Occasional reminder that atheism... on 13:28 - Aug 10 with 5414 views | J2BLUE | Technically it is. In reality it's making a judgement based on evidence, or lack of evidence. I don't believe there's an invisible giraffe in my living room. Technically that's faith too.

I think we can safely make that an annual award rather than a daily one. Perhaps even a 'Lifetime Achievement' type thing.

There is no technically about it. It's faith that makes Atheists believe they won't be summoned to judgement before St Peter for their earthly crimes.

If we put the existance of god on trial you'd have to prove god exists.

Occasional reminder that atheism... on 13:38 - Aug 10 with 5352 views | homer_123 | ‘Theism’ means ‘belief in a god or gods’. Believers usually sign up to the values and principles of a godly belief system: it’s an ideology. Theistic ideologies are commonly known as faiths or religions. Many ideologies have the suffix ‘ism’; for example, liberalism, socialism, and communism but, in the case of ‘atheism’, the ‘ism’ ending has merely been inherited from its root: ‘theism’. The prefix ‘a’ turns the meaning around to the negative, that is, ‘not a belief in a god’, so ‘atheism’ is as far from a faith or religion as it’s possible to get.

That is as maybe. There is no knowing the unknowable, the great beyond. Hence Atheism being as much an act of faith as any other belief system.

Let's run this again. The word faith. My 'faith' (in the context you offered in your opener) in the non-existence of god, is based upon known information. The 'faith' of relgious persons is based upon nothing other than fictional stories. Correct? What's the basis for religion outside of fact?

Long as we agree Atheism is an act of faith that's all this post is about. Welcome to Agnosticism my brother, the only sensible solution.

Occasional reminder that atheism... on 13:45 - Aug 10 with 5298 views | Monkey_Blue | The OP is wrong!! Atheism is a lack of belief in a god as there is no evidence for one. Faith means believing in one where there is absolutely no evidence. We can discuss “faith” as in the fact I have faith in science... this is however not the same as religious faith. I have faith in science progressing is because there is a long history of it continuing to do this, so there it’s evidence based trust rather than faith. Why anyone still believes in middle eastern or Asian fairy tales is beyond me

He's alluding to the fact that there is no evidence for the existence of a deity other than a lack of evidence to the contrary. Thus, to be an atheist, you must make a leap of faith that there is no God. Hence why many people who don't believe in God will declare themselves agnostics as opposed to atheists.

I'm smart enough to realise I don't know everything, but if you pen yourself as agnostic, that lack of any faith whatsoever will get you nowhere fast... Can you be an agnostic atheist? Possibly, that's a sensible position in a normal world full of information on which to base a thought process based on common sense and rational thinking surely, but then you've lost faith. Don't sit on the fence, take a leap of faith....you're either a believer or not. [Post edited 10 Aug 2018 13:52]
