New C19 variant in South Africa 08:08 - Dec 23 with 1339 viewsStokieBlue

It's not the same variant as in the UK but it has very similar properties, essentially increased viral load allowing it to spread much faster and possibly infect children more easily.

Apparently there are a few more concerns regarding this variant and the vaccines compared to the UK one but testing is underway so that isn't confirmed at the moment.

I expect these different variants being identified in different countries will see a rethink about international travel in the next 6-12 months whilst we all get the vaccines out?

Last thing we want is all these different variants coming across at the same time and putting more pressure on the health services?

I have a horrible feeling this is going to evade the vaccines in the future much like the flu jabs and we are going to be in a very difficult position globally.

It’s all very worrying atm.

I seem to remember someone on the radio saying there have been around 20 slightly different variants of covid19, the scary bit is that most virus's seem to "learn" how to get round the human body defence mechanisms. They adapt to exploit any weakness, and of course take full advantage of the major human weakness that a number people just ignore the basic rules for any number of reasons.

I’ve heard flu vaccines are adjusted each year to catch as many new variants as possible and with no knowledge whatsoever, my instinct tells me the same will happen with C-19.

I think the key moment for me was when JVT said that the breakthrough is that it’s been proved a vaccine can be made. On the vaccine front, I’m optimistic. I’m less optimistic on the ability in this country to roll it out any time soon.

It's more basic than that, they mutate loads of times and the more beneficial the mutation the more likely that variant is to outcompete it's relatives and become the dominant form.

It's Darwinism played out at high speed.

This is certainly the case at the moment but with new technologies such as mRNA there is work underway to create "universal" flu vaccines that work like the C19 vaccine that teach the body to recognise specific parts of the virus which cannot mutate too much or they wouldn't allow the virus to infect (in this case the spike protein).

The vaccine makers are not that concerned, one of them was confident that the vaccine would work and if not would take them around 6 weeks to alter the vaccine to make it work on any new strain as well.

Going forward it will be like the flu shot they will see what strain is hitting the Southern Hemisphere in our summer and create the vaccine for that, undoubtedly they will also get quicker at identifying new strains and creating vaccines in much less than 6 weeks too,

And, apparently UK scientists lead the world in doing whatever it is they do that identifies mutations.

Mainly very rapid mass DNA/RNA analysis of the genetic code of the virus. This data then compiled in ways which allow the development and spread of new variants to be monitored in virtually real time.

There are, I am led to believe, 30,000 pairs in the string, of which only a few (in the region of 20?) materially affect the transmissibility, lethality or vaccine resistance of Covid-19. So they know where to look and what to keep an eye on.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Thick question here, how does it know, are we saying it's a living thing?

Just like any animal, or I suppose Plant, a virus looks to reproduce to survive. Sometimes variants work in our favour with the virus becoming less lethal. Much like virus that lead to common colds or man flu.

I thought I’d read that viruses also like to keep the host alive, as that’s the way the disease is spread. So, whilst they mutate to spread easier they may (stress may) also become weaker so they can also move on.

Not sure how accurate that is!

yet these twots will still grab any chance they get to fly to dubia for a few Instagram pics, and claim they need a holiday. we all do ffs, but some of us are using our brains and not trying to bend the rules for personal short term gain

Of course, the government could close the borders to leisure and business flights. The only transport which should be taking place is trade/freight. But like anything they’re too slow over it.
