I have been looking after my Mum all week after a fall, it was pretty grim when I got here but I'll spare the gory details. Anyhow, a moment of much needed levity. I was just in the hardware shop in a local flag hanging zone and was pleased to see how tatty and bedraggled they had become. Mentioned this to the Asian heritage shopkeeper who said that to be fair he had sold them thousands of cable ties and that one of them had fallen from a ladder and broken his leg. He was keen for the flags to be refreshed and has told the chief flag shagger as much. Keep Britain tidy shaggers, take the bedraggled things down ffs.
"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."
I tend to think it would be better for the entire country to take ownership of it. Decorate the streets with flags - Union flags, English, Scottish, Welsh, plus county ones and others representing all the communities and groups which make up our nation, all side-by-side. Turn it from xenophobia into a celebration of belonging.

Might brighten up some areas.
I agree. As a country we should take back control - it's sad that the national flag has been corrupted such that it's now a symbol of the racist minority. Go to The US or France (to name a couple) and flag flying is done with a sense of pride & at scale. Here we've allowed the St. George's flag to be hijacked by xenophobes, not sure if the Union Flag has been to the same degree.
It all started with the combination of the ultra-pc lot saying not to raise flags and racists being the only ones who did...

Bagged myself 2 tickets to their 50th anniversary tour yesterday for the London gig at the Roundhouse. Hopefully preceded by a home win against Crystal Palace!
One of my favourite bands as a teenager, really looking forward to it. The fact that they've been together 50 years makes me feel old though!
All seems a bit pointless to me and makes places look scruffy. Can we just stop fetishising over flags full stop? They make sod all difference to people’s lives.
It’s thousands of poppies everywhere now though instead. Same principle - just a huge waste of resources and money, will end up looking tatty and don’t add anything to Remembrance.

Funds raised through poppies goes to Royal British Legion charities and has a very tangible effect on some lives.
Driving through America and seeing all the homes with the Star Spangled Banner fluttering made me realise how much I wished more would do the same in England. Would bring back some pride to the country.

Been to Netherlands, France, Germany and Belgium this year, only place there tends to be flags is outside of key gvmt buildings. There aren’t national flags hanging here there and everywhere outside of national holidays.

Saw them in Norwich a couple of years ago. Still as good now as they were live back in the day so you’ll not be disappointed 👍
We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub.

Their second album is in the top 10 of my favourite albums.
I saw them at the Gaumont in 1980 and again in 1987 when they reformed, although I sensed a slight slowing of the tempo on the second occasion.
Interestingly, I was working at a summer camp in the US in 1979, when a fellow British counsellor received a tape of their first album not long after it had been released.
The American counsellors couldn't stand it, even though it had its roots in the US in the form of the Ramones. But the Ramones never really flourished in their own country, and I had to make do with listening to AOR music on the radio on a road trip around the US and Canada after the camp.
Anyway, I hope you've aged better than Jake Burns who looks nothing like he used to.

As a country we’ve never really been that big in waving or presenting the flag. Doesn’t mean that as a country were less patriotic than the US - just much more understated.

Much like those who fetishise and police the Poppy to cover their own inadequacies. Misunderstanding the symbol and making it about “you” is about as unpatriotic or praiseworthy as possible.
