"I think Everton going down could actually end up being good for the club, in the sense of a big overhaul and then revitalise themselves"

The old classic, I said "Yep, that's a great shout, can certainly see the validity of that point...."

On thé other hand it didn’t do much long term harm to Spurs, Chelsea, Man U - or repeatedly West Ham and the now Saudi Arabia on Tyne. All depends on how they respond to the ‘challenge’. Parachute payments are a huge millstone when you’ve got a vast stock of overpaid opportunists on board for the long haul.

Elvin King wrote that in a piece in the Star back in 2002. It was profoundly annoying at the time and hasn't got less so with time. Should be right up there with the Batistuta story and Pickover's Partridgesque.

Norwich in 2009 and Wolves in 2013 are good examples but that's dropping to League One. Harder to justify any recent relegations to the Championship improving things.

Norwich and Wolves stand out because they're rare examples of it actually happening.

Considerably more examples of getting relegated not doing anything for you, long OR short term.

Leicester, 20th in the Premier League after 30 games. W6 D1 L1, survived. Next season won the Premier League.

More of a case for surviving than rebuilding.

And in Norwich's case, if I remember correctly, if they hadn't got rid of Bryan Gunn as manager pretty sharpish into that season, they would likely have "done an Ipswich", as it was not then called, but probably now is...

Sadly the remedy of getting rid of someone out of his depth with Paul Lambert did not work for us...
