We’ll bowl them out for less than 120 and still lose the match. Is good to see some fight at least. Supporting Ipswich at football and England at cricket sometimes seems like a form of torture!

Or not. The second hour of that session was utterly woeful once again, undoing all the good work we’d done in the first hour.

Pitching it up seems to have the best results on this wicket, so we do that and get some reward. Then we stop doing it and start bowling it in short. Where is the logic in that from our bowlers? If we had any doubt our test side needs a big overhaul then this series has further highlighted changes are needed in going forwards, we are woefully short in all facets of the game. The fact is our coaching and quite a few of our players simply aren’t good enough for this standard of cricket. We seem like we’ve been transported back to England test sides of the late 90s in a blink of an eye! [Post edited 19 Dec 2021 7:32]

I’d say it started a few years ago to be honest.

I suspect he also wanted to give his bowlers some rest and have some batting practice.

Tho, to be fair, we're hardly at 1990's level of problems (yet). We're still quite capable of winning most series - just not in Australia. Mind you, we've won the Ashes out there more recently than they've done the reverse (2019 was a draw).

Not so sure about that, we’ve gone downhill since back to back away series wins in South Africa and Sri Lanka. Nadir was today with Ollie Robinson bowling off spin as we didn’t pick a spinner!

Good teams make their own luck & England are not a good team right now. To have any chance in an away Ashes series, you need a strong team, firing on all cylinders. Good piece in the Times today by Mike Atherton about the quality of cricket played by the two teams. also damning that England have dropped umpteen catches in 2 games & Australia have dropped zero. That isn't just luck.

Well, at least Rommy will be collecting his winnings at 1-2, which I agreed was probably the best bet of the year.

Ashes, you couldn't make it up pt 89,497 ... on 06:01 - Dec 20 with 2117 views | Samuelowen88 | Where do we go from here for the third test? Has to be freshened up somehow. Need a spinner in there, but leach looked poor, but is Bess the answer? Woakes hasn't done a lot with the ball, but can actually bat a bit. Pope hasn't done much, 35,4,5,4 Then the openers, both have been poor but also had one better innings, but who would you bring in???

The options we have are so limited, I’m not really sure?! Too many batsmen simply not producing, our bowling attack looks so similar and is severely lacking in variety. I really feel for Jack Leach, he’s simply not played any cricket for a considerable amount of time with his club or England and is expected to come in and deliver. I’m more inclined to give a few of the England Lions a go. They are also touring Oz, why not blood a few of them? The Ashes are done, we aren’t getting back into this series even if you are one of the more optimistic of fans. So why not blood some fresh, hungry players? We’ve got too many in the current England side that now need to be moved on.

I used to say this a while ago, before Burns at least looked an answer in English conditions: If England's openers keep failing then you may as well play Woakes as an opener, as he is a fairly good, technically correct batsman, and gain a "free" bowler. Alternatively, bring in Bairstow and open with him and Buttler and tell them to play as if it is a 50 over game. Attack: if it comes off then you spread the field and take the initiative. The current openers have not succeeded in denting the Aussie attack by wearing them out through defensive obstinacy, and don't look like they will, so change tack.

I'd argue that's the approach which has led to our current batting woes, because everytime they play an attacking shot they get out, which is fine in ODI/T20 games, 300 all out is a reasonable score in an ODI game, but this is test cricket and the opposition are going to be scoring 400-500 just playing the shots they need to to protect their wicket & wearing the bowlers out. Englands approach today was much better, shame it took basically 8days of game practice to get to it. Just cut the silly mistakes out and bat looooong.
