O'Shea getting a lot of heat for Hull's first goal 10:11 - Nov 1 with 1140 viewsGeoffSentence

and rightly so. Leif Davis' role in it has been less examined though. One of the things I love about Davis is his ability and desire to charge up and down that flank from start to end. He showed this impeccably in the Forest game legging it back to clear off the line twice. For that goal though he was unusually languid. The ball was passed into the space behind him, the left back position, and I would have expected him to to go hell for leather to get back for it. But there was no urgency at all. I don't know if he thought O'Shea had it covered, or was attempting to cover another attacker or just thought he couldn't make it. It did seem out of character to me.

I think the issue was that Leif was pushed up marking their winger, and it was their midfielder who then popped up in the LB space. It's a risk with going man to man on the marking.

Leif was never going to get back as he was too far forward.

Hull did a good job of exploiting that space, but we still needed to defend it much better.

I think he could have made it back, at least close enough to put the player and some sort of pressure. Leif can shift. But as it was the player was under no pressure whatsoever.

All I'm seeing today, is blame on individual players, truth is we didn't defend that goal anywhere near well enough as a team, it's collective responsibility.

Honestly, everything in football is collective responsibility, at both ends. It is the purest of team games.

Yeah. It’s not as if it’s a new problem either. Whoever plays LCB makes no difference; teams target the space in behind Leif and between him and our LCB. We should be doing more to counter it as it doesn’t seem as big a problem on our right despite Ouattara also getting forward. I’m not sure hat the answer is: a CM needs to drop into defence maybe to let Dara move over more or a CM has to deal with that space; that’s hard though as teams hit us on the break in that area so it’s not like we have time to get set.

You’d think O’Neil and team are well are of it because all the opposition certainly are.

The problem was that it was not just Leif who had pushed up and gone tight with his man. Diop had followed McBurnie 5 yards into their half, didn't get close and consequently the whole of the left side of our defence had vacated that side of the pitch. Neither made the maximum effort to get back in but unless there was a save, a block, woodwork hit, they were never getting there.
None of the above excuses Dara O'Shea's crazy decision to allow Iroegbunam to run 50 yards without engaging him. That's just unbelievably poor.

And Palacios completely lost his man. It is as CheltenhamBlue said, this was a collectively terrible goal to concede.

The more you watch the highlights, the worse it looks. If O'shea angles his run towards the right-angle area of the box, he would naturally intercept Iroegbunam. Their starting positions were level and O'Shea is running without the ball which helps. He knows McBurnie is out of the picture, he knows he is not covering anybody else. It is inexplicable at this level.

If Palacios doesn't fail to follow his man, O'Shea never gets put in the position where he ends up defending like that. Its not just O'Shea's fault.

There is no getting away from the fact that DOS could have easily intercepted the goalscorer. Absolutely crazy decision making by him

Like so many others on here, I can't understand the thinking. Ouattara is in a good position behind him, so why wouldn't you engage the opposition player? You have to force them to make a decision at least.

Perhaps not but as last man and the player who could see best what was happening he had to get across and didn't even try.

Awful isn’t it. We can analyse u til the cows come home about how the move developed in the first place, but to not close the ball carrier down was utterly bizarre. It’s the weirdest bit of ‘defending’
I’ve seen in a long time at any level, and I watched an under 11s game last weekend lol. What the hell was Dara thinking? He could have easily prevented their player getting a clean sight of goal. The second conceded wasn’t a lot better either. Through the wall bottom corner shouldn’t happen.

I agree with that. We haven't kept a clean sheet as yet. We got goal scorers all over the pitch, just got to be more street wise in this league at the back.

"Through the wall bottom corner shouldn’t happen."

It goes around the wall rather than through it. This one looks mostly down to Walton - didn't get the positioning of the wall quite right and was too focused on covering a shot from Belloumi to his right, which with the wall position was a far lower chance of bring on target / not hitting the wall.

The only plausible explanation is O'shea for whatever reason had his baring wrong of where the goal/he was. He has his flaws but that defending was beyond bad. You don't see that at kids/sunday league level.

Would be interested to see him come out and explain his thought on that goal.
