FA Cup semi final 20:46 - Mar 22 with 1743 views | HARRY10 | Before todays announced of no trains on the line which would be used, it made more sense to play the game nearer to home. Let Palace and Chelsea have Wembley, and Man City/Liverpool play at Old Trafford, which holds 74,000. No long journey/over night stays or petrol costs, which will be way above what they were last time the scousers were there. Its only the semi final

That there’s rail works. And as Burnham and Rotheram rightly say, there’s a pretty good chance at least one side from the North West would get to the semis.

because all Liverpool & Man City fans live in the North West ? move it to Manchester and dont you disenfranchise all those fans who dont live up there too ? and why didnt Burnham and Rotherham write to Network Rail and say oi just shift your engineering works to a different weekend ? if theyve been planning this stuff for 3 years, a weeks delay is neither here or there as clearly the lines are open during the week, so its long term improvements they are making. and so what are these rail works exactly, the line between Euston and Milton Keynes will be blocked, but there is a bus replacement. but fine the WCML isnt the only line in the country, Euston is not the only station in London, you can get a train from Manchester to Chesterfield, and then pick up another train into St Pancras. you can get a train from Manchester to Sheffield and then to St Pancras, Manchester to Leeds then to Kings Cross, even Manchester to Birmingham and then into Marylebone. aim for a Crewe or a Derby or a Peterborough, maybe even a Cardiff/Bristol, there should be plenty of choices of routes around the country by train still working that weekend, yes theyll take longer, but chances are theyll be half the price of a direct Manchester to London ticket anyway. or just travel the night before which I reckon more than 50% of fans attending the game would have done had the WCML been open anyway. and we havent even talked about Megabus.
FA Cup semi final on 12:56 - Mar 23 with 1312 views | Radlett_blue | Idiotic not to play the game at Old Trafford. The FA claim they need the money from having the semi finals at Wembley. OK - negotiate with Man City & Liverpool & get them to agree to make up the shortfall if the game moves to Old Trafford.

Environmental impact too. Surely you can see the sense of 2 teams from the North West playing .....in the North West. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Not the first time 2 northern teams have trecked to Wembley for a semi final. Think the 2 Sheffield clubs were one of the first ones. Environmentally and for the fans, OT would clearly make lots more sense. Were the FA not tied to Wembley for x years for semi-finals as part of the deal done when it was built? Not sure if that tie in remains - if not, then moving the match should be a no brainer. Someone suggested simply switching the dates of the League and Cup game for Man C v Liverpool. That would solve the train issue if Wembley is free that weekend. (Apr 10th)

I know this is Liverpool we are talking about, and to a lesser extent Man City, but a far higher proportion of their fans live in the North West than anywhere else. Network Rail can't just move railworks - it's simply not that easy, they are planned to the nth degree years in advance. And if 50% travel the night before, that doesn't solve anything as the lines into London are shut all of the Easter weekend.

However they won't change it, there will already be thousands of tickets given to sponsors, Club Wembley and other corporates.....

No reason why special trains cannot be re-routed via transpennine routes to a different London terminus.

That's not a bad idea. Obviously they don't know who's going to make the semi, but they could pre-book a southern and northern venue. Spurs and OT. Or OT and Villa Park (which is really not very far from London at all). Spurs' new ground would certainly make for a good spectacle. The Emirates would too come to that.

They literally did it for 100 years. Villa were always away that weekend (as the most likely venue) and with games being played Sat and Sun it ain't hard to fit in at others too. Used to be 2 trips to Wembley a year (League and FA Cup finals) Now it's lost much of it's magic so common is it.

There can’t be more than ten EFL teams who have never played at the ‘new’ Wembley.

Sure, but with cost of living crisis, green agenda etc etc now more than ever screams to do the right thing regardless of stupid deals about games played. Plenty of games at Wembley now its time we got some priorities right about putting people first
