination of Israeli and Jews as well as the protection of Jewish people and members in the party.

Having heard a few interviews and sound bites from the conference and various people defending it or trying to explain it, it’s really clear it’s a mess.

They go from the newly zealous (and a literal Muslim) convert on the one hand, to a sort of cackhanded “jewsplaining” on the other as to what the Israelis and palesstinians should want. All in a very ironic colonial sounding paternal manner.

I just don’t get how this isn’t as big a own goal as Polanski attacking the police on Twitter and doubling down it over Golders Green (I think)

Think Polanski will need to resign before the GPEW can start to recover from this. The latest weighing in against them for the passing of the resolution was John McDonnell MP on Peston last night, & of course Robert Peston himself, very vociferous & passionate in his condemnation over the past 2 days.

Yes, it's sad for many ordinary members.

I looked at the local Green Party website, and all of the news articles in the last few months had some sort of connection to the environment, including things like organised litter pick-ups.

To me this is far worse than that Polanski issue.

That was just one individual being crass or insensitive.

This is a motion passed by the party which will become official policy.

It isn't though making right wing newspaper headlines because they are more interested in bigging up the Tories.

Seems like it.

According to Sky it calls for a single state of Palestine and makes no mention of Israel existing.

Key to this is historical ignorance and, again, definitions. I suspect most of those voting for a Palestinian state to be established 'in the whole of historic Palestine' think that means just Gaza and the West Bank.

However, there has never been a historic Palestinian state. The British Mandated Territory (1920-48) - for a lot of that time loosely linked with Transjordan (now Jordan) - covered the whole region of what is now Israel and the Palestinian Territories. The predominantly Arab areas in 1947 included everywhere except parts of Jerusalem, the northern coastal strip and an area stretching inland towards the Golan Heights (tho the Negev, in the south, is mostly empty apart from Bedouin). After the 1948 war, what Israel hadn't seized was annexed by Jordan and Egypt, it was not independent. Then it was taken and occupied (but not formally annexed) by Israel in 1967.

So what do they mean by Historic Palestine? Is it maximalist (the whole area with no Israeli nation), or minimalist (just Gaza and the West Bank, Israel remaining within its official borders), or somewhere in between? It may have been left deliberately vague to garner as many votes in favour of the motion as possible.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

This from the motion indicates it is the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, ie. the whole of Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, so I think it is difficult to argue that those voting for the motion didn't know this.

"Nor is it discriminatory to support the establishment of a single democratic Palestinian State between the Jordan river and the Mediterranean Sea with equal rights for all."

On the basis of that it sounds like they're proposing a one state, multi-ethnic, multi-faith, fully democratic and just solution which would obviously be a wonderful thing, but there ain't no way that's gonna happen.

People also say there ain't no way a two state solution's gonna happen because Israel will never give up the territory it has already taken and/or continues to steal. Unless it's made to.

What a mess.

I mentioned that glorious potential in another recent thread, and wondered whether the one possible benefit of climate change might be that it forces people to swap their weapons for spades, collaborate and work together in order to survive against a bigger enemy such as scarcity of water, soil degradation etc.

Could just as easily have the opposite effect, ie more fighting over those things, of course!

Which is theoretically what Israel was meant to be. A Jewish homeland, but secular and democratic.

That was somewhat dispelled when their Arab neighbours tried to push them into the sea in 1948, then finally wrecked when Sharon and Netanyahu came to power with ultra-Orthodox settler support (partly fuelled by migration from the former Soviet bloc - over a million people - requiring more land to settle on).

A one state solution runs counter to what the UN wants

The Secretary General said this as recently as 22 September.

"The objective is clear: two independent, sovereign and democratic States, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security within secure and recognized borders – on the basis of pre-1967 lines, with Jerusalem as the capital of both States."

It also runs counter to what President Abbas said by video link on the same day when he asked the UN to back a two state solution.

I feel a bit for the Green MPs. As a group, it seems they largely feel uncomfortable about the motion, but given its now party policy, with no apparent way of quickly reversing that, they're in a right old spot. The credible, principled ones should resign the whip, especially once the wider European green movement has made its final judgement on all this.

Edit: just to add, I truly hope Polanski gets electorally battered on Thurs.

A one state solution leads inevitably to the destruction of Israel.

