| Brazil election - Trump’s team playing out the rehearsal for the mid-terms 06:16 - Oct 26 with 2621 views | ElderGrizzly | Or is it Bolsonaro playing out the greatest hits from Jan 6th? Given Trump’s DoJ moves over the Alaska mid-terms already, I think we have a taste of what Nov 3rd is going to bring in ‘not recognising’ a result. | | | | |
| Brazil election - Trump’s team playing out the rehearsal for the mid-terms on 06:22 - Oct 26 with 1962 views | ElderGrizzly | And of course Trump’s latest statements are utterly disqualifying to hold office in any normal country | | | |
| Brazil election - Trump’s team playing out the rehearsal for the mid-terms on 06:56 - Oct 26 with 1865 views | nrb1985 | I'm less worried about midterm interference as I think Trump can pass it off as "well I wasn't on the ballot" so nothing to do with me. I also think the margin of defeat in the house particularly will be so big it will be hard to "interfere" with. More likely I think he says, look how bad the GOP does when my name isn't on the ballot and therefore I'm running again in 2028... | | | |

Well, they are claiming that their 'outage' affected candidates from across the political system, but it seems to have been very highly targeted at Lula and a few other high profile PT candidates. Similarly the shutdown of public transport by ten Bolsonarista local politicians in places where Lula was likely to pick up votes, and the power cuts/road blockages near PT-sympathetic polling stations. Overall it seems like there was a fairly concerted but last-minute attempt to influence the second round after a much longer term media and social media campaign to get Flavio in at the first attempt failed. What they hadn't counted on was an absolutely extraordinary response from civil society - the second round was won through old fashioned organising and word of mouth. Lula may not be able to govern very effectively (at the same time as the first round, Brazil elected the most right wing parliament in the western hemisphere), but he should be able to at least keep most of the social programmes and Amazon protection in place, as well as Bolsonaro senior in jail. Huge bullet dodged, and we may see the Latin American right suddenly lose a lot of their nebulous behind the scenes support if Trump gets saddled with a Dem congress next week.
| Brazil election - Trump’s team playing out the rehearsal for the mid-terms on 08:32 - Oct 26 with 1615 views | Devereuxxx | It's now such an obvious play from the playbook it's hardly surprising. Only hitch might be that the Supreme Court did extend voting hours from concluding at 5pm to 7pm last minute (although Bolsonaro requested this as well). This seems to be at the heart of his challenge, and we know that institutions in Brazil are not the most bipartisan. Unlikely to work though. But shows the sort of thing that can be used to claim an election as illegitimate. | | | |

He won by 4 million votes. That’s not 2 hours of voting. And as you say, both parties wanted it

These Trump-inspired, right wing, anti-democratic machinations across the world should bring a deep and self-reflective shame to the supporters of and apologists for these right wing politicians. I say 'politicians' but they're not really that are they? They're performing crooks and conmen, taking their herd for a massive bloody ride, and in doing so taking us back to the 1930s. Once the biggest orange pig started using this shamelessly and transparently false playbook, all the other little piggies have hopped on. What a mess they've made of humanity's chances for any kind of future. Jump off the paddle steamer folks, before it gets to the falls, jump to the left hand side and swim to the shore of social and environmental responsibility, and a chance for our children.

I enjoyed the bit where JD Vance turned up in Hungary to rally support for Orban and ended up contributing to Orban's defeat. [Post edited 26 Oct 16:42]

another 52:48 result. seemingly always a simultaneously clear but divisive outcome. as we know, a history of people claiming those sorts of results are illegitimate for all sorts of varied reasons.

Simply the mathematics of a two-party system (or yes/no referendum). 45%+ will be immovably partisan for each side, with a relatively thin, 5-10%, slice of floating voters and turnout variation. That narrow cohort will only rarely all fall one way or the other, thus giving the classic <1% to 5% margin. Just something we aren't used to in Britain, with third and regional parties always taking a decent slice of their own (increasingly so with rising new - or newly popular - parties such as UKIP, Reform, Restore and the Greens) and referenda being still something of a democratic novelty.

Tho Brazil is, similar to the USA, deeply divided along regional-economic faultlines, plus a degree of urban versus rural and US-style evangelical religion versus others. Rich versus poor is not simple, as the ultra-rich (including environmentally destructive mining and logging interests) are backed by a cohort of the poor who are socially conservative, concerned about employment and just generally venerate wealth (same as in many other places, really).

Fortunately, the chances of the Rest of the World voting for a European as SG are pretty slim.

That's a shame, as Liz Truss is now free after the launch of her well-received, balanced, and rational book assessing her time in office. Was given 0 out of 5 stars in the Telegraph today, of all places.

High turnout. The prospect of Bolsonaro winning was enough to combine other factions and get waverers to the polling stations.

I was convinced that Bolsonaro had that after edging the first round, maybe the 2 hour extension helped Lula more than him, who knows - but according to my Brazilian girlfriend, Bolsonaro was the one who requested it. No doubt Bolsonaro (and Trump) will make lots of noise about it being a stolen election, but with Lula's winning margin over 4m votes it's hard to believe that the result would have gone the other way.

Politicians now endlessly claiming that elections that they lose were "not fair" is another blight on modern society & it enables demagogues to prosper.

Trump asked on Alaska yesterday about why it is illegal (it’s not) and his answer was because “it wasn’t fair, it’s illegal” Pathetic
