We need to sign a midfielder on loan 09:55 - Oct 9 with 3855 views | SomethingBlue | It's vital we get someone in who can do the defensive and more physical stuff properly for a few months, even if just as a shoring-up option from the bench. I don't think we can sustain a strong promotion challenge without that, so we need to work out a way to do it. And no I'm not preparing excuses for the manager, just to nip the boring stuff in the bud. Our injuries are at a point where I can't see them not seriously damaging us.

Don't know but we need to wheel, deal and find a way because this is crucial. Yes we have a lot of players but it so happens that the majority of our most important ones are injured, many of them long-term. That midfield position has to be sorted; the better teams will slice through us (as MK did) and turn us over (as MK didn't) as we currently stand.

He can certainly add some welcome physicality and height but as a Downes/Skuse analogue ... not so sure about that.

We no longer have a million CMs — the two options for a key position won't be around til late in the season.

We haven't been playing with a Downes/Skuse player though. Wasn't great at MK Dons but surely a bit early to abandon the next expansive midfield approach? SB | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Didn't say anything about abandoning that approach. Did say something about having the option available to mix it in there. We'll need it, you can be sure.

We need to sign a midfielder on loan on 10:20 - Oct 9 with 3258 views | JakeITFC | Yup, looking at the squad you've probably only got McGavin fit who could play that sitting role (in a defensive manner) and I'm not sure he's ready or combative enough. Absolute emergency scenario would be Woolfenden to shore it up for 10 minutes sitting at the base of the midfield I think, but we really are short of tenacity and tackling in the middle of the park.

It's just crucial. We've seen it at MK and we will play better sides than that. Appreciate it's a relatively short-term need but I'd be happy to get hold of an utterly basic midfield battleaxe just so we can be remotely competitive when we haven't got hold of things — because there will be games where we can't. Might well be the difference between going up and not; I'm really not being melodramatic on this.

We need to sign a midfielder on loan on 10:22 - Oct 9 with 3245 views | IpswichKnight | Don't think we have the budget sadly to buy in a new player unless 2 or 3 go out on loan, we can bring in anyone under the age of 21 though but suspect we will want someone with some experience. It's a valid point and one a few of us have been saying that the current midfield is very lightweight and the better more experienced teams will use that to there advantage.

I wonder if a swap deal could be arranged for Huws? We get a slightly younger but more robust defensive midfielder and they get a more cultured footballer.

We need to sign a midfielder on loan on 10:37 - Oct 9 with 3189 views | itfcjoe | The squad is decimated really in certain areas, CM now being one of them to add to CF. Huws has to step up to be the player he was, or at least close to, or we are well short. Judge will need to put pressure on Bishop as well and McGavin needs to step up But just no bite in there now, and no room in salary cap limits to bring someone in to do so as can only do a youngster which isn’t what we need

I’m imagining Huws is on one of the larger salaries, alongside Judge. They have to perform, now or never. They’ll be the first to go next season unless they put in a shift this season.

We need to sign a midfielder on loan on 10:43 - Oct 9 with 3145 views | Bluefish | Let's go through the numbers again Fit Dozzell (anywhere) Nolan (anywhere preferably middle or top) Bishop (anywhere preferably middle or top) Huws (anywhere) Judge (top of the 3) McGavin (bottom or middle of the 3) Lankester (top of the 3) Injured short term Nydam (anywhere) Injured longer term Skuse (bottom or middle) Downes (anywhere) On loan El Mizouni (middle or top) I'm not convinced that we need more. Especially when compared to strikers or full backs. We need to shift some dead wood *Top middle bottom used to shoe tendencies opposed to exactly fits

I really want Huws to do well here and at his best he can still run a game at this level but, where we are now and considering the salary cap, I'd look to move him out and then get a specialist DM in. We can't really afford to cross our fingers and hope. It's absolutely incredible that we are in this situation yet again. Anyone who says exactly the same stuff happens elsewhere to the same degree is kidding themselves.

Which of those players can perform the specific role of getting us a physical, niggly if necessary, foothold in midfield when we can't get on top of it — because there will be games like that, and it doesn't need to be a reflection on the personnel you list or anyone else.

As a unit there is plenty in there, we seem to be dropping deeper and deeper and allowing ourselves into that sort of game. The swapping of Downes for Bishop automatically takes us into that sort of game. I would agree with you completely in the league above but not in this league for 2 reasons. A) we should be able to outclass teams instead B) the wage cap is not worth wasting on a bit part enforcer......in fact C) Dozzell needs to be trusted and developed not to keep being swapped for a journeyman lump with big forearms ...although I assume dozzell is going to be off anyway

This is a bit of food for you but Lambert has said Nydam unlikely to play first team this season.

I'm not really suggesting swapping Dozzell or anyone else, not from the start. But I'm suggesting having some lump off the bench, at least, to involve if the existing three are struggling. It'll happen sometimes. If Downes had stayed on the pitch at MK I think we may well have won that game, I think we saw a discernible impact in those few minutes. It's not a question of whether we can outplay teams — of course we should be able to do that against most. It's just stuff that any team might need during a game.

I can't see the state of nydam's recovery and it was a horrific injury but that surprises me. He is a natural football (look at how he can play anywhere on the pitch) so I would expect him to bounce back and get upto speed quickly. He is like Dyer in that way from what I've seen