Palestinian leadership has been very consistent in that message. As have many states who have removed their Jewish population in the region in the last 70 years

The whole issue of land ownership and how it is justified was being stymied before the terrors of the Holocaust and the establishment of Israel. See this revealing and challenging documentary for some details:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1

The moving on of Arab tribes, small communities and occasional nomads who suddenly had more money than they had ever seen in their lives even brought doubts to Joseph Weitz, the proponent of greater Jewish land ownership in what is now Israel. There are parallels to the tragedy of the commons and the subsequent destruction of a pattern of land use that existed for centuries in England. Concepts of nationhood start to lose value and the importance of people working the land are uppermost in my mind.

She sounds like a real charmer. She only joined the Greens in order to further her antisemitic agenda.

Here she is saying “ Zionists" must be "hunted down in the same way as the Nazis".

I posted about the antisemitic entryism of the Green Party at the beginning of the year only to be told that the smear wagon had rolled on from Labour to the Greens because they were becoming popular. It wasn’t the smear wagon that had rolled on. It was the the people who had infected Corbyn’s Labour Party, which ended with an EHRC guilty verdict of discrimination against its Jewish members, moving on to the Greens.

The membership is unrecognisable from that led by people like Caroline Lucas.

Do all Jews want Zionism then? How are you defining Zionism? Is it the same as the definition here https://uk.search.yahoo.com/se ?

Does that mean the genocide of Palestinians because it appears to read that way? Please explain how that definition can be read any other way.

Just to be absolutely clear, in case it needs stating, none of this in any way supports the terrorist actions of Hamas.

This is a superb summary of what Zionism means to most Jews.

For those who don’t like to open twitter/ X threads.

Zionism is both historic and spiritual; the ancient connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel and their right to self-determination in their historic homeland.

I am British by birth, belonging and love; Jewish by inheritance, memory and faith. Britain is my country. Israel is not a competing loyalty, it is the homeland of the Jewish people to which I am bound by ancestry, memory and identity.

For millions of Jews, that is the heart of Zionism. Not supremacy, dispossession or the killing of Palestinians and not a colonial claim to a foreign land but the self-determination of a people with an ancient and continuous connection to it. In practice, it must mean two peoples entitled to self-determination both living in security and freedom with neither people’s future purchased with the lives, rights or humanity of the other.

That is why declaring “Zionism is racism” is not merely wrong, it tells most Jews that their understanding of their own history, identity and collective freedom is itself morally suspect. The Greens should ask themselves whom they are trying to please by adopting a slogan that turns Jewish self-determination into a moral stain. If your politics of inclusion requires millions of Jews to renounce a central part of their history and identity before they qualify for your solidarity, it isn’t inclusion. You are telling Jews: you may belong here but only if you disown Israel as the homeland of the Jewish people. That is not anti-racism. It is imposing a political test on Jews that no genuinely progressive movement would dream of imposing on any other minority.

Antisemites, Jew haters and crashing bores will be put on ignore.

When you consider this...

'Policy is made at the party’s two annual conferences, which generally involve a small proportion of members. The Zionism motion won just over 1,000 votes, approximately 0.4% of the total membership.
Ellie Chowns, a former co-leader, said the party’s governance and policymaking “urgently need to be modernised”.
“As a party we pride ourselves on our democratic member-led policymaking process, but I do think we need to ask ourselves some searching questions when less than 1% of our members actually participate,” Chowns, the Green MP for North Herefordshire, told the Guardian. “This is long overdue and has become even more urgent with the huge expansion of our membership.”

Quite so.

An enforced two state solution with a just redistribution of land and wealth, separated in perpetuity by an international peacekeeping force looks like the only actually practical and vaguely fair solution, doesn't it?

Or would the supposedly civilised world prefer to just let Israel keep getting on with its ethnic cleansing?

Lots of things are true at the same time here:

1. Massive fk up by the leadership of / procedural weakness of the Green Party.

2. The media facing edge of the Green Party seems to have been totally redirected since Polanski's takeover towards the atrocities committed by the powerful Isr**li state on an ongoing basis.

3. Other atrocities have been committed including, sadly, on this date 3 years ago by H*mas.

4. Most of the membership of the Green Party have a primary interest in environmental issues which are, not to beat about the bush, a much more significant problem for humanity. Ignorance of this is true ignorance.

5. Atrocious words sometimes, somehow, seem to create more 'outrage' than atrocious actions.
