Covid is now a disease of the young (plus vaccines work!) 19:57 - Jul 23 with 2137 viewsElderGrizzly

Latest from the ONS:

Data from the Office for National Statistics show that coronavirus in England is now largely an infection among young adults. Cases in 11-to-16-year-olds are nearly four times more common, and in 16-to-24-year-olds nearly six times more common, than in 50-to-69-year-olds.

While generally at low risk from the disease, young people can still develop long Covid and help fuel the epidemic, which drives up cases in those who are more vulnerable.

No evidence to suggest it's more spreadable or causes more severe disease...

Isn't that exactly what they said about the last two variants which were then proven to be much more transmissible?

Sick young people is REALLY scary. The physical reserve is that much higher and the body compensates for much longer against anything seeking to disrupt homeostasis. When it's finally exhausted, it's brown scrubs time.

Also that comment about people not wearing masks is hyperbole too, everywhere I have been this past week, Suffolk, Essex and London, mask wearing adherence has been huge, people are being responsible on trains, in shops, supermarkets.

I would agree with shops, however I was out earlier buying cheese (!) and in the shopping centre section nobody had a mask and then when we stopped and waited for people to board the bus it was full and only one person had a mask on. I was expecting it in this location though.

So all I can say from that is that adherence is probably highly linked to location. I would also say that the majority are continuing with masks which is excellent.

My experience, this past week as if anyone isn't wearing a mask they are likely to be under 30.. It is worth mentioning that 1 in 3 18-30 year old have not had their first vaccination.

There is no vaccine that saves you from being stupid.

Trigger happy scare mongering. Far too much of it around.

To the original post though, I know people in that age group who were made to tough it out at home in wave one, because ICUs were full.

Is this just a case of beds now being available for younger sick people?

Asking without prejudice.

I don’t [intentionally] mean to sound like a dîck when I ask this, as I ask with genuine interest - but surely this is always going to happen and what is the answer? We’ve done strict lockdowns, we’ve down fire-breaks, when/will this ever end?

FWIW, I don’t know the answer and don’t claim to, but surely mutations and variants are now going to happen for the rest of our lives, again, not saying it is now by any means, but genuinely, when is enough enough and we have to find ways to live with it?

One for Badger to answer, but the very reliable Doctors being interviewed today have said you still need to be very sick to get admitted.

As a general rule, you always need to be very sick to be admitted to hospital(bar specific social concerns). But in the current context the 'very sick with covid' numbers are rising. They are not at the catastrophic levels we had in winter. But they are rising.

Between April and two weeks ago, I was asked to see literally no people with COVID(they were around, but they didn't need me). I've had more referrals for COVID(and symptoms suggestive) over th past two weeks than I have in the past couple of months.

'Ways to live with it' involves sensible mitigation until it evolves into a mostly-harmless form, ala flu.

So, that's an aggressive vaccination campaign, proper test, track and trace, support for individuals and businesses needing isolation procedures and legally mandated public masking.

And that's from my first-year nursing student plus 20+ years hard graft at the coal face experience.

I'm sure my specialist infection control colleagues have some ideas more nuanced and clever than that.

Also, it's gone midnight and I'm half-pissed. I'm on nights and I'd like to get fully pissed now please.

As of this point, I'm only taking questions about Penelope Cruz, obscure black and death metal bands and dogs.

Apols, had just seen it & the first 3 posts on this thread incl Badger's as I was on my way outside, seemed pertinent to his comment, so posted it without reading

I agree it's sensationalist & OTT. However, it is relevant in the sense that this new variant has been imported to us via travel (as was the Delta variant that's now running rampant in the UK); we still only have the imperfect traffic-light system for our border controls - and measures have changed recently, including a steep drop off in % of sequencing of positive test results from people entering the UK being carried out - tho the significance of this is disputed by one Prof in this Guardian article -

Think that’s harsh tarring it all on young people. I’ve been out several times and encountered some of the older generation having absolutely no regard for the rules and social distancing. I went to the pub last night and it was more the older generation not wearing masks to go up the bar and in the toilets.

Everyone is in this together and ultimately there are dîckheads from all age groups. I don’t believe pointing it all towards our younger generation fair, however.

You may well be right, but the most common people I see on the tube without a mask (despite the fact TFL still ask you to wear one) by a huge factor is males around 30.

Not all clearly, nowhere near, but they are far and away the most prevalent group. It's not surprising really, we're all invincible until we hit our 30's.

I went to Tesco at Martlesham last night and was pleasantly surprised by the degree of mask wearing. I’d say no noticeable difference since before the rules relaxation. I only saw three people without masks during the hour I was there. One young staff member on a checkout, and two 30 something customers. Glad to see Tesco still providing hand sanitizer and trolley cleaning facilities.

I've heard that Italy and Germany have been vaccinating 12-17 year olds, but that we have a shortage in UK of the approved vaccine for their age-group? (the Pfizer-BioNTech)
