True, but you can walk from Battery Park to Central Park easily enough. Why not just use trip advisor?

Hotel recommendations please on 11:19 - Sep 15 with 5314 views | TIB | I stayed in the Night hotel just off Times Square last August. Had one of the penthouse suites which gave some good views. The central location was great and we didn't notice too much noise from Times Square. We always use Booking.com for hotels as you get some good deals if you time it right.

Hotel recommendations please on 11:29 - Sep 15 with 5283 views | King_of_Portman_Rd | Have a look on airbnb.. It's always the first place I look now. Usually far better accommodation (generally apartments) in less touristy areas and often discounted rates if you book for more than 2-3 nights. A lot nicer experience than a generic square room & bed scenario that you get with most hotels.

Hotel recommendations please on 11:31 - Sep 15 with 5277 views | Yaffle | We stayed at the Marriott Times Square, great views, and The View revolving bar is great for a drink (free for guests) but I wouldn't eat there again. Hotel is huge and a little soulless but was good value for a family of 4 as rooms are a good size for NYC. As mentioned, I always use Booking.com. The benefit is you don't need to pay until check-in in most cases and once you have secured your room you can keep an eye out for better deals, book the better deal and cancel your original booking. We saved £400 on the same room by doing this.

We've stayed at Tryp Times Square South & Hilton Garden Inn Park Avenue Midtown on our trips, both were fairly new when we stayed in last few years. Both had views of Empire State as well as being close to the Subway, although we ended up walking most of the time, like has been said, can easily walk from Central Park to Battery Park.

Hotel recommendations please on 13:00 - Sep 15 with 5163 views | bluelou | £200 a night is a healthy budget! As someone says you might want to try airbnb or vrbo and get a nice apartment. Anyway, it really does depend if you've been before or not and where you want to stay. If you have been before I'd suggest a nice hotel in Williamsburg for something different; the Wythe is nice. If it's your first time then Manhattan is best; but id go for one downtown rather than midtown cos it's much cooler and less manic (it's still pretty manic) try Soho (the Arlo Soho is alright) or Greenwich/West Village. You're more likely to find a bargain further uptown though. Just don't stay at the Penn. [Post edited 15 Sep 2017 13:04]

Not as healthy as I assumed. New York is pricey it seems

Are you on hotels.com/booking.com? Also it might also make sense to not book a hotel yet. You have plenty of time and sales come along all the time. Try a site like holiday pirates too and keep an eye on the offers, or get a notification set up.

Try booking.com and the arlo soho or soho grand, they aren't bad Also booking.com has crazy deals on the Helmsley park lane hotel right now, 5* overlooking Central Park for < £200 a night. I stayed there the first time I was in New York. It's dated but good location for a first timer https://www.booking.com/hotel/us/helmsley-park-lane.en-gb.html

Hotel recommendations please on 17:16 - Sep 15 with 4977 views | hype313 | Stayed at the Pennsylvania, a right dump but the location was excellent an we weren't there to spend time in bedrooms. You just need somewhere reasonably comfy to put your head down, far better spending the money on other things outside the hotel than inside.
