So two days of above 35 degrees up coming in the UK 07:40 - Jul 17 with 7060 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | And the media is reporting ambulances might catch fire, LOL! They can’t get enough of hysteria. I was in the UK for 6 weeks last summer and literally didn’t see the Sun. August was god awful. This is going to last 48 hours! Of course climate change needs to be addressed globally but the absolute melt down (exude the pun) is a bit ridiculous. Look out for the people that need it and make sure they are ok in advance goes without saying. Many places deal with this week in week our every summer. It was 41 here for for 4 days in a row in June. BBC’s highest earner extra vocal again, while a lot of people in his circles I’m sure have a bigger carbon footprint than the average UK family. Get the BBQ out and have a beer!

Valid point it will be miserable in that heat with no AC, however in Northern Europe it will cool down plenty at night. However, ambulances catching fire? That’s a new one on me, plenty of cities in the summer operate emergency services in much hotter conditions. The world isn’t ending with 48-72 hours of above average summer temps.

So two days of above 35 degrees up coming in the UK on 08:09 - Jul 17 with 3257 views | Churchman | They love a bit if hysteria. Some years back my dad and I had been to the game and were coming back to Kent, as my parents and sister were staying with us. Coming over the Dartford Bridge, the temperature showed 40 degrees. Ok so we had dinner in our little garden and boy was it hot, but I don’t remember anything bursting into flames. Just the desire for a few cold ones. We are actually lucky in this country that the weather is relatively mild and weather extremes are rare. However, with climate change, it looks like events are going to get less rare, sadly.

You don’t know that yet, as it hadn’t happened, I’m seeing 38 on my app. My parents talk about 76 all the time. It was 15-18 degrees and cloudy for 6 weeks when I was home last summer, so I’m not convinced it’s Armageddon quite yet.

Well IMO it’s just a good example of media hysteria that people should at least be aware of. Also don’t love the private jet crowd bleating on about that we need to collectively do as a society to improve matters. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Fair points in themselves, but I'm getting seriously pissed off with people diverting attention away from the main issue whether that's down to selfishness, vested interests, lack of willingness to learn, or just cowardice. Diplomatic engagement doesn't seem to work.

The hottest temperature was 37.1 degrees in 1990, then 38.5 in 2003, then the current record of 38.7 in 2019. It’s forecast to be 40 degrees in my village on Monday & 39 on Tuesday. This is unprecedented in the UK is all I am saying.

Exactly this. Most of the coverage of the coming weather is sensible, and it really isn't worth getting too upset by obvious clickbait on this, or indeed any other topic. It's easy enough to ignore it.

Its not just about the temperature this week either is it? Our winters in the UK get milder and shorter every year (with occasional cold snaps), and (in Suffolk anyway) we seem to get longer and longer dry periods over the Spring and Summer - currently my lawn is so dry even the weeds are dying. These are clearly noticeable trends. Plus, you know, the vast majority of the scientific community telling us that this is happening. I appreciate that JJJJJJJJ's post was less about denial of climate change and more about hysterical reporting, but the problem is that those that do want to deny always pick up on the wrong reporting and base their case on it.

The global fight for action on climate change is on a knife edge right now, we seemed to be making progress but now I’m very fearful those with vested interests in halting these measures are gaining ground and more influence with our politicians. Far too many are far too Trump like when it comes to climate change, that’s extremely dangerous.

I’ve bought a new BBQ Although - it’s now showing as likely to be 33 in Ipswich Climate change awareness is one thing but being frightened about your health for two days because it’s forecast to be hot is another. If you are worried or don’t do well in the heat then stay inside and drink lots of water.

38.7 in Cambridge in 2019. It fairly frequently gets over 40 in northern and central Europe (continental climate rather than a coastal one). My point is that while these temperatures are excessive - and increasing - it's incremental rather than a sudden leap. The famous summer of 1975 topped out at "only" about 35 degrees.

Not wanting to be pedantic Guthers but wasn’t it 1976 We had just moved out of London to a god awful village and I just assumed Suffolk was hotter.

It was always going to be a tough ask to avoid the overall tipping point into runaway climate change and societal and environmental collapses, given inherent human short term self-interest seems to trump even the future well-being of our own children. The progress was mostly false promises wasn't it? We've very probably killed ourselves and we're still pretending not to see it. As the science and the direct evidence get clearer and clearer, the denial gets thicker and thicker to compensate and maintain the delusion, whether that delusion is willing or otherwise.

The actually quite large scale of the increments and the frequency at which they are coming mean that when you look at the thing over a more meaningful timescale, say a decade rather than year by year, you certainly could classify the additive result as a sudden leap against a 'normal' context. The sort of sudden leaps Canada for example has seen in the last year are terrifying and it would be very strange if what we are seeing here is not part of the same world pattern. I realise you're views are probably not contradictory to most of that, but I think we probably should be seeing this as a sudden leap (in the context of not just one year) because of the ramifications that has for a number of positive feedback cycles and resultant tipping points.

So two days of above 35 degrees up coming in the UK on 09:27 - Jul 17 with 2711 views | DanTheMan | "Many places deal with this week in week our every summer." Places that are normally hot deal with heat by having aircon or designing houses and other structures that way. Places that for hundreds of years haven't dealt with these temperatures are probably not best suited to deal with this heat. Potentially getting 41c in London. That's insane temperatures. EDIT: Where is this article / mention about ambulances catching fire? I cannot find it anywhere. [Post edited 17 Jul 2022 9:31]
