-IF- big if it was of the ISIS type then you need to understand they hate all unbelievers. These types are clearly mentally ill and there is no point trying to find logic. For some reason feeble minds have been inspired to commit acts of atrocities.

By asking those questions, aren't you at risk of justifying attacks in London? It's an indoctrinated cult of victimhood (perhaps not the only one at the moment) that is also desperate to promote an over-reaction. IS is losing badly in Syria and Iraq, albeit not without causing more casualties there, so is reacting in the only way left to it.

Where are Al-Qaeda these days? How did ISIS suddenly get the monopoly on 'terrorist' attacks?

Effectively, there's a blanket broacast to all cells and sympathisers to attack wherever they are, as the "caliphate" itself collapses (the Syrian army/militias have just cut off another large chunk of IS territory).

AQ were under the cosh from counter terrorism operations, with the leadership mostly in hiding. Eventually became less and less effective. IS were originally an AQ splinter group, who turned on their former patrons. As they gained status (with success on the ground), former AQ affiliates and "professional" jihadi fighters switched their allegiance. Thus AQ sunk into the background as IS became the "in thing". It's still there, but very weak. Once IS disappear, another lot will almost certainly try to take on the mantle.

Islamic terror has little to do with wars we are or have been engaged in. When will people learn it is the western way of life that they hate and wish to destroy.

It's such a poor media narrative. One group doesn't just disappear, and another one appears. It seems that nobody knows anything about how these groups are organised, and a fashionable name is attached to any sort of attack, when it suits. There's been no evidence of organisation in any of the recent attacks.

It didn't 'just disappear'. There was, effectively, a takeover by a former subsidiary. The present attacks are not centrally organised, in the way AQ's used to be. IS is not that kind of setup. It's part of the reason the methods are highly improvised (vehicles and stabbings). There isn't the infrastructure to supply weapons and explosives, or provide practical training. But they are inspired by IS, whose media outlets have for some time been urging all sympathisers to carry out attacks on anybody within reach. Those carrying them out are self-assumed IS agents. If IS is wiped out, those calls will cease. However, there will still be a pool of adherents to a radical islamist agenda, who will be drawn towards whichever group next gains the ascendency in the struggle to be Top Jihadis (tm).

Haha, yes indeed of course there was an evil man in a turban sitting at the big desk in the cave running that op! Who knows who or what inspires the attacks? It appears that the media has made its mind up though. And its amazing how many people just repeat that narrative.

Goes back to a series of works published in the 1950s by an Egyptian scholar, Sayyid Qutb, who had been to the USA and hated it. He became onr of the most influential figures in what would become modern radical islamism.

It was actually a very elaborate and well-funded staff organisation. Osama bin-Laden was just the figurehead and chief fundraiser. If you've read any of Amaq's press releases, the instructions are there in black and white (well, dark blue). The perpetrators are invariably found to have been reading this stuff too. Pretty clear link.

Not disputing it's more of an organisation than ISIS (not difficult), it was your talk of 'subsidiaries' and 'takeovers' which got me guffawing. In the same way that a bunch of football hooligans who get together now and again to cause havoc at the weekend are not a 'firm'.

As for Finland, they've had a lot of folk head to Syria etc to join Isis, many of which have since returned and I believe they have been expecting attacks for a while. What I wished the media would stop doing is referring to these c**ts as "soldiers" or "fighters". They are neither, they are brain dead, spineless delinquents who should not receive any sort of rights where taken alive or receive any sort of religious burials...the west is a soft touch on these cowards hence so many are plucking up the courage to commit these attacks.

True. I think that the French had/have the right idea - not giving the names of, or any coverage to, the attackers. Where's the appeal in being an unnamed 'hero'? Sadly, I think our journalists would clamber to be the first to name and show pictures of them if we tried to introduce a similar approach in this country. [Post edited 18 Aug 2017 17:03]

Ah, that was the chap I've been trying to remember for some time. Cheers, Guthers! He was at the same university at the same time with one of the major proponents of fundamentalist Christianity in America, IIRC. Name escapes me. Both had the same reaction to what they saw as growing immorality and went off to right those wrongs, with some pretty horrific results.

Thinking about it in business terms is not that far off. It's all about franchises, having the right name and a marketable "product". Notice how otherwise completely unconnected groups in various other places (Sinai, Nigeria, Mali, Libya, the Philippines, etc.) all took on the "Islamic State" brand name - because it's the current "big thing". Islamic State's "core brand" was their self-declared caliphate (actual territory) in Syria and Iraq - something they proved quite good at, for a while. International terrorism was a sideline they only got into once the main business was under threat. They don't have the organisation, networks and experienced operatives in place to be very good at it (yet). Hence they have to make use of kids who they've managed to reach over the internet. AQ spent many years building up their networks before trying anything big. IS don't have that time.
