Burgess will do just fine covering for Edmundson.... on 09:51 - Mar 9 with 1457 views | Garv | I'm close to being more concerned about Edmundson. Morsy is a huge loss don't get me wrong, but Edmundson is a rock, comfortable with both feet and gives us so much forward momentum, much like LW and JD to be fair. I think we can make the midfield work if we can encourage a Bakinson or El Mizouni to be positive with the ball and drive us forward. I'm not sure Burgess will offer half of what Edmundson does, hope I'm wrong.

Or Celina. Thought Bakinson had a decent game. Gave the ball away couple of times but on the whole made some great tackles and always looking to play forwards.

Disagree and think you are doing Burgess a disservice. Highly rated when he came here but just not had the chance yet. Also naturally left footed.

Out of all the players we have in the squad likely to cover best for Morsy being out , it’s El Mizouni. But my question is , where’s he been for the last half dozen weeks anyway?

Quite incredibly (if you go back a few months) Edmundson has been the weakest of our three defenders of late. Of course, 7 clean sheets in 8 means that they have all been excellent, but Donacien has been brilliant and Wolf has been out of this world. Edmundson has done all of the good things they do in terms of positioning, reading the game and so on, but at least five or six times in the last four games he's nearly got caught in possession and allowed them to go clean through, most likely due to being on the left side. At Morecambe he got lucky three times, albeit the pitch was poor and a factor too. He will be a big miss, but if Burgess short passing is reasonable, which it seems to be, then we should be fine given it's his natural side. The big criticism with Burgess early doors was too many long balls to nobody, no longer needed in a McKenna system. But the fact Donacien and Wolf are now on a par or above Edmundson performance wise, when a few months back Fridge was our best defender by miles and those two were various shades of first team 'but could improve there', backup or surplus to requirements is quite remarkable.

Think we've shown whenever Morsy doesn't play we just aren't as effective in the middle of the park, regardless of the combinations tried. Lets be fair, CM has been an area of concern all season. Burgess might not have the same attributes as Edmundson, but for Saturday's game he is a big physical presence which will be very handy against Portsmouth. The timing couldn't really be worse, these next 3 games are probably the biggest games of our season and the outcomes will most certainly shape where we will finish. However, what it does provide is an opportunity for someone else to shine.

I agree with this. He also looked calm on the ball and assured when he came on.

Thought he looked like he fitted straight in when he came on and McKenna has commented several times on how well he has trained with the group

Burgess will do just fine covering for Edmundson.... on 10:46 - Mar 9 with 1232 views | Dyland | Morsy is a loss and a half, for sure. He never gives the ball away, and regains it with ease. But Bakinson also harries, and Carroll oozes class and has looked sharper recently. Both will give the ball away more than Morsy, but add Aluko into the mix plus the undoubted quality of Chappers and Santy, it's still a decent team. Aye, we'll miss the fluidity of those understandings the players have developed with each other, but no need to hang our heads or be anything other than positive still. All to play for, and one game at a time. COYFB

Burgess will do just fine covering for Edmundson.... on 11:12 - Mar 9 with 1178 views | GlasgowBlue | Morsy is irreplaceable. I’m quite happy with Burgess coming in. Edmunson is the better of the two in a pair but Burgess does look very comfortable going wider than Edmunson. That could allow us to look at more attacking options at left wing back.

I’d definitely wouldn’t mind Aluko to take on the Morsy role. It’s not a like for like replacement, but Aluko has shown tenacity winning the ball back. Experienced, uses the ball well and isn’t a lightweight. Prefer him to Carroll in that role. Not sure Celina and Bakinson/Carroll would work. Celina in the front three with Jackson/Chaplin and Aluko in CM.
Burgess will do just fine covering for Edmundson.... on 12:11 - Mar 9 with 1052 views | RobTheMonk | Burgess' best game was when he played left back against Wycombe (?). He's ideally suited to that LCB role. If any of the CB's were to get injured, Edmundson is the easiest to swap out for Burgess without having to shuffle Donacien and Wolf around.
Burgess will do just fine covering for Edmundson.... on 12:25 - Mar 9 with 1020 views | franz_tyson | Question is - if Burgess comes in - who’s the sub CB? Baggott or Alfiin from the 23’s or no sub CB and we re-shuffle with the existing players ?

Fully agree with all that. 'Irreplaceable' is exactly the word for Morsy. I expect if you asked all 24 managers in the league to pick their dream XI from any team in L1, he'd be in most of them. He's a Championship top-10 midfielder. Edmundson is an excellent player but, as mentioned above, Woolf and Donacien have been better in the last few months. I believe in Burgess.

Burgess will do just fine covering for Edmundson.... on 13:20 - Mar 9 with 836 views | Freddies_Ears | Burgess is a different kind of player, a bit more old-school, more likely to hoof it into row z than relentlessly play it out, but I don't see that as a criticism. As a wise man once said, no-one ever scored from row z. Morsy would be a huge loss, but KMac has several days to work up his options. Possibly Carroll, to give a left / right balance. Aluko would be a braver shout, so quite likely! Celina could drop in, like at Morecambe, with Chaplin / Jackson / Aluko the front three. Burns is potentially the worst miss, as there is no obvious replacement, and it is our right side that really shines at present. I trust KMac to get it right. And if we are uncertain about which players and how we'll line up, then Portsmouth will be having exactly the same problem.

Watson reckons he's injured too, so there goes that. Hopefully Morsy makes it.

Burgess can do the basics well good in the air can't carry the ball but a decent replacement. Morsy definitely need him but if one game means he could miss 4 leave him out.
