An excellent 100 that, stepped the pace up yesterday once Stokes got out and let Foakes grow into the match. It was also really notable yesterday how the crowd made an effort to support him, in case he was still a bit down on losing the captaincy. Our best player of course but even so.

10,000 runs too, that’s some list of batsmen to be on.

Without question the best and most complete England batsman of my lifetime.

No obvious weaknesses, keeps the score ticking along, shots all round the wicket. Brilliant.

It is now.

A really good turnaround from yesterday morning when I turned up; not much optimism around then. Something for England to build on now.

Yep, berserk match really - collapses everywhere, some very fine bowling from both sides, and the final result in doubt pretty much until the final hour.

I hope taking the captaincy burden off Root sees his batting go nuts. The rest of the top order, take note. Pleased Foakes was there at the end too, and good for McC to start with a win.

Lots to work on, but a very good win against a very good team.

I did not know until just now that Ben Foakes was on Town's books. Doesn't say until what age:

Superb and an important knock from Foakes as well as Staokes contribution but once again its taken an innings from Root to dig Engalnd out of trouble. The rest of the batting line up really need to look at their ability to have patience if they want to play test cricket, you can have all the technique in the world but it will do you no good if you keep chasing something wide of off when still buying an innings.

Root is the best test batsman in the world right now and even a half competent top 3 would make a huge difference.

Olly Pope has been given a chance to cement a place ans show England he can be the man at no 3, he needs to show something pretty quickly I feel

Brilliant from Root, showing once again why he’s our premier batsman, but credit to Foakes he’s done a great job staying with him and offering that support to help get us over the line. Hopefully, all this Jos Buttler or Jonny Bairstow as wicketkeeper talk will now quieten down.

Interesting that you talk about patience being a virtue and in the next sentence tell Pope he needs to nail down the number 3 position quickly...

Foakes actually played as a test batsman rather than a swinger.

Incredibly good cricketer, outstanding batsman. Now he doesn’t have the weight of the captaincy on his shoulders, he could become even better.

Two different circumstances though, patience is essential early in a test innings

Patience is not essential if you've played 24 test matches and average 28. England need to find a top order from somewhere so that Root doesn't have to keep coming in at 80 odd for 3. A bit of faith has been shown in promoting Olly up the order and I'd say he needs to grab his chance

Foakes played a brilliant innings, perfect foil for Root. Disciplined innings which was exactly what was needed in that situation, put the bad balls away, rotate the strike and don't waft at anything.

I don't see Buttler or Bairstow playing that kind of discipline, glad he's finally got a decent run in the side and is seizing his chance. I was worried that he was going be mugged off like James Foster did.

I can't see Pope working at 3. He makes all his runs at the Oval which is a complete road https://www.kiaoval.com/matches/kent-cc-12th-may-2022/

He's coming in at 4 so he's not seeing any new ball action from fit and firing bowlers on day one of a match. He's not used to that and he's been exposed big time.

With Crawley the walking wicket nicking off a booming drive he's basically an opener and that's not his game at all. I'd have brought Malan back in at 3, second highest run scorer in the Ashes debacle.

I like Malan, but, as with Bairstow, he keeps wasting his chances; as with Bairstow, he's a much better ODI player than test.

I don't know what the answer is - the Red ball game now bookends the ODI and T20 seasons, meaning that such batsmen as come through are playing on spring/ autumn pitches. It's a massive mess.

Malan is as with much of our batting line up recently a destructive one day player but as with Pope he's has 20 plus tests ans a similar average.

I think Pope gets at least 2 maybe all 3 games to make his case but after that I reckon they'll look at the boy Brooks.

The options for top of the order are dire, Stokes and Root apart no one in that top order really deserves to keep their place which is why I personally would look to those coming through and give them a chance.

Persisting with Pope and Malan is like persisting with Hick or Ramprakash, as much at it should work and we all want it to work it feels like it just isn't going to work but having said all of that, Brook aside who else is making a case

Move Crawley to 3 and bring back the Vicar.

Still believe Crawley and Lees should be given the rest of this series, there’s little doubt Crawley has something about him, but it’s between his ears that’s his problem rather than his technique. Lees was looking very good in that second innings until that misjudgement. There’s a young lad called Ben Compton whose scoring runs for fun at the moment, he could be a name that comes into the frame as the summer goes on.

Joe played a fantastic innings, a fourth innings hundred to win a Test match is a rare feat, especially for England & was the first time Joe had achieved it.

Yep, they'll give Pope the series, for sure...

McC apparently telling Broad last night to 'go out and bash a quick 30-40', apparently. Hmm. Fortunately Root and Foakes stayed in; we have a stupidly long tail now though.

3 batsmen below Broad, who has been an effective 11 ever since he took that ball to the face in 2014 - hence why if the top order fails, we get absolutely skittled.
