Handball handball HANDBALL might be my favourite match in Ipswich Town history.
They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!
Frank Yallop unleashing his second thunderbolt in four days against Man Utd in a main game on MOTD, commentary game on R5, in front of a packed Portman Rd to put us fourth in the Prem in Jan 1993.
And then it went a bit wrong.

When we did eventually win the next match it was a great evening at PR.

Not a football moment , but when SBR brought his Newcastle team to Portman Road and the whole ground sang " there's only one Bobby Robson" - a very emotional moment for me having grown up watching Town in the '70's.
This game was the most nerve wracking off that run in! Tonking Charlton the saturday before, managerless PV in town tuesday, easy 3 points...Broady, i will always love you for this night.

Burns V Huddersfield, we were on our way. Burg' at Cov, a snowglobe of positivity seemed to engulf Suffolk, everywhere I went, smiles. Osborne 1-0 of course, Bobby and the team on the Cornhill. The relief of Amsterdam! Thommo at Southend, US streaming on after Huddersfield, the whole football world was watching.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - the great thing about the Burns goal is you can see it coming from the moment Hutchinson wins the ball. Those 5 or 6 seconds where you know what is going to happen and the anticipation builds... magical.

Nothing will beat Barnsley away for me. Nothing. The league 1 promotion season. Hereās why..
It felt very much full circle. I was somewhat mocked (perhaps rightly) on here 5/6 years prior when about 800 of us in that away end in Barnsley in the McCarthy era celebrated wildly for an equaliser in what was almost a nothing game at that point. It still felt like āscenes. Absolute scenesā to me. Iād donāt something like 16 or the 17 away games before that or something and to me that felt proper. In reality it epitomised that my generation had been starved of proper football moments to be proud of. Weād seen zero success. We were going nowhere and were a boring club to support at the time. A draw at Barnsley was as good as it got.
Fast forward a few years and thereās 6000 of us travelled up midweek to that very same away end knowing a win at Barnsley would pretty much send us up. We were playing a team who were flying and the old Ipswich wouldāve crumbled. We were brilliant. As a team. As a fanbase. Brilliant. The crowd and the team and the management had never felt so together as it was that day. That George Hirst second goal was genuinely āscenes. Absolute scenesā. Iād never seen us have any success until that point. Iād probably done 150+ away games at that point. Itās never been topped before or after. We could win the premier league and to me Barnsley will still be the best moment Iāve had as an Ipswich fan. Iād never felt prouder to be Ipswich.
