In my crude understanding of music and lyrics it means that each syllable of the words hits on a beat or 'bright' point in the melody (although not necessarily every beat or 'bright' point) and in addition that each line of the lyrics is roughly the same length in timing as the bars that go up to make the line of music.

It is a little bit important, for example any group of supporters that chants 'We're the finest football team...the World has ever seen', especially those who have never won any major trophies (League Cups do not count) are going to look a bit daft if they are not supporting the Brazil national team between 1958 and 1970 (with a hiatus to allow special dispensation for England in during the summer of 1966).
But you are going to look even dafter if you get the rhythm wrong or sound tuneless (as much as a chant can sound tuneful) or crunch all the words together.
Although that last defect didn't seem to affect the 'I believe in miracles' opening line of 'You Sexy Thing' when it got to number one. | |
