Because everything is Churchill's fault. Wait until they find out what the bloke on the other side was like. Seriously though, this is nonsense. Reclaim the Streets had wholesale support. And quite rightly so.

I've no idea as I've ignored current affairs, the news and social media today (I find life much less stressful that way). But i'm going to guess anyway, as it's always the same. I suspect its the 'any excuse for a protest crowd' have turned up.

Yep. There was a bloke with a "Free Assange" banner in and amongst them. Which is ironic, all things considered. Tomorrow the skinheads will be on the streets in the name of "protecting" the statues. Lockdown is officially over. [Post edited 14 Mar 2021 19:45]

Here we go again on 19:45 - Mar 14 with 2493 views | Swansea_Blue | The other thing about all this is I think people are bored sh*tless and just want to do *something*. And also we were getting all bit divided and fractious long before covid turned up. Throw all that together and you've got professional protestors, bored people looking for something to do and angry people looking for a 'cause' to jump on. Churchill seemed like a cantankerous fecker and a bit of a racist too. But he also played a key role in an important part of our history, so surely we can just leave him alone? I'd rather we left statues alone but then explained their history from our current viewpoint. Far more interesting than trying to destroy things you don't agree with (which sounds a bit ISIS to me). Edit - although just to clarify, it seems from eyewitness accounts that there was no raging mob trying to attack Churchill's statue, so he was being left alone in this case. That's true enough. Police are certainly the focus of the chants.

It’s the tweet (and GB) that frames it in this way. The protesters are gathered in Parliament Square because this is a national issue, not some obscure attack on British imperialism, racism and exceptionalism.

The tweets says that "Police protecting the statue of Winston Churchill from protestors". The follow up tweet says "Reports emerging that a commanding police officer told his colleagues to “protect Churchill at all costs” Don't shoot the messenger.

A mate use to be a copper in Nottingham. He would tell appalling stories. Getting cats out of fences in Suffolk would be fine.

A quick scan through Politics For All reveals it to be a news feed for right and centre-right. On a general note, if you and these other status quo fetishists spent more time owning your politics and history in power than smearing those who disagree with it then perhaps the UK wouldn’t be such a fraught, unbalanced and angry place.

A scummy disingenuous tweet. As the source herself goes on to say: Maybe you want to edit your OP rather than again trying to minimise and de-legitimise a valid and important protest? [Post edited 14 Mar 2021 20:29]

With regards to the content, there's protestors in Parliament square which means they end up near the statue, but so what? Is there actually any intelligence they are targeting Churchill? Doubtful. The fact the police care more about a lump of marble than the safety of women is more the story. Hence shouts of "protect women not statues". Although a cynic may suggest this spoonfed take is useful for burying the police's failing yesterday and to distract from authoritarian legislation being passed through parliament though. Passing thought, will the EDL wannabes be out in force tomorrow? Not sure the crowd is dark enough to interest them TBH.

The crowd in the photos are very menacing in their attempts to attack them and the statue too. The one with the bike looks ready to use it as a weapon. It has already been pointed out the GB's source is a right-wing feed with an agenda. Nothing to see here rather than "here we go again".

I don't know, but I can't imagine women protesting about how unsafe they feel to be particularly worried about a statue. Maybe this is just a case of not believing everything you read on Twitter?

To be fair, I’d hope that was just representative of predominantly WPCs on duty/responsible for crowd control. But if it was a photo-op considering the limited threat then 🤢

The only “sexism” the EDL care about is burkas, usually spoke about between ogling Nuts Magazine and shouting OI OI LOVE from vans.
