Dara’s habit of backing off and off and off and off and off.. 17:37 - Oct 31 with 2729 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

..when the striker is bearing down on goal is really starting to grate on me.

That equaliser today reminded me of Charlton at home last year. Absolutely diabolical defending.

Backing off and off and off and off, and throwing his arms around directing folk. Could do with directing himself towards the ball though.

Yes he needs to go for the most dangerous player (in this case the player with the ball) and while doing it try to minimize the angels for a pass. Instead he stays in central position and seems to only try to block the pass into the middle. Wrong decision making.

Possibly a good decision IF there was a free man in the middle. He looks behind, and there is not one...

That is some the most bizarre defending I’ve ever seen. It’s like he completely lost his bearings of where the goal was. Very strange

There actually is a free hull player coming towards the second post, but he needs to go for the ball carrier in that situation as he is a much larger goal threat with a free opportunity to shoot. It is better to go for the player and then it is up to the player to find that pass, which is not for sure.

I’d love to hear his reasoning. Presumably worried about covering the middle. Guess what, Dara, if you don’t challenge the runner, the problem is not in the middle. A baffling and hugely annoying goal.

There is a team mate tracking though. Awful defending.

Some today will blame the referee ….

But the reality is the defending was, as you say, diabolical. No excusing it. Cost us. Keeper was suspect as well.

Florentino (I think) is there and he is covering the one that comes towards the player with the ball, but there is one more behind that is going for the pass towards the second post. Well, this is how i remember it at least.

I am 100% agreeing OShea took the wrong decision, but I am trying to understand his thinking.

I look forward to watching this because I haven't seen it yet but I heard Mathie and Brenner's commentary of it at the time. I would love to be there when O'Shea watches it back for himself and tries to explain what he was thinking.

It is definitely something he needs to put right as you say and really just a basic of defending.

Only defence i have for oshea is maybe he felt be covered off a shot across goal and felt walton would cover the near post

Which brings you to the fact of...where the heck were Diop and Davis?

That's what I found most confusing / infuriating...looked over his shoulder and saw that the player running centrally towards the goal was being tracked, and he can see that Davis has been caught upfield, so he's got to come across and cover.

Even had enough time to get to Iroegbunam while he was outside the box, so force him into a pass /shot from a less dangerous position, and if instead he got done 1v1 after coming across you can hold your hands up, but to do flip all is absolutely baffling...

Well a goal inexplicably chalked off and a blatant pen denied... the referee is surely partly to blame?!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

It's possibly the most bizarre piece of decision making I've ever seen at any level. Would love to know Dara's thoughts

It is very very poor that he didn’t go across.
But also. 1-0 up away from home, we should be protecting the game much better. Leif doesn’t need to be where he is either. We needed to be defensively solid and 1 simple pass has us open and vulnerable with their winger 20 yards in front of our full back with a free run on goal. It’s way too easy. Poor game management

Worthy of stripping him of captaincy today tbh. At least for one game.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen defending like that in my 34 years of watching football.

Unfathomable how he arrived at the conclusion to do as he did in that instance.

This.
The guy’s got real history of it. Charlton and Wrexham just in the last 12 months. I can not believe a professional footballer, for a number of years, would defend like that while a player is bearing down on goal.
A shocker.

Whichever way you cut it, hard to defend and a repeat “offence”.

Has to be repercussions as there’d be any walk of life or profession.

Bitterly disappointing.
