Had it been possible for the 4.4m who've had Covid in the UK to have been vaccinated with the AZ vaccine a year ago we'd have had
- at least 100,000 fewer deaths from Covid; but
- some deaths from blood clots possibly related to the AZ vaccine. About four deaths.
That's a very clear comparison of the relative dangers of the vaccine and the disease.

Similar to the Us case with the J & J vaccine. 6 cases in 6.8M vaccinations. At that rate if everyone in US was vaccinated with J &J there’d be around 300 deaths, whereas they’ve been seeing around 1000 a day from COVID. | | | |

Well, we've also stopped using it for under 30s due to uncertainties over the blood clot risk. So not so different an approach to those European countries. Australia, Canada, Hong Kong have all scaled down usage too.
If there are doubts it's the right thing to do imo while they investigate further. As encouraging as it is, I don't think the lower rates of clotting than in Covid patients exempts them from having to demonstrating the level of risk. |  |

Could well be. I think this is a massive storm in a teacup myself, but they do need to look into the claims. They'll crunch some data and end up proving the risk is ridiculously low, as we already suspect. But they do need go through that process of looking at any likely correlation and double checking the findings are repeatable, etc. | |

I assume someone with a even fairly basic understanding of the makeup of the different viruses would have a inkling whether they'd be complementary. They must think they are, hence the trial. That article seems to think that a mixed approach may actually offer better protection.
I'm not sure how/why France & Germany have made their decisions though - whether it's based on data or just an understanding of the technologies. | |

Strangely your premise is in conflict with the your final paragraph.
Denmark has made a decision on this particular vaccine use for its own citizens which is perfectly entitled (indeed has an obligation) to do. Bearing in mind that its decision is opposite to the one you think is reasonable, why should it then attempt to force that decision on other countries that have decided to approve it?
Fair enough, criticise the decision to withdraw its use in Denmark on the basis of your final paragraph, but I don't find the decision to allow its export wrong at all. Indeed, for them to destroy those that have been made on the basis they have decided it is unsafe (which would be the logical conclusion of their decision and the suggestion they should not allow its export) would be plain wrong. It is about a balance of risks that they have chosen to fall on one side of. They should not be dictating to other countries that they should fall on the same side. |  |

There appears to be an attack on this particular vaccine and that may well be linked to the fact that more profit will be made from increased use of the alternative vaccines. But let's be clear, this is not especially damaging to the reputation of this multi-national pharma giant that will be making a lot of things people have no clue are associated with them at all. | |

It should be marketed as a win. Some have said the share price has taken a big hit.
I say good for them and I hope the positive publicity will win out overall and maybe even encourage more of this in the future. We need to recognise that our safety from serious illness is greater when we ensure it is properly prevented in developing countries where possible. | |
